Premier League: Chelsea v Tottenham Preview, betting, and probable starting teams with both teams looking to mount a title charge.
Chelsea Team News
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea welcome Tottenham Hotspur this weekend to Stamford Bridge. The game is huge for both clubs as a slip up from Liverpool against Brighton could see either team go top.
It is a huge positive for football and sport in England that crowds will be allowed back in. From December second those that can facilitate the social distancing in stadiums will be allowed up to four thousand spectators.
However, it remains a pity that for this game of such magnitude that it will be played in silence. Since the beginning of the season talk was emerging of how Chelsea have spent so much yet did so little. With over two hundred plus million spent they were leaking in too many goals against much weaker opposition.
Change Of Fortunes
Since the arrival of Thiago Silva and new goalkeeper Mendy, Chelsea look transformed at the back. Since the two players arrival, Chelsea have gone the last eight games unbeaten with six clean sheets. At the other end of the pitch Hakim Ziyech has been the last piece of the puzzle Lampard desperately needed.
His attacking force of Havartz and Werner seemed to struggle to find their feet with moments of brilliance but no consistency. However, Ziyech has been the man on fire for Chelsea giving them the service they need to make everything click. In the five Premier League games he’s played a part in he’s gotten a goal and three assists.
Ziyech has been a creative driving force for Chelsea as they look now to challenge for top spot. Chelsea currently sit in a tie for third place with Leicester City on eighteen points. The blues have won five, drawn three and lost just one from a total of nine games so far. A win against Tottenham could put them top or at worst second place if Liverpool are to beat Brighton.
Chelsea can count themselves lucky going into the Spurs clash with minimal injuries. Their only injurie concern is with winger Pulisic, whom is a minor doubt with a hamstring problem. With the impending havoc the coronavirus has caused for the league and schedule players are playing far more games.
Some players are playing two games a week and sometimes even three if they are on international duty. As a result, substitutes have been increased from three to five to help cope with fatigue and resulting injuries. In recent games, Lampard has been experimenting with multiple different formations to get the best from his players.
However, when facing Tottenham, I feel they will go with their 4-3-3 which appearances to be their most settled shape.
Tottenham Team News
Jose Mourinho will be going into this game with his Spurs side to prove people wrong. Critics had said that regardless of the new signings made including super star Bale that top four was the best Spurs could do.
This criticism coming from Tottenham’s shaky start to the season in which they couldn’t hold onto a lead. This coming from losing one nil to Everton and drawing three all with West Ham having been three nil up.
However, with all this said nobody would have predicted Mourinho’s side to be in the conversation about a league title this season. Although they possess the players to mount such a challenge, they just lack consistent performances.
However, this view of Tottenham has now shifted for multiple reason but mostly after some big performances against top sides. A two nil victory and a clean sheet against European giants Manchester City stunned football fans just before the break. That game was a true defensive test for Tottenham and to see if their summer window had paid off.
This view on Spurs has changed in the last month with the strike force of Kane and Son making headlines. The pair have become the second deadliest duo in Premier League history combining for 29 goals.
They remain just 7 goals from record holders Drogba and Lampard. The arrival of the new signings such as Hojbjerg, Bale, Doherty,Hart,Roden,Vinicous and Reguilon have vastly improved their options.
This adds much needed depth to Tottenham’s squad which simply wasn’t there if key players were injured. One such position that needed depth desperately was up front in place of Harry Kane.
No substitute striker in place of the talisman could really chip in and help the squad. That is until now, Vinicous has been in great form scoring two goals in his last five matches. He possesses great potential and talent to step in for Kane when needed although it’s still early days.
Spurs have been in excellent form since their early league slip ups going unbeaten in their last eight games. They sit joint top of the table with Liverpool on twenty points in poll position. Spurs have six wins, two draws and just one defeat from nine games. A victory is needed to keep the pace against the former champions that are likely to win against Brighton.
Jose Mourinho like Lampard is lucky that he doesn’t have many injuries to contend with. Midfielder Erik Lamela is the only Spurs player that won’t be available at the weekend due to a calf injury.
Matt Doherty has returned to the squad this week following his coronavirus scare whilst with Ireland. He started the Europa League game midweek against Ludogorets and played the full ninety minutes.
The Irishman should be a contender to start the game if fully fit. Tottenham will likely line out in a 4-2-3-1 shape.
A consistent formation for Mourinho’s men which is defensively solid. They will be looking to build on their defensive performances lately and keep the unbeaten run going.
Predicted Result – Chelsea 2- 1Tottenham
I predict a really good, exciting game with lots of chances. Both teams are in brilliant form in both attack and defence. I feel with the stakes of the game and for sake of moral the opening with be cautious.
Both sets of players will look to keep it solid at the back and not give away silly mistakes. Upon the second half at nil nil I expect Chelsea to go for the kill. Tottenham will be happy to sit back and let Chelsea have the ball.
Spurs 4-2-3-1 shape will be well suited to sitting deep and intercepting passes in the middle of the pitch. Chelsea will dominate the ball with the best chances coming from striker Werner and the creative Ziyech.
Ziyech is the exact type of player that can play eye of a needle passes and break through deep sitting teams. Tottenham will need to stop him at all costs in midfield if they are to keep a clean sheet. Spurs on the other hand will look to break out on the counter. The raw pace of Bale and Son will be more than enough to break away from Chelsea’s players.
I feel their best chance is to come from a Kane goal on the break away. It’s difficult to call but I feel Chelsea will emerge victorious.
On paper their front three to equal to Spurs but they are simply in better form. My prediction on the day is a two one win for the blues come Sunday.
