Chinese side Guizhou Renhe have confirmed they are in talks with Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard about a possible January transfer move.
The Chinese club said today that they are in talks with the Chelsea veteran as Lampard looks set to follow former team-mates Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba to football’s lucrative far east.
Lampard has been linked to numerous sides since last season as it became clear that his time at Chelsea was coming to an end but the football world was blown away when Renhe chairman announced yesterday that Lampard had signed to the club.
Di Matteo refuted the claims after his sides draw yesterday before a Renhe official came out to state that talks were underway with the English midfielder.
“Yes, we are in contact with Lampard but nothing has so far been settled”, said deputy board chairman Yang Xiaoyu.
Chairman Dai was quoted in the Chinese media as saying that Lampard would join the club as captain. If Lampard were to join in January, it would give him time to settle in as the Chinese season doesn’t start until March.
China has become an attractive destination for ageing European stars with Anelka and Drogba both playing for Shanghai Shenhua on contracts said to be worth $300,000 a week each.
As Lampard journeys east, specualtion is rife that Anelka could be on his way back to West Ham as media in both China and England reported the transfer gossip.
