Shane Lowry’s Hilarious Tiger Story: Lowry details his funny story as Tiger makes a disastrous ten on the thirteenth at Augusta.
The Masters is one of golf’s four majors and one of the most-watched sporting events in the World. Held in Augusta National, it’s perhaps one of the most challenging and prestigious courses in golf. As a result, it is no surprise that the more experienced players with the course fair far better than the rookies.
For Ireland’s Shane Lowry, this major was a chance to finish strongly in a disappointing year for the Open Champion. Lowry has struggled for form since winning the Open last summer.
The Open in 2019 had been held in Ireland at Royal Portrush. That was the first time the Open had come to Ireland in over sixty-eight years. The Irishman thrived from the home support and won in what was arguably one of Irelands best sporting moments.
Lowry led for most of the tournament, winning by six shots over England’s Tommy Fleetwood. However, since this miraculous win, Lowry has had an extremely quiet year.
Pandemic aside, his stats are poor for his standard. Most of his stats on Tour for Lowry is outside the top thirty on average, with some outside the top hundred. His best stat of the year was his sand save percentage, which he ranked seventh at sixty-one percent.
Dream Come True
Lowry believed that this year’s Master’s could be a chance to turn his poor form around. What better way for the Offaly man to do it when being tied to play with childhood hero Tiger Woods.
What better way to get concentration levels back to your best when playing with the best. Both defending champion Wood’s and Lowry were drawn with each other for the first two rounds.
By the final day of play, both golfers sat at five-under-par. As a result, once again were both playing with each other in the final round.
Midway through the last round, viewers were shocked as Tiger tried to make his move up the leader board. The two golfers had reached the section of the course dubbed “Amen Corner”.
This is a notoriously difficult three-hole stretch of holes eleven to thirteen that can destroy a round if played poorly.
Tiger stood up onto the thirteenth tee and what happened next was an utter meltdown. The defending champ destroyed any chance of a run for the lead when making a ten on the par-three.
Lowry stood on the tee stunned as he watched Tiger hit the ball in the water three times repeatedly. He stated:
“I couldn’t believe what was happening,” Lowry told Paddy Power’s From The Horse’s Mouth podcast.
“People think it’s 150 yards and that should be easy, but that’s the most brutal hole in golf. The wind swirls down there, the green is soft and spinny. It’s a huge sigh of relief to just get on the green, and then to stand and watch him do that was unbelievable.
Bo Being Bo
Hilarity ensued when Bo Martin, Lowry’s caddy suggested joking with Tiger after making his ten.
“Anytime he hit a bad drive he’d say to his caddy, ‘Ah there was like one of yours Joey’.
“We were stood on the 13th tee and my caddy Bo Martin said to me, I wonder what he’d say if I said to him, ‘I bet you wished Joey had hit that one’. But I couldn’t say that to him. I bottled it!
Lowry went on to finish in tied twenty-fifth position on four under par, his best major finish of the year. Lowry’s slump in form has been highlighted by his world ranking as he’s slipped from nineteenth to thirty second.
However, with the Master’s rolling around fast next April, the Irishman could have his eyes on the jacket.
“I’d love to win another major, I’d love to win a Masters, I’d love to be the first Irishman to wear a green jacket. Something like that would be unbelievable.”
The eventual winner of this year’s tournament was current world number one Dustin Johnson. Johnson was red hot favourite coming in on day one with many criticising if he’d ever win another major. The American pulled off a cool, measured performance winning by five shots with Im and Smith finishing tied second.
