The English football season gets underway this afternoon and Sean Cremin gives us the latest team news and previews Manchester United v Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield. 2pm Kick off.
The first piece of silverware will be decided in the Community Shield when Manchester United face Wigan Atheltic. It’s not the heavyweight clash that we have been accustomed to in recent years as Wigan bucked the trend and restored the beauty of the F.A Cup when the defeated Manchester City last May.
The most interesting facet of this game is how Manchester United will line up under new manager, David Moyes. He has failed to add to his squad so far, despite signalling his intent to strengthen. One would imagine that Wayne Rooney won’t line out as the supposed unrest continues surrounding his future. It is a big game as they prepare for a tough start to their Premier League campaign.
Wigan will enjoy the occasion. It’s very much case of pressure off as they try to build momentum for the new season. They will be looking to bounce straight back to the Premier League under new manager, Owen Coyle. There is an Irish interest with James McCarthy and new signing, James McClean, so viewers will be hoping these players can find form ahead of upcoming qualifiers.
Players to Watch
Robin Van Persie – Manchester United
There will be a huge focus and also big pressure on Van Persie this season. He was brilliant in his first season at United and it will be interesting to see if he can maintain this or if ‘second season syndrome’ could set in. With their tough start to the season, United need him to find form early or it’s hard to see where goals will come from.
James McClean – Wigan Athletic
He has dropped a division and taken a pay cut to join Wigan and it will be interesting to see how the move works out. He shot to prominence under Martin O’Neil at Sunderland but he has left the Stadium of Light and may thrive under a new challenge. The big paces at Wembley will suit his pace and he could have an impact in the Community Shield.
Wayne Rooney is out due to a shoulder injury but Robin van Persie, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra should be fit after missing Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial.
Wigan are without captain Gary Caldwell but James McClean could make his debut. Thomas Rogne, is out with a back problem but Leon Barnett and Emmerson Boyce are expected to retain their places in Owen Coyle’s side. Grant Holt will lead the line with Marc Antoine-Fortune also in contention to start.
It’s very hard to see past a United win but there could be a lot of goal scoring bets that may tempt punters and with the amazing offer by @Boylesports, If Man Utd fail to win in 90 minutes they we will refund all First Goalscorer stakes! so get on Robin Van Persie @ 11/4
