Former Grand National winner won’t make cut

The 2014 Grand National Champion Pineau De Re is set to miss the cut for Saturday’s race as he needs five withdrawals to make the 40 running field.

Speaking to the Guardian, trainer Dr Richard Newland said it was disappointing given that the horse is at a rating similar to that before he won the race two years ago and at 13, his last chance to claim victory.

“It’s very disappointing and all the more frustrating because he is in fantastic shape. But everyone else has paid their £5,000 to stay in the entries to this point, so I would think they want to run and we’re not going to get many dropping out.”

“The idea that a rating of 143 doesn’t get you a run is incredible. I don’t think anyone expected this and the thing needs thinking about. If you look at those horses rated above him, how many have ratings based on races short of three miles? I’m sure there will be changes for next year.”
