Ireland and New Zealand head the betting to progress to the quarter-finals with both sides having easier routes than many. Ireland will have to play Japan, Scotland, Samoa, and Russia in their pool. The most difficult game for Ireland is obviously going to be Scotland, they will be expected to win the other games with considerable ease which would guarantee them a quarter-final.
New Zealand are in Pool B and are 1/200 to make it to the quarter-finals. They have a tough game with South Africa, but they face Namibia, Canada, and Italy in the other three groups games where they will be expected to win easily. South Africa are also 1/100 again the tough game for the Springboks will be against New Zealand, but they will be able to get over Namibia, Canada, and Italy easy enough. Six Nations Champions Wales are 1/50 to progress to the quarter-final stages. They are in a group with Australia, Georgia, Fiji, and Uruguay. The tough game for Warren Gatland’s men will obviously be against the Aussies, they will be expected to rack up big scores in the other three group games. Australia are 1/33 to progress to the last eight, again the difficult game will be against the Welsh.
Eddie Jones’ England are 1/14 to make it to the quarter-final stages, they face two big games against France and Argentina, before playing the USA and Tonga. Scotland are 1/5 to progress from Pool A which contains Ireland, Samoa, Russia and hosts Japan. They will be expected to win at least three of those games. From here the betting tightens up France are 8/15 to come of Pool C, they will face difficult games against Argentina and England however. Argentina are even money to progress out of the same pool.
Japan are 11/4 to make it out of their pool, they will face difficult games against Scotland and Ireland but will no fear either team. Fiji are 9/1 to progress out of Pool D which contains Wales and Australia. Georgia are 16/1 to make it out of the same group to make the quarter-finals. Italy are 22/1 to make it out of pool containing New Zealand and South Africa. The odds get larger from here with Samoa 40/1 to progress out of Pool A (Ireland’s group), Tonga are 80/1 to make it to the quarter-finals out of Pool C, USA are 150/1 to make it to the quarter-finals out of Pool C, Russia are 500/1 to make it to the quarter-finals out of Pool A, Uruguay are 500/1 to make it out of Pool D, Namibia are 500/1 to make it out of Pool B and Canada are 500/1 to make it out of Pool B.
A value bet is probably Argentina at even money, their game with the French will be crucial.
