The Aidan O’Brien-trained The Cliffsofmoher was third in the Stellla Artois Caulfield Cup in Australia this morning as the Pat Cosgrave-ridden Best Solution won the Group 1 contest ahead of the former Ballydoyle-trained Homesman.
The five-year-old winner, trained by Saeed bin Suroor for Godolphin, previously won two Group 1 races in Germany, before the decision was taken to race him in the southern hemisphere.
Homesman, who Aidan O’Brien previously trained for the Coolmore partners, was a short head behind in second, with The Cliffsofmoher third, ahead of Duretto, trained in England by Andrew Balding.
Best Solution’s Irish-born jockey Pat Cosgrave, who won the Ladbrokes Stakes in Australia last weekend for Godolphin, was handed an 11-meeting suspension by the Stewards for careless riding, and opted to immediately begin the ban to ensure he will be available for the Melbourne Cup next month.
Best Solution is now likely to head to the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November where he will probably meet many of the same opposition, and possibly the Herbert Power Stakes winner of last weekend, Yucatan, the current favourite for Australia’s most famous race.
