Lambourn (13/2) gave Aidan O’Brien an 11th Betfred Derby with success today at Epsom.

It was also a first success in the race for Co Cork-born jockey Wayne Lordan and an eighth in the past 12 years for successful owners, the Coolmore partners.

Lordan and Lambourn, a son of Australia led from the stalls and, in the style of Serpentine in 2020, was not for catching.

He extended his advantage over the field as they came down the home straight.

The 50/1 chance in the betting market, Lazy Griff, was runner-up for trainer Charlie Johnston and jockey Christophe Soumillon three and three-quarter lengths behind the winner.

Dylan Browne McMonagle aboard Tennessee Stud, also owned by the same partners as the winner, finished third for Joseph O’Brien, a further length back.

“Everybody puts in so much”

Aidan O’Brien, for whom it was an 11th success in the Betfred Derby, said:

“I’m only a small part of a very big team. For everybody – everybody puts in so much, I cannot tell you. I can’t tell you the privilege it is for me to be dealing with everybody. Australia [Lambourn’s sire] is a great Derby winner, very genuine, and that’s what this horse is – uncomplicated, genuine and committed. He always has been.

“His runs this year have been very good this year – he was second to Delacroix, and then was very impressive in Chester. Chester again – you have to be on your game and you have to stay, and that’s the way he was. Ryan loved him in Chester and he obviously can’t ride them all. He’s probably an Irish Derby horse, and he will get further as well.”

“It’s a special place to win”

Wayne Lordan was asked by ITV Racing what it was like to win the Derby, with the Cork jockey admitting:

“When you’re growing up… I’ve been watching you (Johnny Murtagh), Pat Smullen, Mick Kinane, and it’s the race you always want to… Then when you get a ride in it, you’re absolutely delighted. I work for Aidan O’Brien, Ballydoyle, Coolmore, and when they give you the opportunity to ride a horse like this, in a race like this, and for him to do it… it’s a special race to win.”

Minnie Hauk (9/2) won the 2025 Betfred Oaks at Epsom this afternoon giving Aidan O’Brien an 11th victory in the fillies’ classic.

Ridden by Ryan Moore, the daughter of Frankel held off her stable companion, Whirl (15/2) and Wayne Lordan by a neck at the finishing line of the one mile four furlongs contest.

Whirl, a daughter of Wootton Bassett, had made most of the early running, setting the pace for the perceived stable number one choice, Minnie Hauk.

With both fillies battling inside the final furlong, Minnie Hauk found a little more to claim the Group 1 prize.

Whirl finished a further four lengths ahead of the impressive Betfred 1000 Guineas winner at Newmarket last month, Desert Flower, the 11/10 favourite today.

The win is the sixth success for the Coolmore partners since Minding won in 2016.

The 7/2 race favourite Camille Pissarro won the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly on Sunday.

It was a second success in the race for trainer Aidan O’Brien who was previously successful with St Mark’s Basilica.

Ridden by Ryan Moore, Camille Pissarro was a half-length winner of the one mile two and a half furlongs French Derby.

The William Buick-ridden Cualificar (12/1), trained in France by Andre Fabre for Godolphin, took the runner-up spot.

John and Thady Gosden’s Detain, and Irish-bred owned by Juddmonte Farms, was third, a neck behind the second placer.

The other Aidan O’Brien runner- Trinity College (20/1), with Wayne Lordan in the saddle – who cut out most of the pace for Camille Pissarro, stayed on to finish fourth, a neck further behind.

Sired by Coolmore Stud’s Wootton Basseett, and owned by a Coolmore partnership, Camille Pissarro was a second French classic success for his sire, after Henri Matisse won the French 2000 Guineas last month.

Lake Victoria (10/11 favourite) and Ryan Moore gave Aidan O’Brien another success in the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh on Sunday.

The daughter of Frankel, unbeaten as a juvenile last season, tasted defeat for the first time when beaten in the BetFred 1000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month.

With her trainer Aidan O’Brien admitting at the time, and since, that the Coolmore partners-owned filly wasn’t fully ready for the English classic, hopes were high that she could get back to winning ways this afternoon at The Curragh.

In today’s filly’s classic, Lake Victoria was all class as she produced a dominant performance, winning by an easy two and a quarter lengths, to give O’Brien an 11th win in the fillies’ classic.

The Adrian Murray-handled California Dreamer (50/1), with David Egan in the saddle, were second.

Cercene (20/1) was a further length and three-quarters back in third for trainer Joe Murphy and rider Gary Carroll.

Los Angeles (10/11 favourite) won the Group 2 Coolmore Stud City Of Troy Irish EBF Mooresbridge Stakes at The Curragh this afternoon.

Last season’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner was making his 2025 return to the track under Ryan Moore.

Running over one mile and two furlongs, the Aidan O’Brien-trained four-year-old son of Camelot held off the late challenge of the 2024 Mooresbridge Stakes winner White Birch.

The runner-up was returning to the track for the first time since beating Auguste Rodin here last May.

Officer wins Tetrarch Stakes

The Coolmore Stud Henry Longfellow Irish EBF Tetrarch Stakes went to Officer, trained by Aidan O’Brien at Ballydoyle.

By Dubawi out of Hydrangea, the Ryan Moore-ridden colt was a previous seven furlong winner on good ground. He had finished third to Big Gossey on his most recent visit to The Curragh in March.

Wins for O’Brien brothers

O’Brien’s sons, Joseph and Donnacha, both visited the winner’s enclosure this afternoon.

The Group 3 Coolmore Stud Auguste Rodin Irish EBF Athasi Stakes was won by Atsila (11/1) for Gavin Ryan and Donnacha O’Brien.

Al Shaqab’s Andab (8/1) took the Irish EBF Median Sires Series Maiden for Joseph O’Brien and Dylan Browne McMonagle.

First Stakes win for Tally Ho’s Starman

Lady Iman (4/7 favourite) claimed the Holden Plant Hire First Flier Stakes in impressive fashion for Colin Keane, Ger Lyons and the O’Callaghans of Tally Ho Stud. This was a first Stakes winner for Tally Ho Stud’s sire Starman.

The Coolmore partners-owned debutant True Love, a full-sister to Truly Enchanting, was runner-up, one and a quarter lengths behind the winner.

Murkala (7/2 joint-favourite) took the Keadeen Hotel Irish EBF (Fillies) Handicap for trainer Johnny Murtagh. In the colours of the late H H Aga Khan, three year-old filly, ridden by Rory Mulligan, was a one length winner over the Aidan O’Brien-trained Sweet Chariot.

Jockey Wayne Hassett and trainer Pat Murphy teamed up for a winner with Free Solo (10/1) in the P G Duffy & Sons Citroen Apprentice Handicap.

The concluding The Treacy Group Supporting Newbridge Parishes Day Handicap went to 50/1 chance Prime Sign, in the hands of Billy Lee, for conditioner Andy Oliver.

Aidan O’Brien won his seventh British Flat Trainer’s Championship, his first since 2017.

Though the British season officially runs from January 1 to December 31, the Ballydoyle trainer leads the standings by more than £3 million after a string of big-race successes.

Breeders’ Cup Classic contender City Of Troy has spearheaded O’Brien’s efforts in Britain this year, winning a Group 1 hat-trick in the Betfred Derby, Coral-Eclipse and Juddmonte International at York most recently.

Kyprios returned to the top of the staying division with victories in the Gold Cup and Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, while Jan Brueghel led home a one-two for the stable in the Betfred St Leger at Doncaster.

As usual, Aidan O’Brien was quick to deflect praise as he emphasised the importance of the team effort at Ballydoyle and Coolmore.

“It is a big team effort from everyone in Ballydoyle and Coolmore,” O’Brien said. “There are so many special people in so many different areas that if I started talking about them, I would be here until tomorrow. You can have the horses and the place but, if you don’t have the people, it won’t happen.

“The owners are the people who put the resources in every year, to try and help us make it better. They put a lot of time in and give us advice. We do our best, give information back, and try to follow the roadmap that they draw for us. Some years it goes very well, some years it is ordinary, and some years it is medium.

“This was a good year for us. We won plenty of good races. I am just delighted for everybody when we do have a good year. We don’t take anything for granted and try to look to the future.”

Kyprios completed the perfect season, as he remained unbeaten in the Group 2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained 8/11 favourite showed his strength and determination was he ran out a two and a quarter length winner of the longest race on British Champions Day.

Ridden by Ryan Moore, the son of Galileo tracked his stable companion The Euphrates throughout most of the contest, with the recent Prix Du Cadran winner at ParisLongchamp taking command on entering the home straight.

Though Sweet William (8/1 and Trawlerman (5/1) last year’s third and winner respectively, challenged last season’s runner-up, the Moyglare Stud and Coolmore partners-owned Kyprios dug deep to improve his season’s record to seven wins from seven race.

Sweet William, with Rab Havlin in the saddle, was second for John and Thady Gosden, while Trawlerman and William Buick were a length and a half back in third place.

Incredibly the victory was a first win for Ballydoyle handler Aidan O’Brien at British Champions Day since 2019.

Speaking to the assembled media post-race, O’Brien said:

“All credit goes to the team – everyone at home who has done all the work with him and have a very close connection to him. It is incredible to have him back [Kyprios had a serious infection in a joint capsule after the 2022 season]. We thought the best that would happen would be that we could save him to go to stud. He still has a massive team around him. His stable is outside the front door and we see him every day.

“He is a very special horse. Ryan was in total control on him after the first furlong, and it was a joy to watch it. He is relentless and has an unbelievable amount of quality, so it doesn’t matter if you go slow or if you go fast, he just goes there and he switches off. Ryan rides him incredibly and knows him inside out.”

O’Brien continued by discussing the winner’s attitude to racing:

“He is very relaxed, loves racing, and he loves this distance and finds it very comfortable. Credit to the lads for leaving him at this distance – he enjoys it. You wouldn’t have known he had had a race the last day and he didn’t lose any weight. He is so laidback, his blood doesn’t get up until after the race – you can see him now, having a buck – but it takes a race to get his blood up.

“The plan was to come here, give him the winter off, then give him two trials before the Gold Cup next year. So that’s what we are working for – we will get through the winter and the spring, and try to come back here for the Gold Cup.”

Bluestocking gave jockey Rossa Ryan a first Irish Group 1 victory with success in the Cairn Community Games Pretty Polly Stakes at The Curragh on Saturday afternoon.

Trained in England by Ralph Beckett, last year’s Darley Irish Oaks runner-up, had to battle late to get past last season’s Group 1 Coronation Stakes winner Emily Upjohn in the one mile two furlongs contest.

With Lumiere Rock and Dylan Browne McMonagle cutting out the early pace, the John and Thady Gosden-handled Emily Upjohn looked a serious threat as she loomed up on the outside of the Joseph O’Brien-trained daughter of Saxon Warrior.

With rider Kieran Shoemark looking confident aboard Emily Upjohn, she was soon joined by the Juddmonte Farms’-owned Bluestocking and Galway native Rossa Ryan in the saddle.

The two fillies battled gamely to the line, with Bluestocking, a daughter of Camelot, holding sway on the line, with half a length called as the official distance between winner and runner-up.

With the visiting runners taking the first and second place, Aidan O’Brien’s Content, with Ryan Moore in the saddle, was best of the home team, three and three-quarter lengths further back in third place.

Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore had earlier teamed up for a Group double, with Truly Enchanting and Jan Breughel tasting success.

Truly Enchanting,13th in the Group 2 Queen Mary over five furlongs recently at Royal Ascot, was in the winner’s enclosure today, taking the six-furlong Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes for fillies from Adrian Murray-trained and David Egan-ridden California Dreamer in the colours of AMO Racing Limited.

The second part of the Coolmore, O’Brien, Moore Group double was the success of Jan Breughel in the Group 3 Al Basti Equiworld International Stakes over one mile two furlongs.

Jan Breughel, a full-brother to Dawn Rising who was winner of the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2023, had a neck advantage over the Joseph O’Brien-trained and Dylan Browne McMonagle-ridden Trustyourinstinct in the colours of J.P. McManus.

Auguste Rodin got back to winning ways at Leopardstown on Saturday as he took out the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes.

The winner of the Epsom Derby and the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh earlier this year, Auguste Rodin has disappointed hugely on two occasions, namely the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

This afternoon, however, the son of Deep Impact showed his battling qualities as he held off the challenge of his stable companion, and last year’s winner of the race, Luxembourg (Séamie Heffernan), by a half-length. Hollie Doyle aboard Nashwa was a short-head further back in third for John and Thady Gosden.

The three Ballydoyle runners, Luxembourg, Point Lonsdale (eventual 6th), and Auguste Rodin cut out the running in that order.

Ryan Moore and Auguste Rodin made their challenge on the outside of Luxembourg and Heffernan and fought off his stable companion’s challenge to claim a fourth career Group 1 success.

The winning trainer, Aidan O’Brien, for whom it was a 12th Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes win, said of the winner:

“A couple of times this year it all went totally wrong. All the ducks went against him. Usually you want them all to go with you but they all went against him. Ryan (Moore, the winning rider), before it went completely wrong in Ascot, he took him out of the race so he did no mental or physical damage to him. That’s why he came out of the race so well.”
