Ashley Williams, current Swansea centre back, looks likely to make a move to London to join Arsenal.
The current Welsh international has reportedly agreed personal terms and looks set to join the Gunners – who finished 4th last season – for a fee believed to between £8-10 million.
Williams will join on the back of growing speculation about the future of Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.
The Belgian international has reportedly been offered to clubs overseas with a figure of £15 million enough to see him leave North London. Barcelona according to reports is in the market for a left sided centre back so a move for Vermaelen seems on the cards.
Williams, who will join from League Cup champions Swansea City, Williams is seen as a like for like replacement for Vermaelen in a move that many believe is the first move by the Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, to overhaul a defence that hasn’t been stable all season.
Wenger also plans to move for a right back, with enquiries having been made about French right back Sebastian Corchia, and a goalkeeper.
Williams had been a target for Liverpool with former Swansea boss, Brendan Rodgers, wanting to sign the international as a replacement for retiring Jamie Carragher. Rodgers had been blocked from signing his former player because of a veto from the Liverpool transfer committee.
