Zinedine Zidane has been appointed manager of Real Madrid after Los Blancos sacked Santiago Solari.
Zidane has been given a contract until 2022 with the club he led to three Champions League titles in a row before stepping down last Summer. However, with less than a year away from the game he is now backed with the Spanish giants. The Madrid hierarchy felt they probably needed to change something following a dire week for them which has seen everything fall apart. Real Madrid lost both El Clasico games to rivals Barcelona, while they also trail in the La Liga table by 12 points. It got worse for them with a 4-1 defeat last week to Ajax Amsterdam.
Zidane has a superb record. He took charge of the club in 2016, winning the Champions League in his first season, before going on to win the Champions League and La Liga double in 2017. He stepped down as boss less than a week after his sides Champions League Final win over Liverpool last May, citing it was the right time to walk away. However, he obviously feels he has more to offer them.
The man effectively know as Zizou had a stellar career at Madrid in his playing days also. He won nine trophies at the club. He will look to keep them in the top four for Champions League qualification now with the league basically out of touch providing some poor results from Barcelona, which I can’t see happening. They are in fourth position at present with 11 games left in La Liga, they currently sit in third place ahead of Getafe.
A club statement confirmed the appointed of Zidane. It said “The Real Madrid board of directors, which met today, Monday 11 March 2019, has decided to terminate Santiago Solari’s contract as first-team coach, whilst Real Madrid have offered him the opportunity to remain at the club. The club thanked Solari for his time at Madrid and wished him the best for the future, Real Madrid wish to thank Solari for his work, commitment and the loyalty that he has always displayed towards this club, which is his home. “The board of directors also agreed on the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as head coach of Real Madrid with immediate effect for the remainder of the season and the next three campaigns, until 30 June 2022. “The Real Madrid president will address the media alongside Zinedine Zidane at 8pm (CET) tonight in the Santiago Bernabeu media room.”
