Connacht and Ireland lock Mike McCarthy’s man of the match performance against South Africa has earned him a place on Rugby Planet’s starting XV team of the week.

The highly-respected rugby magazine named McCarthy in the second-row and is the only the only Irish member to make the team that lost 12-16 to the Springboks.

One of the first names on head coach Eric Elwood’s team sheet, ‘Macca’ has become a key player for Connacht since he signed in 2008 and his outstanding performances for Connacht in recent seasons has rightfully earned him a call-up to the Irish set-up.

Rugby Planet described McCarthy as:”Strong in the tackle, excellent in the line-outs and made some timely defensive interventions too – McCarthy’s bullish display that saw him front up to South Africa’s pack was enough to earn him a man of the match award after 70 minutes played.”

With Paul O’Connell now out out of Ireland’s last two tests, McCarthy could well find himself a key component in Declan Kidney’s plans going forward.

Rugby Planet’s full XV team of the week:

(15-9) Alex Goode (England) – Gonzalo Camacho (Argentina) – Ben Smith (New Zealand) – Tamati Ellison (New Zealand) – Robert Lilomaiava (Samoa) – Dan Carter (New Zealand) – Ruan Pienaar (South Africa)

(1-8) Wyatt Crockett (New Zealand) – Adriaan Strauss (South Africa) – Nicolas Mas (France) – Luke Romano (New Zealand) – Mike McCarthy (Ireland) – Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe (Argentina) – David Denton (Scotland) – Louis Picamoles (France)
