4 World Cup Records that Ronaldo and Messi won’t ever break

These two players are the best in the business at present. However, many will give reasons to argue which player is better.

Messi and Ronaldo have broken nearly every record they can break for their respective clubs, while the duo have also won 5 Ballon d’Or’s each. However, one criticism that could be made of both players is that they have failed to transfer this form over to the international stage. In fact, both players are yet to lift a World Cup and the World Cup in Russia could be the last chance saloon for both players to do so. We here at SportsNewsIreland have decided to look at 4 World Cup records both players will never be able to break.

1. Number of World Cup winner’s medals

Brazilian legend Pele remains the only player to lift the trophy on three occasions these coming in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He is the greatest player of all time and will go down in history either way. There are players like Cafu, Ronaldo (Brazil) Giuseppe Meazza who have won it twice. This is where Ronaldo and Messi will never break Pele’s record of three World Cup’s it may never be broken in fact. The closest Messi has come to winning the the tournament was in Brazil when they fell at the final hurdle to Germany. The closest Ronaldo has came to winning it was reaching a semi-final that was in 2006. Ronaldo is 33 and Messi is 30 which would mean they would have play a further 12 more years to have any chance of breaking this record. However, this wont happen.

2. Most goals scored at a Single World Cup

This record will never be broken in my opinion. Just Fontaine wrote his name in the record books with a magnificent World Cup in 1958. The French man scored 13 goals in 6 games. 60 years since that no one has really came close, Gerd Muller scored 10 at the World Cup in Mexico in 1970 but no one has come closer. Looking at Messi and Ronaldo in terms of goals scored, Messi has only scored 5 goals in his entire FIFA World Cup career so far, while Ronaldo has just scored three in his World Cup career.

3. Most World Cup Final appearances

This record will never be broken by Ronaldo or Messi. Cafu, regarded as one of the greatest right backs of all time played at 4 World Cups for Brazil and represented the nation in 3 World Cup Finals 1994,1998 and 2002. He is the only player in World Cup history to play in 3 different World Cup Finals. Putting things into perspective here, Ronaldo has never played in a final ,while Messi only has played in one.

4. Oldest Goalscorer

Roger Milla one of the greatest players in World Cup history broke his own record of been the oldest ever goalscorer at a World Cup at 42. Milla broke the record when he scored in Cameroon’s 6-1 loss to Russia at the 1994 World Cup. Messi is 30 and Ronaldo is 33 so realistically the chances of them going on to break this record is unlikely. Ronaldo would have to play for another 10 or so years to break the record and I can’t see that happening. Similarly for Messi he would have to play for 13 years to break the record again I don’t see this happening as he has hinted this could be his last summer in the Argentina colours.
