Ireland defender Cunningham signed for Cardiff City

With Greg Cunningham getting an opportunity to play in the English Premier League (EPL), the Irish left-back penned a three-year contract with newly-promoted Cardiff City at £3.5 million in June 2018.

Eight years after playing two matches in EPL for Manchester City, Cunningham has made a comeback to England’s top-tier league. With Ireland not a part of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Cunningham will have time on his hands to get ready for the upcoming season of the Premier League.

Previous Club

In the summer of 2015, Cunningham joined the second-tier side Preston North End from Bristol City on a free transfer. He was voted as the Player of the Year by fans and players in his maiden season at the club. In September 2016, Cunningham penned a new three-year contract.

However, Cunningham’s final season at Deepdale was marred by a knee surgery which sidelined him for four months. The left-footed player also captained the club in the absence of regular captain Tom Clarke.

In total, he appeared in 111 games in his three-year stint with the club.

Why the move?

Since making his international debut in May 2010 in an international friendly against Algeria, Cunningham played only four matches for the national side. He could not break into the national team squad after March 2013. Recently, the left-back was included in the national team and remained on the bench in two international friendlies against France and USA in May-June 2018.

EPL would provide Cunningham with the platform to make a statement and secure a place in the Irish national side

Will it be beneficial?

With Cardiff City getting promoted to EPL, the Irish man would be a crucial member of the team and is expected to get first-team exposure regularly. The left-back has solid defensive skills along with the ability to get forward whenever needed. He is also decent in the air.

Playing with the top teams will also help him to grow as a player. More importantly, he will earn the spotlight in the world of football news and if he could put up an impressive performance in the 2018-19 season, he can rejuvenate his career.
