Conlan is Wood’s mandatory challenger after his interim title win over TJ Doheny at Falls Park in Belfast last year.

His most recent victory saw him move to 16-0 in his professional career after his controversial exit at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

The WBA had opened up purse bids for the fight on Monday morning with Matchroom and Top Rank seen as the favourites to land it.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn announced their bidding victory on Twitter that evening: “Delighted to win the purse bid for our Champ @itsLeighWood to defend his WBA World title against @mickconlan11 – official announcement coming soon.”

Leigh Wood, who is represented by Matchroom, won the WBA belt in July when he knocked Chinese boxer Can Xu down in the 12th round of their fight at Matchroom HG Garden.

The fight is set to be broadcast on DAZN due to their partnership with Matchroom Boxing and is expected to take place in 2022, possibly on St Patrick’s Day – Wood is currently recovering from an injury.

This bout will be the first World title bout that Conlan has fought at professional level – he has previously fought for and won the WBO inter-continetal featherweight and bantamweight belts as well as the featherweight division’s WBA interim belt, as previously mentioned.

It’s a rematch between the two fighters after they met last year in Madison Square Garden in a controversial fight. Taylor got the win on points but on evidence the fight should have gone to Persoon. In fact, Persoon was quite furious after the fight as she believed she had done enough to win the fight.

Katie Taylor was due to meet Amanda Serrano. But a deal failed to materialise. This led to Matchroom Boxing and Taylor’s promoter, Eddie Hearn seesrching elsewhere for a fight for the Bray woman. The fight will now be apart of the Fight Camp, which is a series of fights behind closed doors in Essex in England.

Taylor speaking to the media about the fight said, “With Amanda Serrano not taking the fight I wanted the biggest fight possible in August and I think a second Persoon fight is one that everyone wants to see”. She continued, “I’ve been looking forward to a rematch ever since the first fight and I’m delighted it’s been made”. Taylor stated the first fight between them was “very close” and felt she done enough to win the fight but she will know doubts this time around.

Belgian boxer Persoon was also looking forward to the rematch. She said, “I am ready to get the victory following the injustice last June in New York, not by words but in the ring – I am ready.”

The fight will be on the same card as Dillian Whyte v Alexander Povetkin. The fight will be also be shown on Sky Sports television.

In truth the fight was always going to happen once Fury beat Deontay Wilder to become the WBC heavyweight World Champion. Anthony Joshua regained his three belts, WBA, IBF and WBA after beating Andy Ruiz in a rematch in December 2019. Eddie Hearn has said a number of obstacles still have to be met but he said both boxers are in agreement in terms of financial returns from the fight. Hearn revealed that the first fight will take place next year.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Mr Hearn said, “We’re making great progress,”. “There is still a lot to overcome. We are looking at venues and dates. It’s fair to say (Joshua and Fury) are in agreement regarding the financial terms of the fight”. He stated that contracts haven’t been signed, due to “things having to be worked out”. However, he revealed that a deal has been forward and “agreed by both parties”.

In addition, Hearn said that its the biggest fight in British boxing history. He went on to say, “It doesn’t get bigger, and there will never be a bigger fight in our generation”. Asked about a venue and where the fight will take place, Hearn remained tight lipped. He said, “From a common-sense point of view and without knowing how a deal works, everyone will say Britain is the place to hold the fight” . “But it is the world heavyweight championship – there will be all sorts of offers from across the world, and there have been already”.
