USA’s Ryder Cup Current Automatic Pick’s: A look at the current players set to be automatic picks for next years Ryder Cup in 2021.
With the Ryder Cup on home soil this year now postponed, the USA will be bitterly disappointed. The Ryder Cup, which was going to be held in September in Whistling Straits, has now been postponed to 2021.
This has been due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic sweeping the World since March. Everyone agreed that the Ryder Cup wouldn’t be the same without fans. The fans ideally made the entire atmosphere and riled the players up.
This, unfortunately, would not be the same behind closed doors. The USA’s team selection differs from its European counterparts. The Americans have the top six from the PGA tour in the automatic spots accompanied with four wildcards.
This year, the USA team captained by Steve Striker will be gutted the event has been moved, given his player’s form. The Americans dominated all the majors of 2020. Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, and Dustin Johnson all in the major winners’ circle.
However, Steve Stricker will be scratching his head when pocking his team with all the superstars at his disposal.
Let’s take a look at all the USA players currently in automatic places for next year’s Ryder Cup.
1.Dustin Johnson (15041.79)
Topping the list at number one on the automatic points list is Dustin Johnson. The American has currently amassed 15041.79 points and is 6000.00 points ahead of second place.
Johnson has played in four Ryder Cups from 2010 to present. His record overall stands at seven wins, nine draws, and zero loses.
This comes to a point’s total of 11 and a half points earned for the USA. Johnson has had one of his best seasons to date in 2020. This has come with two top twenties, three top ten’s, four top five’s and three wins.
His two tour wins coming at the Travellers Championship and the Northern Trust. The thirty-six-year-old then retook his world number one spot back along with being crowned Masters champion.
Johnson’s best results in this year’s majors saw him place second at the PGA and win the Master’s at Augusta National. Dustin boasts some impressive stats on the PGA Tour for the 2020 season.
He ranked ninth in strokes gained from the tee, eleventh in tee to green, and fourteenth in scoring total. This was accompanied with being first in eagles and tenth in longest average drives of three hundred and eleven yards.
As World number one and having won a major Johnson will no doubt be on the team come 2021.
2. Bryson DeChambeau (9870.76)
Second on the list for automatic qualifiers for the USA Team is Bryson DeChambeau. The twenty-seven-year-old has currently earned 9870.76 points this season with Justin Thomas lurking closely behind him in third.
Bryson is nicknamed “the scientist” for his mechanical swing and excessive analysing for perfection. DeChambeau is known for his controversial approach to the game. The young American has put on over forty pounds of muscle to simply outdrive all golf courses.
This has since yielded mixed results but overall has had more success than failure. DeChambeau has made one appearance in the Ryder Cup previously back in 2018. His record to date for the US team is no wins, three halves and zero defeats.
He played in three matches and earned his team one and a half points. DeChambeau with his new approach to the game has had a good 2020 season. The big hitter has had two wins, four top fives, and four top tens.
In the majors, Bryson has played well with the best finishes coming tied fourth in the PGA Championship and winning the US Open. 2020 has seen him reclaim his top 10 in the world ranking status, having slipped to fourteenth last year.
The Americans stats for the PGA Tour season make for some great reading from Stricker’s view. DeChambeau ranks first in driving distance with an average of three hundred and twenty-two yards. Fourth in birdie average with four, seventh in scoring average with sixty-nine and fourth in sand saves.
He also sits at first for strokes gained from tee to green. Having won a major this year and being in the top ten in the World Bryson should be a shoe-in for 2021.
3.Justin Thomas (8015.53)
Ranking at number three on the automatic points list is Justin Thomas on 8015.53 points. Thomas made his rookie Ryder Cup appearance back in 2018 in the USA’s defeat to Europe.
The twenty-seven-year-old played most of America’s matches, winning four and halving one. His points total contributed stands at four and a half points. Thomas’s performances during the 2020 season more than warrant a second appearance in next years Ryder Cup.
The young American had two wins, five top five’s, four top ten’s, and two top twenties. The two wins coming at the St Jude Invitational and the Santry Tournament of Champions. His great run saw him reach number one in the World for one week before a slump in form hit.
However, Thomas regained his consistent form and has been steady as the world number three for some time now. The twenty-seven-year-old has led the field when it comes to some of this season’s stats.
Thomas’s best stats included ranking at second for birdie average with 4.5 and third in scoring average with 69. This accompanied with ranking in first for strokes gained on approach to the green and tee to green.
Given Thomas’s form and World ranking he should comfortably make the team come 2021.
4 Brooks Koepka (7670.40)
Fourth on the list of automatic qualifying players for the USA is Brooks Koepka, with 7670.40 points this season. The four-time major champion has played in two Ryder Cups from 2016 to present day.
His record stands at four wins, three draws, and one loss for a total of four and a half points. Koepka has struggled for form this season and has been hot and cold. This is mostly down to a hip and knee injury that then plagued him for most of the season.
The big hitters’ best result of the 2020 season has been a tied second-place finish at the St Jude Invitational. His season record consists of four top tens and one top twenty finish. Koepka’s best major of the year was the master’s, where he finished in a tie for seventh position.
On the PGA Tour this season, the thirty-year-olds best stat was his driving distance. In which he ranked twenty-fifth on tour with an average drive of three hundred and seven yards.
The American will be disappointed that he is outside the top fifty on every other stat on tour. Despite his injury ruling him out for most of the season, Brooks will be eager to improve.
His stats suggest a different player than one that has won four majors in just three years. In 2021 he will look to add another major to his impressive career and hold onto his automatic place.
Even if Koepka were to slip out of the automatic slots, Stricker would likely pick him. This is due to his major winning abilities and raw talent under pressure.
5. Collin Morikawa (7171.79)
Sitting in fifth place on the automatic points list is young gun Collin Morikawa on 7171.79 points. Nicknamed the “Can’t-Miss Kid” he has seen a rapid rise in the golfing World this year.
Morikawa started the 2020 season in fifty-fifth in the world rankings and now finds himself in fifth. If the young American can maintain his good form going into next season, he should make his Ryder Cup debut.
The 2020 season has been twenty-three-year olds best to date. In events thus far, he has had two wins, four top tens, and three top twenties. His two victories coming at the Workday Charity Open and then the PGA Championship.
Morikawa was the surprise winner at the PGA beating Casey and Johnson by two shots at Harding Park. As a result of his first major win some are beginning to label the young man reminiscent of a young Tiger Woods.
However, it’s simply too early in his career to make such speculations. Morikawa’s best stats of the 2020 season were ranking in fifth in eagles, and second in approaches to the green. This was accompanied by ranking fifth in strokes gained from tee to green.
For Stricker, Morikawa will need to have a good 2021 season to have any hopes of making the team. Having a major under his belt will definitely help his cause to be in the conversation.
However, he could get left behind with all the superstars the US has if he has a poor year.
6 Xander Schauffele (7087.52)
Last on the list of automatic places on the list is the young Xander Schauffele with 7087.52 points. Schauffele, like Justin Thomas, is just some of the talented crop of players all emerging at the same time.
The Americans have an unlimited tap of experienced and young talented players for their team. The twenty-seven-year-old is no exception. Schauffele should have arguably made the 2018 Ryder Cup team, having had a fantastic year but was then unfairly snubbed.
Now in the automatic places, he will look to cling onto his place for as long as he can. For the 2020 season, Schauffele has arguably been America’s most consistent player.
Apart from one event in which he finished in tied sixty-fourth, his worst event in twenty is tied twenty-fifth. This shows his incredible level of consistency. He began the season in ninth in the World and has had a year of steady performances to crawl to eighth.
On the PGA Tour, Schauffele has had one win, four top five’s, two top ten’s, and five top twenties. His one win coming in the lucrative and prestigious Tour Championship towards the end of the season.
This win earned the twenty-seven-year-old fifteen million dollars and an eleventh-place spot finish in the FedEx. Schauffele’s best major finish of the year was fifth-place finish at the US Open.
The young Americans strongest stat of the year is ranking tenth in greens in regulation with a massive seventy percent. He has hit eight hundred and ninety-three greens out of a total one thousand two hundred and sixty.
His other stats include ranking tenth in birdie average with four and fifth in scoring average with sixty-nine. With how consistent Schauffele is on tour its hard to see him getting snubbed for 2021.
