We have a look at the predicted start team for the Republic of Ireland v Gibraltar, kick-off time 5pm on Saturday.
So with the Euro 2020 qualifiers beginning in the coming days we have decided to look at what side Mick McCarthy will name for his first game in charge since taking over the helm. Ireland face Gibraltar on Saturday, they follow that up three days with their first home game under the new boss against Georgia at the Aviva Stadium. It is almost expected that Ireland ill get the six points which would put them in good fettle going into games against the two highest rank teams Switzerland and Denmark, these will be played later on in 2019. Ghost betting company have some great advice on the match.
Many players have been left out of the squad for one reason or another players which I feel should be in side such as David Meyler and Cyrus Christie. Shane Long is out due to injury, while Stephen Ward announced his retirement last week. However you can only play with the players at your disposal and I expect Mick will start his strongest possible side in both games. So lets take a look at my possible starting 11 for the game with the minnows Gibraltar below.
Darren Randolph – Randolph no doubt will start as goalkeeper. The Middlesborough netminder enjoyed has enjoyed a good season to date and has made 16 clean sheets in the championship so far. Will surely start both games.
Seamus Coleman – Coleman has had ups and downs with Everton so far in the Premier League this season. He is still the best players in the squad in my opinion and is also captain so he will have to start at his customary right back position.
Shane Duffy – The Derry native has been like a brick wall for Ireland over the past few seasons, hence why he was named player of the year for the last two years. Duffy is an asset from dead ball situations such as corners and free kicks, He has scored 5 goals for Brighton this season so far. Will start at centre back.
Richard Keogh – The 32 year old Derby County club man could get the nod ahead of John Egan here. Derby are firmly in hunt for the play-off positions. Keogh adds experience as well as a toughness and would be the ideal player to partner Duffy in the centre of defence for the opening game.
Enda Stevens – The Sheffield United man has had a good year so far with Sheffield United. Has a big void to fill in that of Stephen Ward but he can do so and he can nail down a regular starting position if things go to plan for him. He likes to get forward and that will be needed in a group where Ireland will need to score goals.
Matt Doherty – Can also play in defence but he can play on the wing also. Has been a driving force for Wolves who are in 7th place in the Premier League table. He has scored 6 goals to date in the Premier League this season. Has to start whether if that will be in midfield or defence it’s up to McCarthy.
Jeff Hendrick – On his day he is one of best players in the squad. Has been somewhat misfiring for his side Burnley in terms of doesnt get regular game. However, in saying that he is a superb footballer and we need him in the side. Would be more attacking option in a game where Ireland would be expected to score a few goals.
Harry Arter – Another player that is good on the ball, his passing and his speed would be why I would select him. He will gaps and will spot when there is danger. An attacking player also would be needed against Gibraltar for goals.
James McClean – Difficult choice between Brady and McClean, but went with the Stoke City man as he is playing more regular for Stoke. He gives his all every game, wears his heart on his sleeve which I also like in a player that never gives up and shows so much passion for the jersey.
Sean Maguire – Maguire with Shane Long out now will be main man in attack. Match fitness could not be on his side due to injuries but has an impressive goalscoring record with Preston North End. Will be expected to start and grab a few goals against Gibraltar.
Dave McGoldrick – The Sheffield United ace has had a good season up front for the Blades. He has scored 12 goals this season so far so he knows where the goal is. McCarthy should opt to start him over uncapped Ronan Curtis and James Collins
