Manchester United and Liverpool look set to battle over Italian international defender Angelo Ogbonna. Ogbonna who plies his trade with Serie A side Torino was a member of the Italy 2012 squad that lost to Spain in the final. Both United and Liverpool have struggled defensively this season and messrs Ferguson and Rodgers could desperately use the Italian to shore up their back lines.
In an interview with tuttomercatoweb.com, Torino sporting director Gianluca Patrachi claims that Ogbanna has been watched by scouts from several of Europe’s top clubs including United. He is reluctant to let the defender go cheaply however, saying that Torino have already rejected an offer of £10 million. Patrichi believes Ogbanna to be worth at least £16 million to the coffers at Torino.
If United are to sign Ogbanna, they will have to fight off competition from both Merseyside clubs according to the Sun who report that not only did Liverpool send scouts to watch the defender against Cagliari but also that the Reds’ great rivals Everton are interested in taking Ogbanna to Goodison Park.
Both Liverpool and united could do with the 24 year old. United have been riddled with injuries in defensive positions and with Rio Ferdinand entering the twilight of his career, the 24 year old Italian may offer a solution to Sir. Alex Ferguson’s defensive issues. Liverpool could also do with a commanding presence at the back to fill the void left by Jamie Carragher who no longer operates at the peak of his powers. Despite keeping their first clean sheet of the season against Stoke last weekend, Liverpool’s defence has been porous this season having conceded 19 times in all competitions.
