.Troy Parrott looks set to make his Ireland next month after Mick McCarthy confirmed he is contention to play.
Parrott starred in the Tottenham 9-2 win over Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA U19 League on Tuesday night. RTE Sport report that the former Wolves and Ipswich boss has been at several matches over the past week. It is likely he intends to unearth something different to try and get the win over Denmark which would book Ireland’s place in Euro 2020.
McCarthy speaking to the FAI website said when asked about Troy Parrott, “We have monitored Troy’s form and progress all season and New Zealand could be the ideal chance to have a look at him at senior international level. McCarthy referenced the friendly against Bulgaria when the team was changed around. The Barnsley man stated “We changed things around for the Bulgaria game in September and we saw the benefit of that with the performances of the players who came into the team and did well”.
He said that Parrott could be just one player to benefit, “Troy could be one of the ones to benefit. He scored four goals on Tuesday which will have done him the world of good and he has served his suspension now after the red card in the Under-21 game against Italy so he will be an option for New Zealand and for this squad.” Ryan Manning is another player reported to be in contention with a place in the squad, “He is playing well in a very competitive QPR team who are well up there in the Championship.”I know Ryan started his career as a central midfielder but he played both as a left-back and as a left-sided wing back against Reading on Tuesday and he did well.”
Opinion on Parrott and Manning
In fairness Ireland will certainly need to bring something different to this game. They played very poorly in Georgia and managed to scrape a 0-0 draw in the end. That was a game that should of been won though. They then suffered a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in Geneva. If I am brutally honest the side offered nothing going forward, the midfield was non-existent. Parrott and Manning if in form should be in the starting 11 never mind call ups.
