Cork GAA have confirmed in a statement that Ronan McCarthy has stepped down as Cork Senior Football manager following recent discussions with board officers.

A meeting between the Cork GAA Executive and Ronan McCarthy on Monday night saw the former decide not to extend McCarthy’s term into the final year of their two-year agreement.

It is understood that McCarthy was interested in staying on next year and also wanted an extension until 2024.

McCarthy was in the role since 2017 and was at the helm in the Rebel County for four seasons.

McCarthy had served as a selector and coach for a total of three years previous to taking the top job in the county.

The Douglas native won Division Three of the Allianz National Football League in 2019 with the side.

Cork went unbeaten on their way back to Division Two but McCarthy failed to take them back to Division One.

Four successive Munster final defeats culminated with a 4-22 to 1-9 thrashing at the hands of rivals Kerry in what was McCarthy’s last game in charge.

On top of this, the side only reached the business end of the All-Ireland championship once under the former inter-county player when they came last in their Super 8s group in 2019.

County Chairperson Marc Sheehan said “Ronan has been an outstanding servant to Cork GAA over many years, and I would like to thank him both personally and on behalf of Cork for all that he has done.

“We wish Ronan, his selectors and backroom team all the best in their future endeavours and thank all involved for an immeasurable contribution over a number of years.”

All in Cork GAA wish to thank Ronan sincerely for his decades of service to GAA at all levels in the county, as player, coach and manager.

A process will now be put in place for the appointment of a new manager.

Cork picked up from where they left off in Division 3 but the battle for second has heated up. Down are the favourites to join the rebels in Division 2 but Derry and Longford are also in with a chance. Round 7 will decide all for these counties.

Division 3

On Saturday morning, it was announced that Leitrim were conceding their game with Down. Due to the Covid-19 situation, a number of players were not available and as a result they could not field a team. Now, Leitrim are staring down the barrel of relegation and hope their situation improves so they can fight to survive against Tipperary. Meanwhile, Down need just a point against bottom of the table Louth to ensure promotion.

Cork resumed their dominance in the Division with a 5-19 vs 0-16 win over Louth. Louth are guaranteed to go down and Cork will win the Division. Next weekend, Cork play Offaly. With nothing on the line, it is likely Ronan McCarthy will rest some of his squad for the Championship tie against Kerry.

Derry joined the promotion fight with a win over Longford. The 2-14 to 0-12 victory draws them level with Longford and leaves both teams within one win of second place. In round 7, Longford host Cork and Derry travel to Offaly. A win for either side will give them a chance of promotion if Down fail to beat Louth.

On Sunday, Conor Sweeney’s first-half goal from a penalty proved to be the decisive score as Tipperary defeated Offaly at Semple Stadium. It finished 1-16 to 0-16 which puts the Munster side one step closer to safety. They are now level with Offaly. Offaly can ensure survival with a point against Derry. Elsewhere, Tipperary play Leitrim which will be a relegation decider for both teams.

Cork 3-13 Tipperary 0-21

Luke Connolly was the Cork hero on Saturday as his side claimed a 3-13 to 0-21 win over Tipperary at Semple Stadium. The win preserves Cork’s unbeaten record in Division 3 of the league.

However it was Tipperary who made a super start to this game. They kicked four points through Steven O’Brien, Sean O’Connor, Emmet Moloney and Colman Kennedy. It took Ronan McCarthy’s men 10 minutes to find a score. That came courtesy of Mattie Taylor to make it 0-05 o 0-01. Cian Kelly got Cork’s second point. However, David Powers charges replied. It was Conor Sweeney and Quigley raising white flags. John O’Rourke pointed for Cork. Moreover, Ruairi Deane found the net and then Cathail O’Mahony pointed to leave it 1-04 to 0-07 after 26 minutes. Tipperary responded excellently though. Additionally, they kicked the next 5 points. However, Cork through O’Rourke and O’Mahony cut the gap to leave it 0-12 to 1-06.

The lead was pushed out to five points after 39 minutes. Liam Boland and Kennedy this time on target. Cork though thundered into the game from there. Luke Connolly registered a goal from the penalty spot after Mattie Taylor was fouled. It was 0-14 to 2-06. Cathail O’Mahony kicked over two points and the gap was down to one. Connolly then scored his second goal to put the Rebels ahead for the first time in the game. Ciaran Sheehan knocked over another point to make 3-10 to 0-16. Conor Sweeney and Brian Fox once again responded for Tipperary, but nonetheless Connolly and Mahony still had Cork leading with 63 minutes played.

Tipperary managed to get the gap down to minimum in the six minute of injury time, but Cork held on for a deserving victory which keeps them top of the table in Division 3. Therefore, firmly keeping the promotion charge back to Division 2 on track.
