Here is all the information you will need to know for the Ulster u20 Football semifinal between Down and Fermanagh

Throw in for this match will be at 20:00 on Friday, 16th July in the Athletic Grounds.

Down look to be a very strong side after thrashing a poor Cavan side, scoring 2-17 in the match.

Their goalkeeper has shown his class as well, keeping a clean sheet and coming up the field to score two frees and two 45s.

Fermanagh also had a very comfortable victory over Antrim by nine points. They have shown their class in front of goal, hitting the back of the net twice.

Corner forward Conor Love managed six points from play in the game and will want to get on the score sheet on Friday.

Predicted Starting 15

Down

Smyth (GK); T. Fettes, S. Campbell, P. McCarthy; T. Smyth, P. McMullan, R. Magill; A. Morgan, T. Close; D. Magill, S. Johnston, J. McGovern; A. Gilmore, E. Brown, R. O’Hare.

Fermanagh

Betting

Down 1/10

Draw 14/1

Fermanagh 13/2

Score Prediction

Both sides faced poor teams in the quarter-finals and showed their quality to create scores.

Down seemed to be the more capable and tenacious side and should have the edge over Fermanagh on Friday. Expect Down to take the win in a close tie only separated by a few points.

Fermanagh clash against Monaghan in the Ulster Senior Football quarter-final in Clones at 15:30 on Saturday 3rd July

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE SCORES ON FERMANAGH V MONAGHAN

This is expected to be an entertaining and passionate contest to start off the Ulster Football Championship.

Only 500 fans will be in attendance at this match, but BBC NI will also be showing the game for those of us at home.

Monaghan had a dower football league with the finishing last in the Division 1 North with two draws and no wins. This was at least boosted by not being relegated after narrowly beating Galway in June.

Fermanagh on the other hand had an average league in the Division 3 North finishing second behind Derry. They eventually lost in the semi-finals to Offaly not leaving them in the best place for this Championship.

Monaghan have won four of the last five meetings, with their last game in 2019 the Farney County winning with 1-10 to 1-6.

Jack McCarron is best known for striking the winner against Galway in the play-off semi-final. With this pedestal, he may now have a chance to shine for Monaghan.

Conor Corrigan is a strong midfield presence for Fermanagh. The young teacher caught many viewers’ eyes last year picking up some crucial winning points for his county.

Predicted teams

Monaghan

R Beggan (GK); D Ward, K McMenamin, R Wylie; K Duffy, C Boyle, K O’Connell; N Kearns, K Lavelle; M Bannigan, C McCarthy, R McAnespie; S O’Hanlon, J McCarron, C McManus.

Fermanagh

S McNally (GK); L Flanagan, K Connor, J Cassidy; K McDonnell, T Bogue, A Breen; S McGullion, E Donnelly; C Corrigan, J McMahon, J Largo Ellis; D Leonard, D McGurn (0-03), S Quigley

Betting

Monaghan, as expected, are the bookies’ heavy favorites with odds of 1/10.

A draw would be most unlikely with odds of 14/1.

The outside bet is Fermanagh with odds of 13/2 to win.

Prediction

Do not expect any great surprises in this tie. Monaghan is set as one of the heavy hitters in the Ulster Championship and this will be their warmup for bigger games.

Fermanagh will not give up and will continue to fight till the end but expect a final score-line with Monaghan winning by at least seven points.

It’s Fermanagh vs Down in the Ulster Championship on Sunday. The winner goes on to play Cavan or Antrim the following week while the loser’s season ends. Both of these teams lost at this stage of the competition last year. Now, they’ll be aiming to make amends and capitalise on the absence of Monaghan in their side of the draw.

It hasn’t been plain sailing for Fermanagh since football returned from its extended absence. Ryan McMenamin’s team were hit with Covid-19 before the League resumed. As a result, a weakened side travelled to Clare where they failed to get a result. Then, Laois beat them in the final round to cement their place at the bottom of Division 2.

Last weekend, the break from action allowed McMenamin a chance to take stock. His players will benefit from the chance to recover after a hectic schedule. When they take to the field on Sunday they will relish the opportunity to remind everyone why they can compete in Ulster. Two years ago they made it to the final. Now, a favourable draw will have Fermanagh tails up.

On the other hand, Down were last in the Ulster final in 2017. But, the last two years haven’t seen the same success.

Like Fermanagh, Down’s return to action hasn’t exactly gone to plan. Firstly, they were awarded a walkover when Leitrim conceded there League game. Paddy Tally would have preferred the game in order to dust off cobwebs. However, it proved to be an important two points for Down. The following week they lost to Louth and still managed to earn promotion.

Sunday’s game is sure to be a nervy one as neither team really knows what to expect going in. In addition, a loss ends the season so Fermanagh and Down will both be cautious about leaving themselves open.

Down are 8/13 favourites to win the game with Paddy Power. Otherwise, Fermanagh are 7/4 and a draw is 13/2.

BBC Northern Ireland are broadcasting the game.

Prediction: Down.

Laois cannot afford to slip up again after their failure to get going against Westmeath. Now, they are in the relegation zone. Even a win over Fermanagh may not be enough to save them if Clare get a result against Armagh. Meanwhile, the Ulster men are beyond saving in Division 2. But, after an admirable showing in Clare following uncertainty over squad availability, they will be hopeful of getting a result at home. Fermanagh vs Laois is at 2pm on Saturday.

Fermanagh finished strongly last weekend to make their performance in Clare an encouraging one. In truth, their late goal was more of a consolation than a comeback starter. But, in the first-half they were unlucky to find the net at a stage when they were still in the game.

Ryan McMenamin’s side did not have any collective training session prior to the match due to seventeen squad members being isolated due to Covid-19 protocols. They requested for the game to be postponed but the CCCC refused.

Captain Eoin Donnelly wasn’t shy to voice the frustration he and his squad felt: “Our medical staff were 100%, they checked in with the boys all the time which is probably more than could be said for the GAA themselves. I don’t think we got a lot of support for ourselves.”

Meanwhile, Laois will be hoping their lackluster performance against Westmeath was a result of the seven-month absence. In Mullingar, they never really got started. Ten of their thirteen points came from frees. If they are to secure Division 2 status this year, Laois need to find scores elsewhere in round 7.

Team News

If some Fermanagh players were still feeling the after-effects of Covid-19 last weekend, McMenamin may offer them a week off here. Otherwise, he may deploy his strongest team again to gain some match fitness that would make up for their inability to train recently.

Either way, he will be glad of the week off Fermanagh have before playing Down in the Championship on November 8th.

Likewise, Laois have a week to recover after this fixture. They open their Championship against the winners of Louth and Longford.

Mike Quirke will be ambitious about his side’s Championship chances. However, he won’t pull any punches this weekend with relegation on the mind. Expect a full-strength Laois side to be on show.

Prediction. Laois. They need this one more than Fermanagh do. Furthermore, the Fermanagh lads will still be sluggish after the toll that the Covid outbreak took on their squad.

The Division 2 fixture of Clare vs Fermanagh has been thrown into doubt after an outbreak of Covid-19 in the Ulster county. Last Wednesday, Fermanagh GAA announced the suspension of all GAA activity within the county at both club and county level. As a result, Stephen McMenamin’s side could have little or no preparation before the Championship begins.

Several members of Fermanagh’s team tested positive for the coronavirus. As a result, the squad is stretched ahead of the return to inter-county action. McMenamin has called for the game against Clare to be postponed due to the lack of preparation his team will have.

“We’re in no shape to play… even long-term if you look at the Ulster Championship, we do want to play it but you’re looking at the level of preparation.”

The former Tyrone defender added that his side should be afforded the chance to enter their League fixtures on a level-playing field. More importantly, with relegation a serious threat for Fermanagh they need to be playing at full capacity.

“It’s not a fair playing field. You kind of ask yourself should there be relegation in the league, if we’re not afforded the same chances as Clare?”

Division 2 Dogfight

Currently, Fermanagh sit bottom of Division 2. Therefore, they likely need at least a win and a draw in their remaining two fixtures to have any chance of survival. Their only win to date was a one-point victory against Roscommon.

In a similar way, Clare are flirting with relegation and need a strong finish to the League. As it stands, they are safe but only thanks to their points difference. A win over Fermanagh would allow them some breathing room ahead of their round 7 game with Armagh. Wins over Kildare and Cavan earlier in the year could stand to them in the end.

Clare open their Championship campaign away to Tipperary in the Munster quarter-final. This game is just a week following the League’s conclusion. Hence, the Banner men have no time to ease themselves in.

Meanwhile, Fermanagh are scheduled to face Down in the Ulster quarter-final on November 8th. The fixture is subject to change though in light of the situation among McMenamin’s team. If their League games are postponed they will have little match practice before then. However, if they play their remaining games with a weakened squad to fulfill the fixtures, the manager may not have an honest look at his squad prior to the Championship.

Fermanagh’s upcoming clash with Clare has been cast into further doubt due to 10 Fermanagh players testing positive for Covid-19. In total, 17 players have now been affected, as a further 7 are self-isolating. This news follows the postponement of all GAA activities in Fermanagh by the county board last Wednesday. The game is scheduled to be played in Cusack park, Ennis at 1pm on Sunday 18th October.

This is set to be a crucial game in the battle for survival in Division 2, as Fermanagh sit bottom of the table and Clare currently reside in 6th. However, so far it has been hugely overshadowed by this issue.

Fermanagh boss Ryan McMenamin confirmed this development on RTE’s Sunday Sport programme, as he struggles to get a team together in time for Sunday’s match-up. Several players are set to finish their isolation period a day before the game.

“There is a lot forgotten about in this pandemic that these lads have actually contracted something”, McMenamin said. “People probably think, ‘ah well, you’ll have the 10 boys back.’ But I can’t expect 10 players to just come back in and play a league game. According to McMenamin his affected players are “totally wrecked”.

Competitive Fairness or fulfilment of fixtures at all cost?

The issue here is that it would be unfair to expect players to play a day after an isolation period. Players may have had Covid symptoms and obviously could not train with the group. In the interest of player welfare, it may not be a fair option to play this game on Sunday. However, in a year of uncertainty competitive fairness cannot always be achieved if the GAA is to see out its fixture schedule for 2020. Tough decisions are going to have to be made. It will either result in a disadvantage to Fermanagh with a make-shift squad on Sunday or postponing the fixture which will have a knock on-effect to both of these teams (and probably others) down the line.

Fermanagh are between a rock and a hard place at the moment, even before we consider that they are bottom of the division on two points. The Erne men deserve a fair chance to stay up, but the GAA will be looking to avoid fixtures chaos before games even get started next weekend. Hopefully a forfeiture of the fixture by Fermanagh will be last resort as it would result in relegation. It will be interesting to see how this situation develops in the coming days.

Derrygonnelly Harps remain on course for their sixth New York Cup in a row. Now, Ederney St. Joseph’s will attempt to stop them. The 2020 Fermanagh SFC Final takes place at 6pm on Sunday the 27th of September.

CLICK here for live scores from Fermanagh football final

This fixture is a replay of the 2018 final. On that occasion, Derrygonnely won by 2-16 to 0-10. Ederney have not won a final since 1968. Previously, they also lost the 2006 final. However, a strong campaign so far will have them hopeful of ending their drought.

Firstly, they defeated Belnaleck in the quarter-final. A 1-11 to 2-2 scoreline was a great marker to lay down in the Championship opener. In the semi-final, they had six-points to spare in their win over Teemore. It finished 2-16 to 3-07. On the whole, conceding just fourteen scores over two games is a statistic that will buoy them going into this test.

On the other hand, Derrygonnelly began their title defence with a 0-10 to 0-06 against Roslea Shamrocks. This was a repeat of the 2019 final with the same outcome. In a physical game, the holders had too much for Roslea in the end. After that, they marched into the final with a 2-7 to 1-02 victory over 2019’s Kinawley. Kinawley won the 2019 Intermediate Championship and carried their form into 2020. In addition, they actually beat Derrygonnelly earlier in the league. But, Derrygonnelly’s Championship experience proved to be a valuable asset in the semi-final.

Derrygonnelly are hot favourites to retain their title. Paddy Power currently have them at 1/4. In contrast, Ederney are 7/2. A draw is an optimistic bet at 9/1.

Fans will be expecting Derrygonnelly to add to their 8 Championships. But, if Ederney’s defence remains solid and they take their chances, they could push the Champions all the way.

Fermanagh GAA TV are broadcasting the game from Brewster Park.

Fermanagh will meet Roscommon on Sunday at 2pm in Brewster Park, Enniskillen. We have a preview, team news and betting ahead of the game. We will also be providing updates of the game.

Preview

Fermanagh played Kildare in their first round meeting at Newbridge. Fermanagh lost out in that game 2-12 to 0-14. They will certainly be looking for a win here or they could find themselves in trouble even at this early stage. Fermanagh will likely look to Conall Jones, Darren McGurn and Ryan Jones.

Roscommon come into the game on the back of a 2-14 to 2-14 draw against Laois. The Rossies threw the game away in truth as they were six points up going into injury time,

Laois scored two goals in the final few minutes of the game to grab a draw. Anthony Cunningham will be rather disappointed that his side didn’t win. However, Enda Smith and Donie Smith both impressed in the game.

Team News

Teams have yet to be announced but here are the sides from last weekend Allianz League games

Roscommon – C Lavin; D Murray, B Stack, G Patterson; P Scott, N Daly  R Hughes; T O’Rourke, S Killoran ; N Kilroy , E Smith , F Cregg; D Smith , C McKeon , C Cregg .

Fermanagh: James McGrath; Johnny Cassidy, Che Cullen, Kevin McDonnell, Declan McCusker, Richard O’Callaghan, Shane McGullion, Eoin Donnelly, Ryan Jones , Aidan Breen, Ultan Kelm , Ciaran Corrigan, Stephen McGullion, Conall Jones , Darragh McGurn

Betting

Roscommon are 4/7 favourites to win this game. In contrast, Fermanagh managed by Ryan McMenamin are 15/8. I expect this game to go right down to the wire but Roscommon for me should win by 2 or 3 points.
