Gordon Elliott outlines plans for Don Cossack to defend Cheltenham Gold Cup

Co. Meath based trainer, Gordon Elliott, intends to give 2016 Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Don Cossack, just one race before he defends his title next year –  as long as the reigning champion shows sufficient progress from injury.

The nine year old is on the road to recovery from a tendon problem, but the Gold Cup winning trainer reiterated that the six-times Grade One victor would be retired if it looks as though he might not reach the heights to which he has grown accustomed.

“He scanned OK a few weeks ago. I think he could be back within a month, then he’ll start on roadwork” said Elliott.

He cautioned, however, that retirement will beckon if the horse’s return to full health doesn’t go to plan: “It’ll be day by day. If he stays OK, he’ll be back and if he doesn’t, he’ll have a happy retirement.
