Nomme JK Kalju 0 Celtic 2
Celtic ran out two goals winners against Estonian side Nomme JK Kalju as they move another step closer to the group stages of the Champions League for the upcoming season. It was plane-sailing for Neill Lennon’s side as the Tallinn based outfit scored an own goal, while Marian Shved scored the second as the Scottish giants beat the Estonian champions 7-0 on aggregate. Celtic now play Romanian side Cluj in the third round of qualifying.
Neill Lennon opted to leave a couple of players out resting for the away tie due to the comfortable 5-0 win last week. The resting of players was probably due to Celtic in action this weekend in the Scottish Premiership against St Johnstone. Lennon gave Chris Jullien his debut for the club in defence, he looked very comfortable on the ball and put in a solid display.
Celtic got their opening goal after 10 minutes. Oliver Nitcham linked up with Mikey Johnston, who in turn hit the ball across the box only for Kalju defender Kulinits to slice the ball into his own net. The home side nearly had a goal of their own halfway through the opening period. Deniss Tjapkin just missed from the edge of the box. Leigh Griffiths had a chance for the Glasgow based outfit but no one could get on the end to meet his super cross.
Craig Gordon was called into action in the second half, denying Kaspar Paur from close range. Jullien could have had his first Celtic goal but his effort went flying over the bar from a header from a corner. Celtic were far more superior than their counterparts, however, it took until stoppage time before Shved fired into the second goal, it was a superb effort from around 20 yards which flew into the top corner. Celtic will surely fancy their chances of beating Cluj next week.
