Premier League: West Brom v Tottenham Preview, betting, and probable starting teams with Tottenham looking to put pressure on the top 2.
West Brom Team News
The Baggies welcome Tottenham to the Hawthorns this weekend in which will be a crucial game for both sides. Slavin Bilic has had tough start on his return to the Premier League with a new side.
The Croatian took over West Brom in 2019 and guided them straight back to the top flight. Bilic had previously managed in the Premiership with West Ham for a number of years.
However, upon their return to the top flight they haven’t invested very much this summer and its beginning to show.
The club has been one of the leagues lower spenders with just under 35 million spent. Players such as Grant, Diangana, Pereira,Kipre and Robinson were bought from a variety of divisions within the English league. The Baggies currently sit in 17th place on just 3 points. A win here could dramatically boost moral propelling them out of the bottom three.
If results go a different way at the weekend, they could find themselves 5 points from safety. West Brom enter a trio of important fixtures as they face Tottenham, Manchester United followed by a resilient Sheffield.
Slavin Bilic also has some injury concerns coming into this weekend with some key players missing. Veteran striker Haal Robson Kanu, midfielder Sam Field, and right back Dara O’Shea are all out injured.
The baggies main problem however has been finding the net. Thus far in the league they have only scored six goals, the third lowest in the division. They lack real poise in the attacking third with strikers at the club remaining an issue.
Veteran striker Robson Kanu is out injured, Robinson has scored 2 goals but has had limited game time. A possible starter is experienced Premier League player Charlie Austin, a star player in their promotion push last season.
However, in the seven league games Austin has been left out of the squad and has yet to feature. Rumours suggest that Cardiff City are interested in signing the striker in the January transfer window.
With games coming thick and fast they will need to do some smart business in January to turn things around. West Brom will likely line out a 4-1-4-1 formation that they have stuck to most frequently this season.
Tottenham Team News
Jose Mourinho’s Spurs are in a good run of form as they are unbeaten in their last six league games. They are currently placed at third in the league on 14 points just two points off first spot.
A win against West Brom at the weekend could place them in top position if results go their way. With the impressive signings made this summer Tottenham have be tipped as title contenders this year.
This especially after some clubs are drastically underperforming such as Manchester City and Man United. Players brought in such as Hojbjerg, Reguilon, Hart, Doherty,Vinicous and Gareth Bale have reenergised the squad.
A huge change to the Spurs team this season is how much the squad depth has grown. In previous seasons if any of Tottenham’s starting players were injured they never had the depth to replace them.
This years transfers has changed this run of fortune. The new players of real quality will prevent the team from losing form mid season as has happened frequently. The one area perhaps not quite addressed was the centre back position.
Joe Roden from Swansea was bought last minute who has real quality but has yet to start a league game. Eric Dier has dropped from midfield to defence to fill in but Jose has had players constantly rotate around.
As a result of this chopping and changing of defences, Spurs have had some worryingly weak moments. Incidents such as the game against arguably a weaker Everton side, losing one nil at home.
Similarly, against West Ham in which Spurs were three nil up and drew three all. These sloppy errors are something Mourinho will need to iron out if his squad wish to be title contenders.
Record Breaking Forwards
Thankfully at the other end of the pitch Spurs are on fire as the partnership of Kane and Son make headlines. The pair have recently become the second deadliest duo in Premier League history combining for 29 goals.
They remain just 7 goals from record holders Drogba and Lampard. Tottenham are currently the league’s top scorers with 18 goals from just seven games.
Injuries in defence have began to mount for Spurs with such a hectic schedule of League and European football. Player’s ruled out such as Reguilon, Tanganga, Lamella, and Aurier will no doubt cause headaches to Mourinho.
Tottenham will most likely line out in 4-2-3-1 formation that Jose seems keen to stick with since his arrival. So far it has yielded great results and has been able to utilise their best players.
Predicted Result – West Brom 0-4 Tottenham
I predict a comfortable Spurs win. Tottenham if lined out in their 4-2-3-1 formation will be both solid in defence and quick on the counter. With the run that Jose’s men are on at the moment I cant see them being beaten.
I would expect chances galore from Kane and Son given their current record breaking form. Tottenham will dominate possession and pen the baggies back in their own half.
The best chances of the game will mostly come from a Harry Kane strike or Son bursting in behind. West Brom will be sorely missing their home crowd to make the visit difficult for Spurs.
The lack of goals and issues with strikers is a real problem at the moment. Slavin Bilic is still chasing his first win of the season in the league. When the Baggies are under the cosh I see their best chances coming from Pereira and Robinson.
Midfielder Pereira has a wide range of passing and trickery. His passing ability would enable him to get West Brom out of their own half and get up the pitch. Robinson has magnificent pace, he will look to get in behind the defence and gallop forward at every chance.
He has already proven he can score against the big sides having put two past Chelsea. Given Tottenham’s goalscoring form and their strong squad depth I see the task being too much for the baggies.
