Jose Mourinho got life underway as Spurs boss in the Premier League with a 3-2 win over West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday.
Mourinho was appointed earlier this week as Spurs boss which we reported following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino. Lucas Moura and Son Heung Min both scored in the first half. Spurs led 2-0 at the break. Harry Kane netted a third after the break which actually proved the winner. Antonio and Ogbonna netted goals for the Hammers but Spurs held on.Pressure will now more likely rise on West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini with his side losing their 6th game from the last 8.
Kane thought he had Spurs in for a goal inside the first 10 minutes but it was deemed offside. Son and Moura should have scored minutes later. The pressure eventually told though on the 36th minute. Alli again turning provider to Son who cut in from the left and fired to the net past Roberto. The scoreline got better for Spurs just before the break as once again Alli sent Son free. The South Korean’s cross found Moura who finished. It was 2-0 at the break.
The game was all but over just after the break. Moura had missed a chance previous to Harry Kane’s 49 minute finish. Serge Aurier found Kane who finished with a well taken header. It was the England strikers 21st goal of the season in total. Spurs took their foot off the gas somewhat and West Ham saw this as an opportunity. Michael Antonio slotted home after the initial pass from Noble. Declan Rice had a goal ruled out through VAR after adjudged the former Ireland international was offside. Ogbonna got West Ham’s second goal of the game. However, it was to little to late as Mourinho claimed his first win as Spurs boss.
Obviously there are bigger games ahead for Mourinho at Spurs but there were signs on Saturday that he can bring something new to the table regarding the team. Spurs will now look to get back into the top 4 in the Premier League.
