Cork vs Limerick – Munster SFC Quarter-Final Preview, Teams & How to Watch Live

Cork v Limerick

Munster Senior Football Championship – Quarter-Final

Throw-in: 6pm, Saturday

Venue: TUS Gaelic Grounds

Live on: Irishscores.com

Cork travel to Limerick on Saturday evening for a mouthwatering Munster Championship clash that promises plenty of intrigue. While Limerick arrive buoyed by their Division Four title win, Cork’s steady finish in Division Two and recent form make them slight favourites heading into this provincial quarter-final.

Limerick produced an impressive league campaign, capped off with a title-clinching victory over Wexford at Croke Park. James Naughton was electric throughout, contributing 4-12 in his last league appearances, with Iain Corbett and Tommie Childs also playing pivotal roles.

However, history is against the Shannonsiders—they haven’t beaten Cork in the Championship since 2003. That won’t faze Jimmy Lee’s side, who will look to feed off home support and Naughton’s scoring touch.

Cork, meanwhile, have stuck with the same XV that beat Cavan in their final Division Two fixture. That means three championship debuts: Neil Lordan (Ballinora), Seán Brady (Ballygarvan), and Seán McDonnell (Mallow). John Cleary’s side are building momentum, and with the likes of Ian Maguire and Chris Óg Jones in strong form, they’ll be confident of progressing.

The bench is strengthened too, with Maurice Shanley, Seán Powter, and Tommy Walsh all returning from injury just in time for the championship opener. Cork’s last Munster title came in 2012—ending that drought starts here.

What’s at Stake:

The winner will face Kerry in the Munster semi-final on Saturday, April 19th. If Cork win, the game will be played at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Cork Starting XV:

Mícheál Aodh Martin; Seán Brady, Daniel O’Mahony, Neil Lordan; Brian O’Driscoll, Rory Maguire, Mattie Taylor; Ian Maguire, Colm O’Callaghan; Paul Walsh, Eoghan McSweeney, Seán McDonnell; Mark Cronin, Brian Hurley, Chris Óg Jones.

Subs: Patrick Doyle, Briain Murphy, Maurice Shanley, Darragh Cashman, Seán Powter, Tommy Walsh, Seán Walsh, Conor Cahalane, Ruairi Deane, Cathail O’Mahony, Hugh O’Connor.

Limerick Starting XV:

Josh Ryan; Cormac Woulfe, Colm McSweeney, Darren O’Doherty; Barry Coleman, Iain Corbett, Mark McCarthy; Emmet Rigter, Tommie Childs; Paul Maher, James Naughton, Seán Clancy; Darragh Ó Síochrú, Peter Nash, Cillian Fahy.

Subs: Jeffrey Alfred, Ruadhan O’Connor, Diarmaid Buckley, Rob Childs, Darragh O’Hagan, Killian Ryan, Tadhg Ó Síochrú, Andrew Meade, Darragh Murray, Jamie Baynham, Danny Neville.

Where to Watch:

Catch the match live scores on Irishscores.com throw-in at 6pm on Saturday evening.

Report: Ronan McCarthy Leaves Cork

It is understood that Cork senior footballer manager Ronan McCarthy has left his post according to reports.

It has been revealed that a meeting between Cork GAA and McCarthy took place on Monday night where a Cork GAA executive decided not to extend McCarthy’s contract into another year after an original two-year agreement.

It is understood the McCarthy was hoping to stay on as manager and was eager to improve on Cork’s lacklustre finish to their championship season after being dismantled by Kerry in the Munster final.

It is believed that McCarthy had requested an extension on his already established agreement with Cork GAA, which would have brought him up to 2024 as the manager was rejected last night and confirmed by Cork officials today.

While some players in the panel have shown respect and satisfaction with McCarthy and his backroom staff since his arrival as a coach. Cork GAA executives have had enough and have decided to let McCarthy go.

Report: Ronan McCarthy Leaves Cork

Under McCarthy, Cork retained their Division 2 Allianz League status this year, but being hammered by Kerry in the Munster final, losing 4-22 to 1-9 in Killarney.

His highlight as Cork manager was throwing Peter Keane’s Kerry in last year’s Munster semi-final last year with a dramatic last-minute goal. They ultimately lost in the final to Tipperary at Páirc Ui Chaoimh.

After four seasons in charge of the Cork senior football team, McCarthy has a 50% winning record in all competitions. In League and Championship, he has won 18 of his 36 games, losing 17 and drawing one.

A search for the new Cork manager will be already underway, with Bobbie O’Dwyer, who was in charge of the Cork minors who captured All-Ireland success in 2019 already in contention.

Paudie Murray and Brian Dowling have spoken highly of their teams after a dramatic game in the All-Ireland camogie semi-final

Cork 0-15

Kilkenny 1-11

Paudie Murray explained the decision to leave out skipper Linda Collins as a requirement for impetus from his bench and that call proved a masterstroke, as the Courcey Rovers forward was a danger for all 14 minutes of her involvement, concluding with a dramatic winner as the clock just wound into the fourth and final minute of injury time.

It was a stunning conclusion to a riveting affair that Cork dominated, for the most part, the wonderful Chloe Sigerson shooting five points.

On the red card for Cronin, Murray said to not have seen the incident but felt that Katrina Mackey should have had a penalty when Meighan Farrell came from nowhere to deny the full-forward a goal.

“I thought our first half was good, but our third quarter killed us. We spoke about a lot of things during the week and I think some of them went out the window. That 15 minutes really annoyed us. But I suppose Kilkenny were always going to have their period of dominance so I thought we showed great composure and great character. I think the team is starting to develop its own character,” said Murray.

“It takes a small bit of time for a new team to develop a new personality in the dressing-room and new characters. I think they are starting to do that.

“This is a very young team. Ciara O’Sullivan is 19, Fiona Keating 20, we have a lot in around the 21/22 years. This is a big day out for them. I thought we managed it very well.”

Brian Dowling, who had won an All-Ireland in his first season as manager last year, having previously served as deputy to Ann Downey, was understandably downbeat.

“The first half was a bit disappointing. I asked the girls for more energy and in fairness, they brought that to Cork and in fairness to these girls over the last number of years.

“They’ve died with their boots on for Kilkenny camogie.”

“I can’t ask for any more of them since I’ve been involved with them and unfortunately there are just days like this when you come up a little bit short and we’re just going to have to lick our wounds now.

“We got a great goal and we even pushed on to go a bit up but we probably needed to go (more) up. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen today.

“I don’t think we hurled as well as we could, especially in that second quarter of the first half, we probably didn’t score too much in that quarter but I can’t fault these girls for the effort and they’ve been great champions. Any time you play Cork, there’s never been anything between them and, we got the lucky breaks last year and they got them today.”

He hailed the character of his players.

“It wasn’t easy for these girls to lose three All-Irelands; it would have been easy to pack it in and retire but players like Collette Dormer, Denise Gaule, and Katie Power – what she’s gone through to get on the pitch is unbelievable. They’ll do anything to play, injections, whatever.

“Kellyann Doyle was only passed fit last night.

“How she was able to play that match I’ll never know. She couldn’t raise her arm on Friday evening.”

“I can’t speak highly enough of these girls – they’d die for the Kilkenny jersey. There’s a great bond in that group, but it’s so disappointing when you lose. You learn a lot more when you lose so you have to move on from here.”

The GAA.ie Hurling Team of the Week for the past weekend of action on the inter-county level of the sport has been revealed.

Six sides are represented in this week’s edition of the GAA.ie Team of the Week.

Waterford and Cork lead the way with four selections each after their All-Ireland quarter-final wins over Tipperary and Dublin respectively.

Two Tipperary players make the side after their performances against Waterford but only one Dublin player joins them after the Cork game.

Two Offaly players appear in the side after the county’s fantastic performance against Derry in the Christy Ring Cup final.

The final spot is granted to Mayo after their fantastic Nickey Rackard Cup final victory over Tyrone.

Tipperary’s Cathal Barrett and Ronan Maher are given corner-back spots on the side for their displays against Liam Cahill’s Waterford.

Barrett has excelled to become one of the game’s top man markers and showed his quality in a tough game for the side’s defence by keeping Patrick Curran in his pocket.

Ronan Maher played a more attacking role than his teammate and was wing-back, despite the number on his shirt and his placement in the GAA.ie Team of the Week.

Maher scored 0-3 from play to help the Premier County fight for the win until the final whistle, even after a controversial penalty.

Waterford’s Jamie Barron ran the show for the opposition in Páirc Uí Chaoimh at the weekend to take them beyond Tipperary and, ultimately, save their season after an early exit from the Munster Senior Hurling Championship.

The midfielder dictated play when his side was in possession and added 0-4 of his own from long range.

His tenacity and never-say-die attitude off-the-ball was integral to Waterford’s impressive victory too.

Offaly’s Oisin Kelly as the sole representative from the Christy Ring Cup as his performance helped his county to their first third-tier hurling title and promotion to the 2022 Joe McDonagh Cup.

Oisin Kelly’s seven points and presence in the forward lines was devastating to the Derry defence, who failed to keep him locked up.

His performance secured second-tier hurling for his side, which looks nice alongside their Division One status.

All-Ireland Hurling Championship quarter-final – Dublin v Cork – 7:00 pm – Sky Sports

Dublin will face-off against Munster rivals Cork in Thurles at Semple Stadium on Saturday, July 31st at 7:00 pm in the second All-Ireland Hurling Championship quarter-final live on Sky Sports.

This tie is another mouthwatering game after an already entertaining hurling championship season which has seen numerous shocks so far.

Both Dublin and Cork supporters will be allowed to watch the game live, with 4,400 fans set to be in attendance at Semple Stadium in Thurles.

Now, Dublin v Cork will be the second Hurling quarter-final of the 2021 season.

The two sides met in last year’s All-Ireland Qualifiers Round 1, which saw Cork come out on top with a 1-25 (28) to 0-22 (22) victory in Tipperary.

In Leinster, Dublin have been much improved compared to the last few seasons, beating Antrim comprehensively by 18 points in the quarter-finals.

They went on to defeat Galway in a shock upset by 4 points at Croke Park.

Facing Kilkenny in the Leinster final, putting up a resilient performance but faded in the end, losing by 9 points.

Cork on the other hand has had a mixed campaign as of yet. Facing All-Ireland champions Limerick in the Munster semi-final losing 2-22 (28) to 1-17 (20).

Their last game was against Clare in Round 2 of the All-Ireland Qualifiers, winning in a close game by 2 points with the scoreline 3-19 (28) to 1-23 (26).

The winner of this game will meet the all-conquering and reigning All-Ireland champions Limerick in the semi-final.

Conclusion

During this stage of the championship, anyone can beat anyone, especially in hurling.

The Rebels have beaten the Dubs the last three times they have faced off in the championship.

Starting off in 2013 in the All-Ireland semi-final, winning 1-19 (22) to 1-24 (27).

They faced off again in the 2016 All-Ireland Qualifiers Round 1, with Cork getting over the line with a 3-point victory. They faced off in last year’s All-Ireland Qualifiers Round 1, which saw Cork come out on top again.

Based on the recent history between the two teams and how hot and cold Dublin are when it comes to the big games, a Cork win is more likely.

Prediction: Cork by 11 points

Kerry has put all questions to bed after last years shock loss to Cork – storming past the Rebels to claim the Munster title.

Claiming their 82nd Munster championship title, the Kingdom demolished rivals Cork 4-22 (34) to 1-09 (12) at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney.

Pulling out a statement to the rest of the teams left in the championship with a 22-point win – reaching another All-Ireland semi-final.

The opening five minutes were madness – Cork had a three-point lead with scores from Michael Hurley (2) and Daniel Dineen giving his side the opening spoils.

At the other end of the pitch, Kerry broke with pace, with David Clifford and Sean O’Shea missing guilt edged chances – although Michael Martin made some crucial saves to keep the Kingdom at bay.

By the 16th minute, the scoreline read 0-03 to 0-05 to Cork, with Kerry looking sloppy in their play, often giving the ball away from overly eager hand passing – mainly due to Cork’s rough tackling.

Cork’s only goal of the game came after Kerry captain Paul Murphy was dispossessed, leading the Rebels to quickly counter-attack with Ian Maguire handing it off to Brian Hurley who cut inside to finish past Shane Ryan.

The goal gave Cork the boost of confidence they so badly needed – ahead at the water break by 1-05 to 0-04.

The break itself did no favours for Cork, and seemingly gave Kerry a much-needed break and mental rest to regroup.

Coming out with six unanswered points to get a foothold in the game.

Luke Connolly kicked Cork’s first score in 12 minutes after Kerry’s assault, with the score now 0-10 to 1-06, defender Brian O’ Beaglaoich ran through the right-hand side of the Cork defence and slotted the ball home for Kerry’s first goal – and his second-ever championship goal.

At the start of the second half, Kerry was leading 1-12 to 1-07.

Sean O’Shea ran brilliantly through the middle of the park to lay it off to Paul Geaney, who finished calmly to give Kerry a further 8-point lead.

Paudie Clifford laid it off for Sean O’Shea for Kerry’s third goal of the game to make it 3-14 to 1-07.

Geaney got his second goal of the game after some quick passes around the Cork box saw a scuffle before the Dingle man tapped the ball into the net from close range.

Thankfully for Cork, the game ended soon after that, only scoring 0-02 points in the second half, losing Ruairi Deane to a red card – sustaining their biggest ever losing margin to Kerry in championship history.

Now, Kerry will turn to either Tyrone or Monaghan, with an All-Ireland semi-final in three weeks time – capturing the 82nd Munster title will give them unbridled confidence going forward.

This match will throw in at 16:30 in the LIT Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. The match will also be televised by Sky Sports for anyone without a ticket.

Clare was relegated to the qualifiers after a contentious game against Tipperary in the Munster championship. The Banner since beat Wexford by three points last weekend.

Other than the obvious choice of Tony Kelly, young corner forward Mark Rodgers was a bright spark when he came on in the last two games. Hopefully he can improve on those performances against Cork.

On the other hand, Cork were one of many teams to be taught a lesson by reigning champions, Limerick in Munster. Cork did not play badly in the game but could not match Limerick’s quality across the field.

Corner forward, Shane Kingston managed to score 1-01 in that loss so he will be a major part of Cork’s attack in the remainder of the championship.

These two nearby counties last faced each other in the league in May. Cork won that game in a close 0-22 to 1-18, expect this game to also go down to the wire.

Predicted Starting 15

Clare

E. Quilligan; R. Hayes, C. Cleary, P. Flanagan; D. Ryan, J. Conlon, P. Fitzpatrick; C. Galvin, C. Malone; A. McCarthy, D. Reidy, R. Taylor; A. Shanagher, T. Kelly, M. Rodgers.

Cork

P. Collins; S. O’Donoghue, D. Cahalane, N. O’Leary; E. Cadogan, M. Coleman, T. O’Mahony; D. Fitzgibbon, G. Millerick; C. Cahalane, S. Harnedy, R. O’Flynn; S. Kingston, P. Horgan, J. O’Connor.

Betting

Cork is the bookmakers’ favourites to win with odds of 5/6.

A draw has odds of 9/1.

Clare are very narrowly underdogs with odds of 6/5 to win.

Score Prediction

Either way this game goes, it is going to be a very close affair. Both teams seem evenly matched in every position.

But Clare have fuelled themselves with confidence after beating Wexford and this may spur them on to victory. Expect them to beat Cork by less than three points.

Cork GAA minor footballers smashed Waterford GAA minor footballers on Wednesday evening in the Electric Ireland Munster GAA Football Minor Championship Quarter Final.

The Rebel County ran out 5-28 to 0-03 winners in an extremely one-sided affair in Dungarvan, a week after their minor hurlers beat Waterford by the same margin.

The Déise have never defeated Cork at minor level and their most recent match-up was clear evidence that the gap between the sides is too big.

Jamie O’Driscoll netted a hat-trick with Darragh O’Brien and Niall Daly scoring goals also.

Three other Cork minor footballers got seven points or above on the night to help the side to a 40-point win.

Adam Murray scored all of Waterford’s points but none of them came from play.

Many people were appalled by the visible gulf between the two sides and took pity on the Waterford minors.

The size of the deficit was a huge shock to many of those who commented on the game.

Some Cork fans congratulated their side on the victory they had achieved on Wednesday night.

However, other fans felt it was unfair to cheer such a result at the behest of minor footballers who had trained hard for the occasion.

Fans took to Twitter to give their thoughts on what should be changed so this may never happen again.

There were people who feared that counties may lose promising footballers as a result of being on the end of such scorelines.

One user ‘@DylanFins11‘ said that something must be done about these “mismatches.”

Some suggested a B championship at minor level so the young players can play other teams at their level.

Cork’s minors will progress to a provincial semi-final where they will play the Kerry GAA minor footballers.

A closer result in that game would be appreciated by the masses.

Cork will face-off against Munster rivals Tipperary in Tullamore at Bord na Mona, O’Connor Park on Tuesday, July 20th at 7:30 pm in the second Munster U20 Hurling Championship semi-final.

After last nights thrilling semi-final between Limerick and Clare, which saw the Buttermilks come out victorious with a 1-27 to 0-17 scoreline at the LIT Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

Tipperary is coming into this match on the back of surviving a late surge against Waterford in their Munster Championship quarter-final with a 3-24 to 2-21, winning by 6 points in a tight affair.

The two teams faced off against one another in last years Munster final, where Cork came out victors, winning by two points with a score of 1-16 to 1-14.

Cork on the other hand last played Dublin on July 10th.

The Rebel County are also reigning All-Ireland U20 Hurling Champions after defeating Dublin in last Saturday’s rescheduled 2020 final, winning by 4 points in an entertaining scoreline of 2-19 to 1-18.

On paper, Cork has the stronger side, with their side sharing many of the scores in their All-Ireland win against Dublin. Six players ranging from Eoin Davis to Daire Connery notched up 3 points each, while Seán Twomey and Pádraig Power each got a goal to send Cork through.

Tipp looks phenomenal going forward, against Waterford, six players each got 3 or more scores each. With Paddy Creedon scoring 1-02, Sean Hayes notching up an impressive 1-01, half-forward Kian O’Kelly getting 4 points (all from play). While substitutes Devon Ryan got 0-05 points and Jack Leamy getting a goal and a point.

Conclusion

Neither team looked like their best in their previous games, Cork let Dublin get back into the tie many times during the tie. Scoring 1-04 in the opening 10 minutes saw Cork in cruise control but Dublin fought back after the start of the second half and gave the team in red some trouble.

Their opponents, Tipperary were poor in the opening half against Waterford, sloppy on the ball and lost possession countless times, leading to a Waterford score. Never looking like they would lose the game, but their game management (along with Cork) needs to improve if either side has any chance of beating Limerick on the 28th of July.

Prediction: Cork by 5 points
