Heike Holsten and her Irish-bred mare Sambuca will be the first Irish equestrian combination in action. They begin their Olympic campaign at 9.36 am Irish time on Sunday morning.

The pair will compete in the Dressage competition at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Sixty competitors that take part in the opening Grand Prix. The top 18 will qualify for the individual final on Wednesday, July 28th.

Eventing

The Irish Eventing team is Sam Watson, Cathal Daniels, Sarah Ennis and Austin O’Connor (reserve). They will get their Olympic campaign underway on Friday, July 30th, with the opening Dressage phase. Next, the Cross Country takes place on Sunday, August 1st. The Eventing team and individual Olympic medals will be decided after the jumping phase on Monday, August 2nd.

Showjumping

The Irish Show Jumping team arrive in Tokyo hoping to challenge for the team gold medal. The team of Bertram Allen, Darragh Kenny, Cian O’Connor and Shane Sweetnam (reserve) will first compete in the individual competition on Tuesday, August 3rd.

Thirty of the 75 starters are set to qualify for the individual final on Wednesday, August 4th. The first round of the Show Jumping team competition takes place on Friday, August 6th, with 10 of the 20 teams looking to book a place in the team final on Saturday, August 7th.

Richard Howley and Denis Lynch achieved wins in Spain and Germany respectively on Sunday.

Sligo’s Howley scored another major international win in the two-star Grand Prix at Oliva in Spain, riding Arlo de Blondel.

From a list of 83 starters, 10 made it into the jump-off. At the end, Howley had almost two seconds to spare over British runner-up John Whitaker with Unick du Francport. Howley had also taken victory in Friday’s World Ranking class in Oliva with Chinook.

Denis Lynch and GC Chopin’s Bushi win in Germany

At Riesenbeck in Germany, Denis Lynch and GC Chopin’s Bushi took an impressive win in the feature 1m55 speed competition.

Drawn 11th to go of 53 competitors, Lynch set what proved an unbeatable clear in 64.02 seconds, winning almost €20,000.

Lynch had almost a second and a half to spare over German runner-up Maurice Tebbel with Don Diarado. Another German, Christian Kukuk, finished third with Quintino. Clare’s Eoin McMahon was also in the prizes and finished eighth with Chacon 2.

Cathal Daniels is runner-up in Portugal

In Eventing, Cathal Daniels and The Irish Sport Horse Shannondale Mari finished in runner-up spot in the CCI3*L at the Portugal Winter tour in Barroca d’Alva.

The pair finished on their Dressage score of 34.2 just 0.6 of a penalty behind the French winner Regis Prud Hon with Bennix de Bory.

Ireland’s Brian Kuehnle took fifth place with Tullybards Now Or Never on a score of 37.5.

Galway’s Cathal Daniels won the feature CCI4*-S at this weekend’s Portugal Winter Tour in Barroca d’Alva.

Ireland’s 2019 European Championship bronze medallist led from start to finish in the CCI4*-S with the Sarah Hughes-owned gelding Barrichello. They were the only combination to finish on their Dressage score (29.7). Daniels also took sixth place with My Lucky Day on a score of 40.1.

In the CCSI3*-S, Daniels was runner-up with The Irish Sport Horse Shannondale Mari (ISH) on a score of 35.5. Ireland’s Jennifer Kuehnle finished fourth with Polly Blue Eyes.

The Portugal Winter Tour continues until December 6th, with two more weeks of International competitions on offer.
