Geraint Thomas is still favourite with all bookmakers to win the 2019 Tour De France despite losing time on the race leader Julian Alaphilippe
Alaphilippe finished the 27km time trial in a time of 35 minutes flat, beating second-placed Geraint Thomas by 14 seconds to extend his lead in yellow to 86 seconds.
Thomas is still 4/7 with most betting sites Alaphilippe is 9/2 Egan Barnell is at 8/1 and its 25/1 bar the three.
There is still an expectation that Alaphilippe will soon fall away from the top of the general leaderboard, but he survived Thursday’s first Pyrenean stage without losing much time and has now given himself a cushion timewise before Saturday’s summit finish on the Tourmalet.
“I knew that I really could do a good performance on this Parcours. I just gave everything, especially in the first part was really good for me. I went full gas and I see what I can go to the line. In the end, my sport director said I was first, 10 seconds or whatever. I gave everything I have and I won the stage.” said Alaphilippe
After the stage finished Thomas said “I felt like I say, it was controlled, but in the last 8km or so I just felt like when I really wanted to step on it I didn’t have that last 5 per cent. It was still a decent ride but still, take it apart a bit.
“I didn’t really expect [Alaphilippe to win the stage]. He’s obviously going incredibly well, and he’s certainly a favourite to watch now. For sure [he’s a threat for overall] the way he’s riding. If he can keep that up, then he’ll win, for sure. But it’s a long way to go, and there are a lot of stages to come.”
It would be obvious to suggest to back Thomas, but we think the value might be in backed Egan Barnell at 8/1, considering Thomas was unable to win the time trial he may not be 100% and at the prices, Barnell has to be some value. He will ride the mountain stages perfectly and will catch up plenty of time.
