A small, but very select field, of just four runners, boasting a total of 15 Grade 1 wins between them, will bid for the £150,000 Grade 1 Betfair Tingle Creek Chase (3.00pm) at Sandown Park on Saturday.
Nicky Henderson’s Altior will start the race as a red-hot favourite for the two-mile contest, with the eight-year-old unbeaten in nine starts over fences, five of those successes coming at the top level.
Ireland’s only representative in the race will be the Willie Mullins-trained Un De Sceaux, winner of the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase in 2016 when defeating Sire De Grugy.
Second-season chaser Sceau Royal from the Alan King yard won four of his five outings over fences last season, including an impressive 11-length victory in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase.
Completing the line-up is another second-season chaser, Saint Calvados, trained by Harry Whittington. The five-year-old was successful in three of his four chase outings in the 2017-18 campaign and returned to action with an impressive success in the Grade 3 Poplar Square Chase at Naas on 10th November.
