Galway GAA will face a tough challenge against Mayo in Castlebar on Saturday night, as they will be missing at least three key players from last year’s All-Ireland final.

Kieran Molloy of Corofin, who is recovering from a knee injury, Finnian O Laoi of An Spideal, who has relocated to Australia, and All Star corner-back Liam Silke, who has been working as a doctor in New Zealand, will be unable to play.

“It looks like Liam Silke is going to be (staying) in New Zealand for the year, so we won’t be having him, which is a big loss to us,” Tribe boss Padraic Joyce is widely reported to say

Mayo lost a few players, but I believe Liam Silke and Kieran Molloy are a bigger loss for us.

I don’t think people realise how important Molloy was to us last year.

He can play anywhere and is a huge loss for us.

To be fair to Kieran, he is working extremely hard.

Knowing him, he’ll probably defy logic and return sooner than expected.”

In addition, two more players who participated in the loss to Kerry last year have been added.

Cillian McDaid, All Star midfielder, and reigning Young Footballer of the Year Jack Glynn are also doubts for the game.

McDaid’s fitness is rated as ’50-50,’ while Glynn has been dealing with a groyne issue that has kept him out of Sigerson Cup action with UL.

Mayo will be without Lee Keegan and AFL player Oisin Mullin as Kevin McStay takes charge for the first time in the league.

Both teams will face difficulties, but it promises to be an exciting match to begin the league season.

Next Galway Hurling Manager Candidates

After a disappointing 2021 championship season where the Tribesmen saw themselves underperform in Leinster, being knocked out by Dublin before exiting the championship by the hands of Waterford in round 2 of the Qualifiers.

This has led Shane O’Neill to leave his post as the Galway senior hurling manager after announcing that he would not be seeking an extension to his term as Galway manager and would leave the position after his appointment in November 2019.

Now, Galway GAA has started to begin the interview process to find their new manager and his backroom staff.

Here at SportsNewsIreland, we have decided to take a look at the potential candidates that could possibly take over from Shane O’Neill going forward.

The Contenders

Davy Fitzgerald

The former Clare and Wexford manager is the nailed on favourite to land the Galway job after leaving his post in Wexford in July after elimination in the preliminary round of the Qualifiers to former team Clare.

As a player for club and county, Fitzgerald won the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship in 1996, two Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship titles in 1995, 2000 and six Clare Senior Hurling Championship from 1989, to 2002 with Sixmilebridge

For Clare, he won two All-Irelands in 1995 and 1997. numerous Munster titles, one National League title and a Munster Minor title in 1989.

He has a proven pedigree in inter-county management, winning a Munster Senior championship with Waterford in 2010, a Leinster Senior championship with Wexford in 2019.

His most successful era was with The Clare senior team winning League and Munster titles before picking up his first and only All-Ireland senior title in 2013, defeating Cork in an all-time classic.

He also went on to pick up the RTÉ Sports Manager of the Year award in 2013.

Anthony Daly

The Clare native is an outside favourite to take over as Galway manager after his last stint in inter-county management when he took charge of the Dublin senior hurling team back in 2008.

He left his post in September 2014, after nearly six years in charge where he won the Division 1 National Hurling League title in 2011 and the Leinster championship back in 2013.

He was appointed manager of Dublin club side Kilmacud Crokes in November 2018 and stayed on until 2019.

Jeff Lynskey

As a player, Lynskey won the All-Ireland Minor Championship in 1994, but it was his managerial stint as the Galway minor manager that gave him the recognition.

He won three All-Ireland titles in 2015, 2017 and 2018 before stepping down. He recently stepped down as the  Galway U20 manager after Galway’s defeat to eventual champions Cork.

While not being as successful at the U20 level but he has proven to be a successful commodity in the Galway hurling scene.

Brian Hanley

The 3-time All-Ireland winning player is the current Galway minor manager after replacing the successful Jeffrey Lynskey back in 2019.

However, the former Westmeath manager has been touted as the next Galway U20 manager before taking the senior job in the future.

Micheál Donoghue

The former Galway manager led them to their first All-Ireland title in 29 years back in 2017 after beating Waterford.

After being ratified for a further two years in the role in November 2018, Donoghue stepped down a year later in August 2019.

His last tenure led to constant rumours of the county board and Donoghue butting heads that led to high levels of tension, leading to his departure.

Donoghue has been touted as the favourite to replace O’Neill but with a fractured relationship with Galway officials, it is unlikely he will move forward in his return.

Shane O’Neill has stepped down from his role as manager of the Galway senior hurling team, Galway GAA have announced.

O’Neill decided against extending his time in charge and leaves the inter-county side after two years in the role.

The 47-year-old won Division One of the Allianz National Hurling League this year after his side finished top of Group A – they shared the title with Group B winners Kilkenny.

However, provincial and All-Ireland success eluded Galway under the former Limerick hurler.

His side finished runners-up in Leinster last year and fell to eventual champions Limerick in a three-point loss at the All-Ireland semi-final stage at the end of 2020.

Galway regressed this year and failed to reach the Leinster final after a shock loss to Mattie Kenny’s Dublin.

The side were beaten by eventual semi-finalists Waterford in their only All-Ireland qualifier in July in a match where they avoided a humiliating scoreline and almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

In a statement, O’Neill said: “I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the Galway County Board and the Hurling Committee for their unwavering support throughout my tenure,” O’Neill said in a statement released by Galway GAA.

“I am extremely grateful to them for their most professional and proactive approach to all matters related to the Galway Senior Hurling Team.

“I wish to acknowledge and commend the efforts of each and every one of the members of the backroom team. You are too numerous to mention but I must especially thank our management team of John Fitzgerald, Lukasz Kirszenstein, Fergal Healy, David Forde and Colm Callanan.

“I would like to thank the players for their hard work and dedication. It was a special privilege to be involved with some of the greats of the game.

“I wish them every success in the future.”

Galway GAA would like to thank O’Neill and his entire backroom team for their efforts over the past two seasons and has cited their commitment, dedication and professionalism as “exemplary.”

Galway hurler Joe Canning announced his retirement from inter-county hurling on Wednesday morning.

The 32-year-old retires as the All-Ireland Championship’s top scorer after breaking Henry Shefflin’s record in the loss against Waterford at the weekend.

Canning broke the record of 27-484 (565) and sits on 27-485 (566) as he steps away from Galway GAA following a 0-9 performance.

The Portumna man helped Galway to three Leinster Championships throughout his career, as well as one All-Ireland title in 2017.

The inter-county veteran also leaves the top level having garnered five All-Stars over the course of his thirteen-year career with his county.

Injuries have hampered the forward in recent years and, after three surgeries in five years, Canning feels he can no longer go on for Galway.

The Galway star told media of his decision to retire this morning at a Bord Gais Energy media event.

“It’s injuries and stuff like that,” Canning said at the event.

“I had a couple of fairly serious ones over the year and even this year alone I tore a hamstring after the Waterford league game and didn’t realise I had it for a few weeks.

“Just a little nick, I’d a partial tear in my thumb as well. My finger, my heel, yeah there are four or five injuries alone this year, niggly ones, so yeah it wasn’t getting any easier for me.

“I just feel the time is right. I don’t want to stay around too long either.

“I think that is a bad way as well, just being there for the sake of it.

“As I said to the lads after the game, Saturday wasn’t the day I was planning to tell them.

“That’s just it, life moves on.”

“I thought it [retirement] might be later on in the year,” he said.

“You were kind of hoping in August time, August 22, All-Ireland that’s your kind of dream isn’t it, but that’s life. As I said, life moves on, that’s just the way it is.

“I am content with it. It wasn’t a thing just because we lost, that’s it. As I said to the boys I wanted to say it then because we will never be in that group again.”

The Portumna star departs the stage as one of the best-ever players to play the game and will be remembered on the level of the likes of Henry Shefflin.

Mayo has completed back-to-back Connacht titles since 2012, beating Galway at Croke Park after a second-half blitz saw them lift a rare honour in the capital.

Capturing their 48th SFC Connacht title, moving two ahead of Galway in the process.

The game itself showcased both teams at their best and their worst. Mayo looked lethargic throughout the first half, while Galway produced some cunning, quick and clinical football that saw them lead 2-05 (11) to 0-06 (6) points at the interval.

Like many times before in Croke Park, Mayo was blitzed with two goals, after conceding from Shane Walsh and Damien Comer, giving them a five-point lead.

James Horan’s side looked in trouble as the players walked off the pitch into the tunnel, where a mass brawl between Mayo captain Aidan O’Shea and numerous Galway players give the second half even more excitement.

A monumental change of events occurred after the break, with Mayo storming out, outscoring Galway by 1-03 to 0-00 in the third quarter, defending ferociously to keep the Tribesmen without a score from play in the entire second half – only popping up a free in the 61st minute.

Mayo’s forward line was difficult to deal with throughout the game, Ryan O’Donoghue ran the Galway backline ragged – striking the ball into the back off the net from the penalty spot, which got the comeback underway.

There were huge team performances from Padraig O’Hora and Conor Loftus, who both got sustained heavy knocks in the second half. O’Hora had to be stretchered off after two sublime turnovers that turned into scores.

Man of the Match Matthew Ruane was influential in his performance, topping off his role with a great solo run, which saw him run through the heart of the Galway team before cooly slotting the ball past Conor Gleeson in the Galway goal.

Captain Aidan O’Shea helped out in a big way, tracking back constantly – starting the game in midfield before being deployed in the full-forward line.

Getting on the end of some long balls – catching the ball to set up the penalty and creating many of his team’s scores in the second half.

After the water break, Galway will deem themselves unlucky after a dropping ball saw Damien Comer get a flick onto the crossbar before Mayo could clear their lines.

O’Donoghue also had a second goal controversially ruled out for a foul in the buildup.

Substitute James Carr could have finished the game off in fashion – when an open space in the middle of the Galway goal saw him go one on one with Gleeson, popping the ball over the bar.

All in all, Mayo have a lot to work on if they want to compete with Dublin and Kery, although, based on their second-half performance, they can be an issue for any team.

Ripping Galway to bits with their movement and their overall ferocity – particularly in attack.

Galway’s brave performance ultimately lacked the cutting edge in the final quarter and was outrun by an immense Mayo steam train.

In the All-Ireland semi-finals, the men from the West will be back in Croke Park in three weeks to face the Leinster champions, Dublin or Kildare.

Click here for live scores on Galway v Mayo

Mayo will go head to head with Galway at Croke Park in Dublin this coming Sunday at 1.30 pm in the Connacht Senior Football Championship Final live on RTÉ.

In their last outing, Mayo thrashed Leitrim in the semi-finals of the Connacht championship. Winning by 5-20 (35) to 0-11 (11) in a 24-point winning margin at MacHale Park in Castlebar.

Now, the Connacht Senior Football Championship Final – Mayo v Galway will be live on RTÉ 2 as part of a double header.

Throughout their league campaign, Mayo has been on tip-top form, after their shock relegation. They have bounced back to Division 1 in style.

Since their promotion, James Horan’s side has steamrolled through their provincial rivals, stomping Sligo by 20 points in the quarter-final and them Leitrim in the semi’s.

They now face a rejuvenated Galway side, who are coming into this game on a high after toppling Roscommon at Dr Hyde Park with a score of 0-12 (12) to 2-11 (17) to book their place in Sunday’s final.

This will be Galway’s fourth consecutive Connacht final, winning only one title in those final appearances.

Their opponents, Mayo, will compete in their first back-to-back Connacht finals after completing a historic five-in-a-row from 2011 to 2015. Four of which were under James Horan’s management.

Both counties are the dominant force in their province, with a combined total of 93 titles between the two rivals, with Mayo winning one more title (47) to Galway’s (46) to make them Connacht’s most successful team.

This final will be a repeat of last years Connacht decider where Mayo prevailed to reclaim their first title since 2015, in a 0-14 to 0-13 victory at Pearse Stadium in Galway.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Looking at both team’s, they do possess a lot of advantages and disadvantages coming into this game.

Many questions have been asked of Mayo’s firepower going forward without their talisman Cillian O’Connor after the Ballintubber man suffered an Achilles injury against Clare. Since then Mayo has scored a combined total of 8-43 (67 points) in their past two games.

Now, this is more than likely down to the poor level of quality faced, but with Tommy Conroy and Ryan O’Donoghue improving game by game, and with the addition of Aidan O’Shea in the full-forward line, he has shown in the past that he can cause damage if given the proper service.

The Tribesmen on the other hand lack that winning mentality, even if they do beat Mayo on Sunday, come to the big games in the All-Ireland they often fail to impress. Only reaching the semi-final of the All-Ireland once (2018) since their last All-Ireland victory back in 2001.

Conclusion

On any given day, Galway can beat Mayo, especially this Mayo side who are still in a transitional phase.

Mayo will be more than confident in getting one over their rivals for the second year in a row and with their forward line looking sharp if Galway does overcome this Mayo side, they will be darkhorse’s for the remainder of the championship season.

All in all, I see James Horan’s side coming out winners in this one. Looking sharper in their past two games, and seemingly wanting to prove they can compete in O’Connor’s absence, claiming a 48th Connacht title will set up a mouth-watering tie against Dublin.

Prediction: Mayo by 5 points

Waterford reached this point after losing to a Tony Kelly inspired Clare, they since narrowly knocked out Laois in round one to put them back on form.

Other the other side of the coin, Galway found themselves in the qualifiers after being stunned in a four-point defeat to Dublin.

This match could prove to be a battle between two current county legends, Austin Gleeson and Joe Canning. It will be interesting to see who has the greater attacking threat for their side and who can be nullified.

These two last faced each other in the Hurling League in early June. Galway won the tie scoring 4-28 to Waterford’s 3-23; let’s hope this game is just as exciting.

Starting 15

Betting

Galway are the bookies’ favourites with odds of 4/9.

A draw has odds of 10/1.

Waterford are still given a good chance by the bookmakers with odds of 2/1 to win.

Predicted Score

After their shock in the Leinster championship, expect Galway to come out and prove a point. They won’t be as lazy and lack lustre, they will want to win.

This still young Waterford side has shown their quality but it will be hard to see them dealing with the Tribesmen firing on all cylinders.

Expect to see Galway having the cutting edge to win this game by three or more scores.

Leinster U20 Hurling Championship semi-final – Kilkenny v Galway – 7:30 pm – TG4

Kilkenny will go head-to-head against Galway in Tullamore at Bord na Mona, O’Connor Park on Tuesday, July 20th at 7:30 pm in the second Leinster U20 Hurling Championship semi-final as the deferred game live through the TG4 app.

Coming into this game Kilkenny has looked indifferent in their quarter-final win over Laois on the 13th of July, only winning by 3 points with a score of 1-18 to 1-15.

In the first half of that tie, Laois were the team in control, pushing Kilkenny back with a solid running game which saw them lead by a point at the break, with the score in the balance with a 0-11 to 1-07.

However, by the 50th minute, the Cats took control, scoring 0-05 without reply in the space of five minutes to put a marginal distance between the two teams.

Galway will hope they can redeem themselves after losing to Dublin in the rescheduled 2020 Leinster final after losing by 2 points with a score of 1-20 to 1-18 back in June.

Playing well until Dublin took over and just pipped them to the victory, The Tribesmen will be more than motivated to avenge their last defeat and book their place in the Leinster final against either Dublin or Offaly.

Conclusion

As always, the black and orange outfit (Kilkenny) look sharp and stunning in their attack, with full-forward Eoin Guilfoyle a standout. Scoring 0-08 points against Laois, he was the difference that ultimately saw them prevail.

Another player to look out for centre-half forward Conor Kelly, boasting great movement and anticipation, the forward scored the crucial goal to help them reach the semi-final.

Their opponents, Galway will be without scorer Mark Kennedy after his brilliant performance against Dublin, notching a respectable 0-06 from play.

They will have full-forward Donal O’Shea, who scored 0-08 against The Dubs. He could be the difference-maker in this game if it’s a tight affair coming into injury time.

Prediction: Galway by 3 points

Round Two of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Qualifiers will see Clare take on Cork and Waterford play Galway on Saturday, July 24th.

Following the hurling action at the weekend, the draw was made, which saw Kilkenny and Limerick win the Leinster and Munster provincial titles respectively.

All sides involved in the draw were knocked out of their provincial championships at the quarter-final and semi-final stages.

The draw took place on RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland.

Two of the sides were in action at the weekend in the first round of the qualifiers, with Cork and Galway starting their journey through the backdoor in round two after losses to eventual Munster champions Limerick and Dublin – the pair were awarded a bye for round one.

Brian Lohan’s Clare progressed to the second round after beating Wexford in a match-up against rival Bainisteoir Davy Fitzgerald at Semple Stadium.

Clare’s squad showed their worth and the Banner had another game in recent history that did not showcase an overreliance on the Championship’s top scorer Tony Kelly.

Cathal Malone, David Reidy, Ryan Taylor and Aidan McCarthy all chipped in with scores throughout the game and Clare’s bench also provided 1-02 for the side.

They will face a Cork side who have been inconsistent in 2021, and with five wins from their last six games, Brian Lohan’s men will be confident of progression.

Waterford earned a date with Galway and a repeat of the 2017 All-Ireland final after a five-point win over preliminary round winners Laois.

Waterford’s fortunes have been up-and-down this season with Liam Cahill and his players struggling to get the side back into the vein of form that saw them reach the All-Ireland final last year.

Galway will play their first game after a shock loss to Mattie Kenny’s Dublin hurlers and will want to bounce back from their defeat.

The Déise will have to be on their A-game to earn a date in the All-Ireland quarter-finals with either Dublin or Tipperary.
