Watch the emotional video tribute made for Pat Smullen when receiving the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award Of Merit.
Born in Rhode, County Offaly, on May 22, 1977, Smullen was one of four sons. He initially was far more interested in football than horses. His eldest brother Sean worked for trainer Joanna Morgan.
He went on to become one of the outstanding jockeys of his generation and a nine-time champion in Ireland, Pat received devastating news in 2018 when diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
A man of outstanding resilience, he has thrown all his efforts into helping others who face the same condition.
His outstanding fund-raising efforts have resulted in over €2.5 million being raised for Cancer Trials Ireland and culminated at the Curragh in September with the Pat Smullen Champions Race For Cancer Trials Ireland.
The race saw stars from the past including Sir A P McCoy, Kieran Fallon and Ruby Walsh return to the saddle. The race was watched by a massive crowd in the Curragh.
