The nominees for the 2019 FIFA Puskas Award have been revealed – with ten stunning efforts in line to be named this year’s best goal in world football. Named after former Hungary and Real Madrid star, Ferenc Puskas, the award recognises excellent efforts from all around the world, with some obscure names having bagged the honour in past.
There are some familiar faces in line for the award, with Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimović among the contenders – as well as Northern Ireland’s Billie Simpson, who bagged a stunner for Cliftonville Ladies. Andros Townsend’s wonderful strike in Crystal Palace’s win against Manchester City also makes the shortlist.
Here’s all the goals – and all you need to know about them:
Lionel Messi – Barcelona v Real Betis
A masterful Messi at the peak of his powers, there is simply no better sight in football. This delicate chip over a hapless keeper completed a stunning hat-trick for the Argentine, as Barca cantered to the La Liga title.
Zlatan Ibrahimović – LA Galaxy v Toronto
500 career goals brought up with a karate kick into the far corner from a floated ball over the top. It was vintage Zlatan – who proved he is aging like fine wine in the MLS, an effort the like of which he is now synonymous with.
Andros Townsend – Crystal Palace v Manchester City
With the ball cleared into his path, the winger unleashed a ferocious drive from 35 yards which almost took the net off – the goal proving all the more stunning as the Eagles held out for a shock win over the reigning Premier League champions.
Billie Simpson – Cliftonville Ladies v Sion Swifts Ladies
A clearance from the opposing keeper, Simpson smacked it right back first time from the halfway line – with the cleanest of connections, and the ball promptly flew into the roof of the net. As clean a hit as you’ll ever witness.
Daniel Zsori – Debrecen v Ferencvaros
This goal from Romania is an amazing effort, Debrecen’s Daniel Zsori pulling off an exquisite overhead kick into the far corner – in stoppage time to grab three points, the goal dreams are made of.
Matheus Cunha – RB Leipzig v Bayer Leverkusen
Closing down the defence via the high press before spinning his marker and chipping a hapless goalkeeper in the blink of an eye – this is nothing short of wizardry.
Ajara Nchout – Cameroon Ladies v New Zealand Ladies
What better stage to score a screamer than the World Cup. Nchout broke away from the All Blacks defence, making a mockery of her marker before clinically dispatching into the corner. Pure class.
Fabio Quagliarella – Sampdoria v Napoli
The technique of this goal cannot be understated. The vision of the Italian to meet the ball with such precision and finish emphatically with his back to goal is nothing short of world-class, which is perhaps why he finished top scorer in Serie A last term at the ripe old age of 36. Betting in Italy is still big business and it almost as popular in Italy as it is in the UK. Betway are one of the most popular bookies and lot’s of customers are signing up to them using a Betway promo code . They have odds and betting options on all the Puskas nominees and are well worth checking out.
Juan Quintero – River Plate v Racing Club
One of the biggest clashes in South American football – Quintero seems ridiculous to even consider shooting but strikes the dead ball with ferocity into the top corner from a seemingly impossible angle. A Roberto Carlos-esque golazo.
Amy Rodriguez – Utah Royals v Sky Blues
The last but certainly not the least – a mesmeric run from her own half, Rodriguez seems to be losing steam, so just jinks back inside and lashes the ball from 30 yards into the roof of the net – a wonderful individual effort.
We really do pity the panel who try to settle this argument.
