Not content with watching this year’s Rugby World Cup from the comfort of your sofa? Don’t fret, because you could win a luxury five-star trip to Tokyo to attend the final in person all thanks to Paddy Power.
This competition could see you not only win two tickets to the final at the International Stadium in Yokohama, but five nights accommodation in a five star hotel, a day-long guided tour of Mount Fuji and a Japanese Cultural Experience.
If that wasn’t enough Paddy Power, who have recently taken a very favourable no wagering approach to new-customer bonuses, are also throwing in £1,000 spending money and a free £1,000 bet on the Rugby World Cup Final, the question is however, will Ireland be there?
Could Ireland win the Rugby World Cup?
After a turbulent couple of months that saw a humbling defeat at the hands of England and back-to-back wins against the Welsh, Joe Schmidt’s Ireland team head into the Japan Rugby World Cup top of the world rankings.
As promising as that might seem, Ireland aren’t the tournament favourites this year. Unsurprisingly New Zealand are hotly tipped to win the competition, shortly followed by South Africa and Eddie Jones’ England.
If Ireland are to have any hope of making the Rugby World Cup Final then they’re going to need to rely on their experienced squad to step up to the mark. Having lost talismanic Leinster flanker Dan Leavy to injury earlier in the year, there remains that niggling worry in the back of everyone’s mind that one or two untimely injuries could completely derail the Irish campaign.
However, on a positive note, Ireland have been blessed with an incredibly kind pool for the opening matches of the World Cup. With games against Scotland, Japan, Russia and Samoa, it is expected that Ireland will comfortably finish top.
That said, Ireland will certainly have to play at their best if their to overcome opponents in the next round, as they’re expected to face either New Zealand or South Africa, presuming all three teams make it out of their respective groups.
If Ireland were to make it past the quarter finals and beyond, they’d certainly have to treat every single game as if it were the final as there are some formidable foes to watch out for. They could come up against Australia, Wales, England or France, all teams capable of making the final and potentially winning the tournament themselves.
Which players are pivotal in Ireland’s World Cup campaign?
Naturally, the nation will look towards talismanic Johnny Sexton to put points on the board for the Irish, however, we’re keen on seeing how Kiwi-born Bundee Aki, CJ Stander and stand-in flanker Josh van der Flier all perform in Japan.
Most eyes will of course be on Rory Best. Having had his captaincy called into question this year, he’ll no doubt be more motivated than anyone in the 31-man squad to put in a string of top class performances whilst leading his country.
At the ripe age of 37, he’ll be well aware that this is his last chance at helping Ireland etch their name onto the Webb Ellis Cup for the first time in their history.
