Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Southampton defender Jose Fonte. Jose Mourinho is keen on recruiting a new centre back before the transfer deadline ends.
ESPN are reporting that the Red Devils have held discussion with the Saints over a possible move for the Portuguese international. The 32 year old is the preferred choice for United with Juventus unlikely to offload Leonardo Bonucci while Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane would come as a hefty price.
United have already signed Eric Bailly from Spanish side Villareal this summer, but the need for a backup defender has urged Mourinho to step up and look for players in the market. Apart from Bailly, Daley Blind and Chris Smalling remain the only options for the centre back role at Old Trafford.
Fonte was part of Fernando Santos’ side that lifted the Euro 2016 trophy in France this summer and he is currently Southampton’s longest serving player having joined from Crystal Palace in 2010. Southampton value the defender in excess of £8 million, it remains to be seen if a deal will be struck or if the deal will fall through, which will mean Mourinho will have to look elsewhere.
