Dublin v Antrim – Pairc Tailteann – 3:00pm – GAAGO

Dublin and Antrim will go head to head to find out who makes the Leinster Semi-Final at a neutral venue in Meath this weekend.

Antrim has been on a revolution of sorts for the past few years, finishing above Dublin in the league campaign was a major coup for Darren Gleeson’s men.

Dublin is usually the dark horses come to championship time. Unlike the football side, they are not seen as the favourites for Liam McCarthy and had a poor league campaign.

However, the Dubs did manage to defeat Antrim earlier on in the league by an eight-point margin in May.

Both teams know each other well and whoever comes out on top will hope to bolster their chances going further into the championship.

Players to watch:

Dublin: Cian Boland

Antrim: Niall McKenna

Both Antrim and Kerry had secured their place in this year’s Joe McDonagh Cup Final before the final round of games two weeks ago. Given the late start to this year’s cup, there is no jump to the Championship for the victor. However, this fact won’t curtail either of these two teams who are hoping to reward a good season with silverware. Antrim vs Kerry is at 13:00 on Sunday as a curtain-raiser to the Senior Championship Final.

Most recently, Antrim played Meath in their final group game. The Ulster side showed no sign of respite despite already being qualified. Their scoreline of 2-30 was no doubt a sign of intent from Darren Gleeson’s side.

Gleeson refused to agree with those who consider his side to now be in ‘bonus territory’. The former Tipperary goalkeeper continued to say that his side’s earlier win over Kerry won’t grant them any advantage for this final which will “take a life of its own”.

The only blemish on Antrim’s otherwise perfect record this year was a draw with Carlow. Yet, the fact that they are undefeated and have already beaten Kerry this year will boost the players going into the climax whether Gleeson admits it or not.

Despite their defeat to Antrim in mid-November by seven-points, the Kingdom were the first to secure their place in the final. They bounced back from defeat with a convincing win over a strong Carlow side.

Kerry captain Bryan Murphy echoed Gleeson’s words in dismissing the suggestion that recent results would carry into this game.  “When it comes to a Final it’s anyone’s day,” he says. “Tactics nearly go out the window.”

Kerry have played Antrim thrice this year already but have come off worst on all three occasions. Yet, this is more than enough time to get to know an opponent so Sunday may allow the Munster men to finally decipher the highest rated Ulster Hurling team in Ireland.

The Joe McDonagh Cup Final is on RTÉ on Sunday.

Paddy Power have Antrim as 8/15 favourites versus Kerry’s 7/4 price. A draw is 9/1.

Prediction: Antrim.

Joe McDonagh Cup Final: Antrim vs Kerry, Sunday, December 13th, 13:00 (Croke Park).

For the second year in a row, Cavan have caused upset in Ulster by beating Monaghan. After looking like they were down and out last Saturday, a late rally saw them earn extra-time. Then, it looked like penalties were on the cards until Cavan keeper Raymond Galligan won the game with a long-range free. On the other hand, Antrim last featured in an Ulster final in 2009. The straight-knock out format of this year’s Championship doesn’t work in their favour. Yet, it may give the Antrim players the freedom to challenge Cavan on Saturday evening.

Cavan re-writing the script

After a disappointing relegation from Division 2 recently, Cavan were big underdogs going into the Championship opener. But, the Breffni men showed why they were not to be written off just yet with an incredible never-say-die attitude.

Cavan started the brighter against Monaghan. After ten minutes, they had a four-point lead. Oisín Pierson’s goal pushed them out in front. However, Monaghan came back strongly and took a seven-point lead into the break.

In the second-half, Cavan used the wind advantage wisely and began to claw in the deficit. By the time the clock was up Cavan had drawn level thanks to a superbly taken equaliser by Gerard Smith.

In a nervy extra-time period, Monaghan edged in front before Martin Reilly found the net for Cavan. Then, the final few minutes was a demonstration of long-range free taking. It looked like Rory Beggan had sealed a penalty shoot-out with a free in added time. But, with the last kick of the game Raymond Galligan sent Cavan through with a free from 58m out.

Last year, Cavan went all the way to the Ulster final. Mickey Graham will be delighted with the fight his team showed last weekend and will be hoping they can reach the decider again.

Antrim claimed third spot in Division 4 this year. In fact, they could have earned promotion if not for a thrashing by Wicklow in the first game back from lockdown. Lenny Harbinson will be hoping the extended break his team has had will work in their favour. In winter conditions, Cavan’s 90 minute battle with Monaghan will have its effects. No doubt, Antrim will be the fresher of these two sides.

The winner of Cavan vs Antrim plays Fermanagh or Down a week later.

Paddy Power don’t see another upset on the cards. They have Cavan at 1/7 versus Antrim’s 11/2. A draw is 12/1.

The game is live on BBC Northern Ireland.

Prediction: Cavan.

Antrim: Michael Byrne; Patrick Gallagher, Declan Lynch, Kevin O\’Boyle; Peter Healy, James McAuley, Niall Delargy; Colm Duffin, Michael McCann; Kevin Quinn, Mark Sweeney, Dermot McAleese; Paddy Cunningham, Conor Murray, Patrick McBride. Subs: Oisin Kerr, Ruairi McCann, Odhran Eastwood, Paddy McCormack, Mark Gardiner, Eoin Nagle, Tomas McCann, Eunan Walsh, Kristian Healy, Marc Jordan, Ryan Murray, Adam Loughran.

Cavan’s superb win over Monaghan in the preliminary round last Saturday set them up for a first  Ulster championship clash with Antrim since 2009.

The Allianz Football League game between Antrim and Waterford will now go ahead after all.

Antrim have now offered to travel to Dundalk for the Division 4 match on Saturday.

Waterford County Board had confirmed on Thursday that they would not travel to Portglenone for tomorrow’s game.

Some Waterford players had indicated that their employers expected them to self-isolate for 14 days if they travelled to Antrim.

The Antrim County Board initially offered to travel to Belfast but this was rejected by Waterford.

Dundalk was then suggested as an option with Waterford willing to travel to the Geraldines Louth GAA ground.

The Antrim County Board said in a statement:

“We believe the integrity of the league needs to be upheld. If we are good enough to collect 2pts we will do it in a fair and manly manner on the field of play.”

Five more members of the Antrim senior hurling squad have tested positive for Covid-19.

One player returned a positive test on Tuesday, leading to the entire squad then being tested.

On Wednesday evening, Croke Park facilitated ‘rapid-testing’ on the entire squad.

As a result, four more players and one member of the backroom staff have tested positive. Another player is also self-isolating having been identified as a close contact.

Antrim are scheduled to play Westmeath in the Joe McDonagh Cup in Belfast on Sunday.

The Saffrons intend to fulfil the fixture, but with a depleted squad.

In a statement, the Antrim County Board said:

“We in Antrim have confidence in all panel members and we put our best foot forward on Sunday.”

Waterford County Board has confirmed that its Allianz Football League game against Antrim in Portglenone on Saturday has been cancelled.

The Board confirmed that several Waterford players were told by their employers they would have to self-isolate if they travelled North.

Though there isn’t a requirement to isolate for 14 days, the Government advises against unnecessary journeys.

As Waterford are already out of the race for promotion, the game would fall into the “unnecessary journeys” category.

County Board Statement

In a statement, Waterford County Board said it had looked at all the options. The County Board did not make a decision lightly, it stressed.

“Having weighed up all the options and having regard to the genuine concerns of our players, we had no choice” the Déise statement read.

The Waterford statement went on:

“Our players come first as they have put everything on the line to date.” As a result, “(Waterford’s) management team felt obliged to respect (the players) health and welfare concerns.”

Saturday sees the return of inter-county action for the first time since the beginning of March. In Division 4, Wicklow vs Antrim marks the return to action. Just a point separate these teams in the table with the Ulster side second behind Limerick.

Allianz Football Division 4 round 6
Wicklow v Antrim, Aughrim, 12.30pm Preview and live score commentary

Wicklow suffered defeats to Carlow and Limerick before the lockdown. But, three wins against Sligo, Waterford, and London means they still have a real chance of promotion. A win over Antrim would go a long way in the Leinster side’s favour. Firstly, they would leapfrog Antrim in the table. Secondly, Sligo and Wexford are currently level with Wicklow in the lead so they cannot afford to lose ground with just two games remaining. In fact, their round 7 game is with Wexford. Hence, it could be a promotion shootout.

On the other hand, Antrim have only suffered defeat once in the League to date. This came at the hands of Sligo. Furthermore, a draw against Carlow has left them a point shy of the top of the Division. The suspension of football in March came at a bad time for Antrim. They had just beaten Limerick to put themselves in contention for the title. Now, they will have to find their form quickly after a long absence.

In round 7, Antrim host Waterford. As a result, the game with Wicklow is likely the most important of their remaining fixtures. A win will set them up for a good finish and potential promotion. However, a loss would likely condemn them to a mid-table finish.

Wicklow won’t pull any punches in this game. Their round 7 tie with Wexford is a preview of their Leinster Championship opener on November 1st. Therefore, manager Davy Burke may refrain from showing his strongest hand. Instead, some of his big guns will be deployed against Antrim for match practice.

In contrast, Antrim have an extra week before they began their Championship campaign. They are scheduled to play the winners of Monaghan and Cavan on the 7th of November.

It was another bumper weekend of GAA club hurling and football action.  Here’s the club GAA round-up of the major results from around the country.

The last four line-ups for the Limerick SHC was completed on Sunday when Doon overcame South Liberties. David O’Neill, Pat Ryan, and Micheal Ryan all raised green flags for the victors. They face Kilmallock next Saturday.  Na Piarsaigh will play Patrickswell next Saturday in the other semi-final of the Limerick SHC. They eased to a 13 points win over Ballybrown at the LIT Gaelic Grounds.

In the Tipperary SHC, Loughmore Casrleiney had a surprisingly easy passage to the final. They accounted for a disappointing Nenagh side on a 1-22 to 1-12 scoreline. Tipperary marksman John McGrath added 12 points (0-7) from frees. His inter-county teammate Jake Morris was sent off for the losers. They will be joined by Kiladangan. The North Division side proved too strong for Drom-inch. 1-21 to 0-9 was the final tally in Thurles. Also in Tipperary in the SFC Clonmel Commercials reached the final. They dispatched a game Kilshellan-Kilcash by six points. They await the winner of Loughmore and Moyle Rovers who will square-off next weekend.

In Kilkenny SHC action the maroon and white of Dicksboro were the first side through to the semi-finals. They defeated Bennettsbridge at UPMC Nowlan Park. O’Loughlin Gaels also made the last four.
