The launch of the 2015 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby has taken place, with 2014 winner Laughil Blake taking centre stage, as details of the 2015 edition of the race were announced.
The Irish Greyhound Derby has been running since 1928, receiving Classic status in 1932, with current big race sponsors BoyleSports coming on board in 2014, to partner one of the longest running races on the Irish Greyhound racing calendar.
This will be BoyleSports second year sponsoring the race after signing up in 2014, continuing a successful relationship with Shelbourne Park over a number of years, that has witnessed the company support the Champion Stakes and the Race of Champions in Tralee.
This year’s event will carry a massive prize fund of €240,000, and will take place in Shelbourne Park, Dublin on Saturday September 19th. The winner will pocket €125,000 and the Irish Derby trophy, with the runner up receiving €22,500, third €12,500, while the three unplaced finishers will each receive €7,500.
There will be eighteen qualifying Trials taking place nationwide, sixteen in the Republic of Ireland, and two in Northern Ireland. The first round heats will kick off on Thursday August 13th and Saturday August 15th, followed by second round heats on August 20th and August 22nd. The third round heats will take place on August 29th, with the quarter-final and semi-final stages happening on September 5th and September 12th respectively.
The 2015 Irish Greyhound Derby Final will take place on September 19th, and will be broadcast live on RTE Television from 8.00pm on the evening of the race.
Speaking at the launch, Phil Meaney, Chairman of the IGB said,
“The continued support of BoyleSports for our blue riband event is a marvellous vote of confidence in the sport of greyhound racing. We are looking forward to another thrilling competition culminating in what can only be described as the best night on the racing calendar – Saturday September 19th in Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium – The Final of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby.”
