Leinster A defend their British & Irish Cup title

Leinster A made light work of Leeds Carnegie to successfully defend their British & Irish Cup title last night in Donnybrook.

Luke McGrath, Sam Coughlan-Murray and Darragh Fanning were among the try scorers in the 44-17 win, while Cathal Marsh produced pinpoint accuracy from his penalty kicking and conversions all night.

Leinster A were up by 13-0 after only fifteen minutes, as they exerted their dominance early. The likes of Fanning, Noel Reid and Leo Auva’a had all played for the Leinster senior team various times in the past, and their class and experience showed. With these kind of players in the starting fifteen, it was difficult for Leeds to get going.

Jonny Bentley kicked the English side’s first points after twenty-four minutes, but a Luke McGrath try minutes later stopped any potential comeback that may have been on the cards. The second half begun in much the same fashion, with Leinster’s dominance in the middle of the park and athleticism on the wings giving Leeds fits.

Coulan-Murray went over three minutes into the second half to make it 25-3, and in reality it was game over from that moment. The constant kicking threat of Marsh from all angles meant there really was no let up, and Leinster were good value for their win.

In doing so, the team regained the trophy they won last year when they defeated the Newcastle Falcons 18-17 in thrilling fashion.
