Watch: Jack Byrne Scores Two Wondergoals As Rovers Hammer Waterford

It is worrying times for Waterford FC – defeat to Cork left them in need of a result against Shamrock Rovers tonight at the RSC, but they were hammered, as the Dubs ran out 5-1 victors.

The rout largely comes as a result of a stunning performance from Ireland international Jack Byrne – who produced a display Mick McCarthy will certainly be delighted with on the night. The Rovers midfielder grabbed the first two goals of the evening – and both were strikes worthy of winning any game.

With the scores locked on 25 minutes, the floodgates then opened when Byrne took two touches before driving the ball out of his feet from thirty yards – the ball flying into the top left past a hapless Matt Connor to silence the home supporters.

However, lightning was to strike twice – as the Blues made the same mistake in giving Byrne space outside the box – stepping inside off the right before unleashing another unstoppable effort which sailed over Connor, effectively putting the tie to bed before the half-time whistle.

The night got from bad to worse from Waterford, as poor mistakes allowed Aaron Greene to grab a brace – and Thomas Oluwa rubbed salt into the wounds with Rover’s fifth.
That said, a stunning strike from Cory Galvin at 4-0 did give the home support something to cheer, on an otherwise dismal evening.

The sky is the limit for Byrne at present – as Rovers consolidate their grip on second place, while for Waterford – it’s back to the drawing board, Alan Reynold’s side facing a real relegation battle, having now lost 6 of their last 8.
