Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo injury doubt for Champions League Final

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has emerged as an injury doubt for the Champions League Final against Athletico Madrid.

The prolific attacking player, who will also feature for Portugal at this summer’s World Cup Final, had to leave warm ups early ahead of Madrid’s final La Liga game of the season against Espanyol.  It is thought that the injury was a recurrence of a long standing thigh injury which has plagued him for quite some time.

Although the Spanish giants saw their title hopes fade after results went against them last week, they still named a strong team including Ronaldo ahead of the game. After leaving the field shaking his head, he was replaced in the side by Spanish player Isco, himself a surprising snub from his national team ahead of  the World Cup in under four week’s time.

Ronaldo will also now have to share the European Golden Boot Award with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez. Both players scored thirty-one times this season, but with the Premier League season over this was Ronaldo’s last chance to take the award away from his Uruguayan counterpart.

Should he miss the much anticipated final against Athletico on May 24th in Lisbon, it would be a major blow both for his team and the draw of the contest as a whole. Ronaldo also won the FIFA Ballon d’Or award this year, taking the award from Barcelona’s Lionel Messi who had won the award on the last three previous occasions.

It is hoped that he will be fit for Portugal’s first World Cup group game against heavyweights German on June 15th.
