Robbie Keane to lead out Irish team managed by Mick McCarthy
A Republic of Ireland XI squad with a total of 1,109 senior caps will take on a Liverpool Legends team on Friday, April 12 in Aviva Stadium, in aid of the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust.
The match will see some of the biggest names in the game go head-to-head, in a bid to raise vital money for the rehabilitation of Sean Cox. The Irishman was the victim of an unprovoked attack outside Anfield last year ahead of Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League tie against AS Roma and is continuing his recovery.
Ireland’s all-time record goalscorer and appearance holder, Robbie Keane, will lead the team out as captain before representing Liverpool – one of his former clubs – in the second half. Other former Ireland international who wore the red jersey, Phil Babb, Jason McAteer and John Aldridge, are also expected to feature for both sides.
Led by current Ireland manager Mick McCarthy, the squad includes some of the country’s greatest-ever players who graced the international stage at FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships – while three players have 100 or more caps each.
