Scunthorpe United striker Paddy Madden looking forward to League One

Scunthorpe United striker Paddy Madden believes the Iron will be able to hold their own in League One next season.

The Irish striker experienced his second successive promotion after going up with Yeovil last year and hopes to use that experience to help the team makes waves in League One next season.

Madden was again on the scoresheet in the 2-2 draw with York for his third goal in nine games.

He said: “I think we can do very well in League One.

“When I was at Yeovil last year we were favourites to get relegated but we worked hard and I had a lot of players help coach me.

“I will now hope to pass that on. I am not saying I have a load of experience but I have now had two promotions so will pass on information I know.

“For example you can’t give strikers in that division any time because they take their chances a lot quicker.

“There are some great sides in League One and you get to play in some amazing stadiums.

“Hopefully we can push on next year and try and get promoted again.”

Madden said promotion with United had been an amazing experience and hoped many of the fans who attended Saturday’s game with York would return next season.

After gaining promotion last week away to Exeter he said it was good to celebrate it at home with the supporters although there was a slight disappointment that Scunthorpe could not clinch the title due to Chesterfield’s win.

Madden said: “The atmosphere from the fans was amazing and is one of the best I have played with. I think our first half performance was the best since I have been here.

“It was a good way to round off the season and now we can be happy. It will be a bit of a jump but we can look forward to League One. All the squad want to be a part of this.”

Madden also reserved praise for manager Russ Wilcox who has been behind the team’s record breaking run this season.

Madden added: “Russ has been amazing. He gets on well with all the players and treats everybody the same so we respect him.

“Nobody has got a bad word to say about him and he has done a tremendous job so the squad is glad we got promoted for him.”
