Ballymac Matt may be a leading contender for the StarsportsUK English Derby which reaches the third round stage at Towcester on Saturday night but he has also recently achieved the status of being a winning dad!
The amazing near veteran tracker has a small number of litters on the ground and he has had three winners in the past number of weeks.
His first winners were across the water with Ballymac Bauble and Ballymac Fusspot winning races at Hall Green and then on Friday night he had his first Irish winner when Bracula, a litter brother to the UK winning bitches, was a winner at Tralee.
All three are members of the December ’15 litter by Ballymac Matt out of Moyar Kite and Bracula is owned by Javier Jarne. Moyar Kite is actually a litter sister of the great Sparta Maestro.
Liam said, “He is a nice dog and we ran him early as Javier was anxious to have a runner. I have a few more very nice saplings by him, so it is very encouraging”.
Don’t expect Ballymac Matt to retire to permanent stud duties in the near future. He could well set a record that might never be equalled.
He is currently contesting his sixth Derby and is performing to a very high level. But he is also likely to be in the Boylesports Irish Derby line-up and that would make it a magnificent seven Derbys for the dog.
For the record, he won the 2015 Boylesports Irish Derby. Then last year he reached the finals of the Scottish and Irish Derbys and reached the third round of the English classic. He finished third in the first round of the 2015 English Derby (only two qualified) and he is now in the third round of this year’s classic.
It is an amazing record and Dowling reports the dog to be in “great form. He is able to beat anything I have in my kennel and hopefully he will get another run or two at Towcester”.
