Ireland 2 Ukraine 0
The Republic of Ireland Women’s U19 team have made an excellent start to the UEFA U19 Euro 2020 Qualifying with a 2-0 win over Ukraine. The team coached by Dave Connell are currently in Holland where they will play three games.
It was a good overall performance, two goals as well as a clean sheet would have impressed Connell. Ireland opened the scoring on 34 minutes when Jessie Ziu scored from a free kick. She created the goal herself winning the free, before smashing it to the back of the net. The Ireland lead was doubled just after the hour mark when Wexford Youths star Aoife Slattery headed home from a corner kick.
Speaking after the game Connell was delighted with his teams performance, He said to RTE Sport, I”t is always good to see moves that we worked on in training work out for the players” “There were lots of positives from the game for us. We’re obviously glad to have got the win and to have kept a clean sheet also. And with qualification in mind, the win is important. But we probably should have scored more goals. We had the chances, but just didn’t convert them. We will work on that ahead of the next game.”
He praised the opposition (Ukraine) but he also praised his own side with some excellent performance. He said It was a good team performance which is important with the rest of the campaign in mind. Emily Whelan didn’t get on the scoresheet today, but she was excellent for us. She worked extremely hard and created plenty of chances for the team. We’ll work hard for the next few days and will be looking forward to Saturday’s game.”
