This year’s competition is an invitational event that will see recent competitors return to Annaverna Mountain in what promises to be a highly competitive field. Also, it marks 60 years of All-Ireland Poc Fada competition.

There will be celebrations in honour of the very first Poc Fada which saw six Under 16 boys compete on Annaverna Mountain. The four surviving players and their family members have been invited to the event this year.

The competition will also remember two great Poc Fada loyalists, former champion Oliver Gough (1964) and Lester Ryan who championed the competition at every level and was responsible for so many others driving this unique event.

The unique Gaelic Games contest promises to be a great day of sport. Speaking at the launch Larry McCarthy said:

“I am delighted to see the return of this unique sporting event which embodies the broad cultural and historical significance of our unique game of hurling.

We are honouring that designation by holding an event which sustains and secures a heritage dating back to Cu Chulainn.”

Speaking about this year’s Finals Uachtarán an Cumann Camógaíochta Hilda Breslin said:

“It’s fantastic to see the All-Ireland Poc Fada Finals return this year in what is always an exciting day in the Camogie calendar. I am particularly enthused to see such a star-studded field taking part on what should be a fantastic occasion at the Annaverna Mountain.”

Defending senior hurling champion Cillian Kiely puts his crown on the line against a high calibre field that includes his brother Cathal and players of the calibre of Kilkenny’s Eoin Murphy.

The Kiely’s finished in 1st and 2nd place in 2019 with Cillian finishing with one less poc than his younger sibling, Cathal.

On the Camogie side, champion Caitriona Daly from Galway defends her title against a field that includes recent All-Ireland Intermediate medal winner from Antrim Roisin McCormack.

Abbey Donnelly, from Meath continues a family tradition by following in the footsteps of her father, and grandfather who was a joint winner in 1962. All-Ireland Senior winning goalkeeper Sarah Healy from Galway and Lyndsey Condell from Carlow will also compete.

Unfortunately, due to Covid 19 restrictions that have been in place in the months leading up to the event, there will be no Under 16 competitions this year.

The M. Donnelly GAA All-Ireland Poc Fada Final proceedings will get under way at 12 noon on Annaverna Mountain, in the Cooley Range, Ravensdale, Co. Louth on Saturday, September 25th.

Donegal vs Tyrone Preview & Live Score Commentary

GAA league tables football and hurling

Currently, these two sides are sitting in the middle of Division 1. However, Donegal and Tyrone both have tough round 7 ties against Kerry and Tyrone respectively. As a result, this clash is important for both teams if they wish to be safe from a relegation fight heading into their final game.

The postponement of the League came at a bad time for Tyrone. They had just beaten Dublin in Omagh to bounce back from a trouncing in Galway. Previously, they had wins against Kerry and Meath to overshadow a loss to Monaghan. Four points from their last two games could see Mickey Harte’s team contest the title. But, if results go the opposite way they could easily be leapfrogged and be in relegation trouble.

Meanwhile, Donegal are just a point behind their Ulster rivals. This is courtesy of an earlier draw with Mayo. Wins over Meath and Monaghan came either side of defeats to Galway and Dublin. In a similar way to Tyrone, Donegal could still finish at either end of the table. However, they are more unlikely to go top. Instead, good results from their final two games are important to remain in Division 1. After winning Division 2 to gain promotion in 2019, the 2012 All-Ireland winners will be keen to justify their place among the best.

Championship the Priority

Last weekend, Donegal lost a challenge game to Mayo in Sligo. But, they were without their Kilcar and Naomh Conaill contingent for this game as the sides were scheduled to play the county final. Now, this final is suspended and the likes of Paddy McBrearty and Ryan McHugh will bolster Declan Bonner’s squad.

In Tyrone, all the talk is about Conor McKenna’s return from the AFL. This summer, the 24-year-old announced his return to Ireland after a successful few years with Essendon. If he should link up with the squad, it will provide much needed attacking prowess in Cathal McShane’s absence.

With the Championship fixture between these two the priority, both managers will be cautious of picking up injuries. Therefore, we could see two experimental sides in Ballybofey.

The All-Ireland Champions return to inter-county action on October 17th. Dublin vs Meath will be the only all Leinster tie in Division 1 and is a chance for both teams to get some well-needed match practice before the Championship. 

Dublin vs Meath Live Scores Commentary

Somewhat surprisingly, Dublin are in the middle of Division 1 thus far. However, they have only been beaten once. This was against Tyrone back in February. Two draws against Kerry and Monaghan have left Dessie Farrell’s team two points shy of top spot. 

On the other hand, Meath look destined for relegation. So far, their five games have yielded zero points. In fact, they are probably one team who were grateful for the postponement of the League so they could regroup. 

After coming up from Division 2 last year, the Royal County seem to be heading for the return journey. With Dublin and Monaghan as their remaining two League fixtures, manager Andy McEntee may decide the best option is to just focus on the coming Championship.

Meath face the winners of Wicklow and Wexford on the 8th of November in the Leinster quarter-final. Since McEntee’s side could potentially face Dublin in a Leinster final, he may opt against showing his strongest hand in the League. Instead, this could be an opportunity for new faces to earn a jersey. McEntee will have had a close eye on all the drama that occurred in the Club Championship and has plenty of options available to him.

In the same way, Farrell will likely be more concerned with the rapidly approaching Championship. After taking over from Jim Gavin, he is in the process of moulding his own team and the League is an opportunity for him to implement the changes. Farrell is well aware of the capabilities of Dublin’s major five-in-a-row contributors. Therefore, we may see the likes of Ballymun’s Paddy Small given a chance to break into the fifteen. Furthermore, youngsters such as Conor McHugh, Aaron Byrne and Sean Bugler are continuing to impress.
