Willie Mullins wins his 9th OLBG Mares’ Hurdle

Willie Mullins won his 9th OLBG Mares’ Hurdle in just nine runnings of the race when the Ruby Walsh-ridden Benie Des Dieux (9/2) fought back up the home straight to hold off Midnight Tour and race favourite Apple’s Jade (1/2f) in the 2m 3f contest.

As Jack Kennedy’s mount, Apple’s Jade, began to fade at the final flight of hurdles and La Bague Au Roi blundered, Ruby Walsh produced Benie Des Dieux to take full advantage and battled up the hill to win by half a length from Midnight Tour (33/1) with a further length back to the odds-on favourite in third, and Indian Stream (66/1) claiming fourth place.

Ruby Walsh, who returned from injury in time for the start of the Cheltenham Festival, was completing a big race double on the day for his trainer Willie Mullins following the success of Footpad in the Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase earlier in the afternoon.
