Will Keane, who earned his first senior international call-up for the October international window, has not been selected – neither has Celtic’s Liam Scales.

Caoimhin Kelleher has been selected ahead of his first start for Ireland in front of a sell-out crowd of 25,000 Irish fans, including his family.

All players that made an appearance against Azerbaijan in Ireland’s first competitive win under Stephen Kenny, excluding Cullen, are named in the squad.

Harry Arter, Enda Stevens and James Collins are also among those included in the squad for the match.

The Republic of Ireland will wear a special edition 100th anniversary kit for their international friendly against Qatar on Tuesday night.

Ireland will wear the shirt to mark the centenary of the creation of the Football Association of Ireland, the governing body of the sport in the country.

The FAI was founded in September 1921 by the Free State League (now League of Ireland) and the Leinster FA, which had withdrawn from the Irish Football Association (IFA) in June of that year.

Umbro revealed the limited edition jersey back in August – it is a blue home jersey that contains a simple design with a retro shamrock crest and discreet blue-on-blue Umbro logo.

The colour of the shirt, described as ‘St Patrick’s Blue’ is a nod to the colour of the very first Republic of Ireland kit, which was the same colour.

The goalkeeper jersey, which will be worn by Liverpool number two Caoimhin Kelleher, is a yellow version of the shirt.

The year ‘1921’ is embroidered onto the back of the shirt underneath the grandad collar to mark the centenary.

The match details have been embroidered underneath the shamrock crest and read ‘v Qatar 12/10/21’.

It’s been 5 months since Ireland’s last competitive fixture, a disappointing loss on penalties to Slovakia which resulted in elimination from the 2021 European Championships.

Tomorrow, Ireland begin their World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign as they travel to Belgrade in order to face Serbia.

Ireland go into the game with a seriously weakened squad as several players have been forced out of action due to injury. Conor Hourihane, Darren Randolph and John Egan to name a few.

Nevertheless, a positive result will be expected in order to kickstart a potentially fruitful qualifying campaign.

Below is the team we feel is best equipped to achieve that result.

GOALKEEPER

Mark Travers (Bourenemouth)

An inexperienced goalkeeper must be relied on for the upcoming round of games given Darren Randolph’s injury and Kieren Westwood’s unavailability. Caoimhin Kelleher was also ruled out, meaning he won’t get his international debut for another few months, at least.

Mark Travers already has 2 international caps to his name and will, in all likelihood, start against Serbia. However, Gavin Bazunu’s form and game time this season is hard to ignore.

Bazunu has started far more league games this season than Travers. He also recently picked up Rochdale Supporters’ Player of the Month for February.

Ireland boss Stephen Kenny has essentially confirmed Mark Travers’ involvement in Wednesday’s game, though. He mentioned during a Q&A last week that Travers would be next in line if Kelleher wasn’t fit to start.

Travers returned to Bournemouth from a brief but impressive loan spell at Swindon Town last month. Since returning, he’s had to settle for the bench as an emergency backup.

The other goalkeeping option in the squad is Burton Albion ‘keeper Kieran O’Hara. However, he’s likely third choice given he hasn’t started a league game since January.

RIGHT BACK

Séamus Coleman (Everton)

Everton and Ireland captain Séamus Coleman would be most people’s choice for starting right back and it appears Stephen Kenny is a big fan of the Donegal man, as well.

“I can’t give away the team but I will say that Séamus is very important for us,” said the Ireland manager in a press conference earlier today.

The 32-year-old has enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance this season, putting in several good performances and captaining his side to one of their best seasons in years (as it stands).

The other realistic option for right back is Matt Doherty, however his poor form and sporadic game time this season won’t help his cause. He may, however, start at left back or centre back as he has done in previous Ireland games under Stephen Kenny.

LEFT BACK

Enda Stevens (Sheffield United)

Enda Stevens has been the undisputed Irish national team left back for a couple of years now, but his performances this season have been of an unusually low standard.

That said, though, he should still maintain his position in the Ireland setup.

Swansea City’s midfielder turned defender Ryan Manning is the other option for this position.

Initially, Manning struggled for game time this season. However, he’s started several games in the last number of weeks which may improve his chance of receiving a start tomorrow.

CENTRE BACKS

Ciaran Clark (Newcastle United) & Dara O’Shea (West Bromwich Albion)

Perhaps the most obvious option to start at centre back is Ciaran Clark. The Newcastle United man has enjoyed a good spell in his club’s side recently and is one of Ireland’s more experienced campaigners having accumulated 34 caps since 2011.

The next centre back position is a toss up between Dara O’Shea and Shane Duffy.

The latter has been one of Ireland most reliable servants over the years, however his decline over the last year is very hard to ignore. Duffy joined Celtic on loan at the beginning of the 2020/21 season and to say he’s been a disappointment would be an understatement.

Celtic had high hopes for the Derry man but his performances has been well below his usual standards. His recent performances for Ireland have also been shakier than usual.

O’Shea, on the other hand, has had a solid debut Premier League campaign for West Brom despite their poor league form. He’s also started a majority of their games this season despite their switch of managers half way through the season, showing how much he’s rated at the club.

For that reason, we think O’Shea should start ahead of Duffy tomorrow.

HOLDING MIDFIELD

Josh Cullen (RSC Anderlecht)

James McCarthy’s absence from the squad means Josh Cullen should be a guaranteed starter against Serbia.

The former West Ham midfielder has established himself as a key player for Anderlecht whom he joined at the beginning of the 2020/21 season.

Current West Ham footballer Conor Coventry, who will know Cullen very well from his time at the club, can also play the position but is very unlikely to start given he was only called up a couple of days ago and has never made a senior appearance for his country before.

Jayson Molumby is another option, however his lack of game time this season may rule him out of contention.

CENTRE MIDFIELD

Jason Knight (Derby County)

There’s no doubt about it, Jason Knight must start tomorrow. His energy, work rate and all-roundedness could be just what Ireland need to counter Serbia’s effectiveness.

While Derby have not exactly set the world alight this season, Knight has been a revelation in their midfield.

The 20-year-old has played the most minutes out of any Derby County player showing just how valued he is by the club’s staff.

He was linked with a number of Premier League clubs in January, however Wayne Rooney was not willing to forfeit his talents: “I know which players I want to keep here, and who I would like to bring in to this football club. I’m trying to build a team that I feel can challenge in this league. I’ve seen the reports on the younger players leaving. The ones who I want to keep, will stay.”

In terms of the talent coming out of Ireland at the moment, Knight might just be the cream of the crop.

ADVANCED MIDFIELD

Alan Browne (Preston North End)

Jeff Hendrick has been a shoo-in for every Irish XI over the past few years, despite his increasingly underwhelming performances.

Alan Browne, on the other hand, has only accumulated 11 Ireland caps despite becoming one of the Championship’s most established players over a number of years.

His performances for Ireland have also been energy-filled and eventful, despite not always having his run of luck.

That said, we believe Browne should start ahead of Hendrick for the upcoming games. His late runs into the box is something that Hendrick simply doesn’t offer, and that may prove crucial in the final third.

RIGHT WING

Callum Robinson (West Bromwich Albion)

Another West Bromwich Albion footballer who also happens to be an Ireland international, Callum Robinson has also appeared in the majority of his club’s games this season, albeit mainly from the bench in recent weeks.

Still though, Robinson is one of Ireland’s best attacking players on his day, as he demonstrated by scoring a brace against Chelsea earlier in the season.

With just one goal for Ireland in his fifteen caps so far, tomorrow wouldn’t be a bad day to add to his tally.

Daryl Horgan is another option that Stephen Kenny may consider, having used the Wycombe Wanderers winger in previous fixtures.

LEFT WING

Robbie Brady (Burnley)

Aaron Connolly and James McClean are both doubts for tomorrow’s fixture so Robbie Brady is in with a good chance of starting on the left wing, as he has many times in the past for Ireland.

His set piece ability could be crucial if Ireland are to secure a positive result, particularly given the absence of Conor Hourihane.

Brady has played a healthy amount of games for Burnley this season, also, meaning his match fitness should be up to par.

Ronan Curtis is another option.

However, Brady’s experience, set piece ability and the level he’s playing at should get him over the line.

STRIKER

James Collins (Luton Town)

Other than Adam Idah, Irish strikers remained generally unscathed leading up to the international break.

Unfortunately, though, very few of those are in form for their clubs.

James Collins is perhaps the most in-form, in terms of goals at least. The Luton striker has scored 7 Championship goals so far this season, he has however had more prolific campaigns in the past.

Troy Parrott is another one who’s played several games this season but his attacking output has been lacking with just a solitary league goal this season. Stephen Kenny has said himself that Parrott is unlikely to start.

Shane Long is another option for Kenny to think about. He has had very little game time this season, though.

Realistically, it’s between Long and Collins for the starting striker spot. However, we think Collins might just edge it.

Given the day that’s in it, we’ve decided to compile a list of the best Irish performers across the footballing world this season.

Season is, of course, a broad term so we’re limiting inclusions on the list to those of which who began their campaigns in Autumn last year. That means the likes of Jack Byrne and Aaron McEneff will miss out despite their impressive form.

Although the season is far from over yet, there’s been a significant enough portion played to determine players deserving of inclusion.

With that said, here’s an XI of the best Irish footballers this season.

GOALKEEPER

Gavin Bazunu – Rochdale (on loan from Manchester City)

The first inclusion on the list made for a fairly easy decision, all things considered. Caoimhin Kelleher is another who has had a fine season, however limited game time made it hard to pick the Corkman.

Despite being just 19 years of age, Gavin Bazunu has been well known to Irish football fans for a couple of years now. His penalty save against Cork City’s Kieran Sadlier as a 16-year-old firmly established himself as one of the brightest prospects in the country.

Almost 3 years on from that moment and he’s flourishing in his first full season of professional football.

Bazunu has started almost every game for Rochdale, making some magnificent saves in the process.

Just recently, he was awarded Rochdale Supporters’ Player of the Month for February as a token of appreciation for his fine form over the past month or so.

Given he’s one of the only Irish goalkeepers starting regularly at the moment, could Bazunu have an outside chance of starting against Serbia?

RIGHT BACK

Séamus Coleman – Everton

Although he’s been in and out of the Everton team at times this season, Coleman has shown he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

Carlo Ancelotti is clearly an admirer, speaking about the Donegal man, he said: “I don’t want to forget anyone but he is up there as a captain with Maldini, John Terry and Sergio Ramos.”

High praise from one of the most decorated managers in Europe.

Barring yet another unfortunate injury, Coleman should be a shoo-in for the right back spot against Serbia.

Honourable mentions: Cyrus Christie (Nottingham Forest), Danny McNamara (Millwall).

LEFT BACK

Enda Stevens – Sheffield United

Realistically, there wasn’t many options to choose from in the left back position.

Ryan Manning’s severe lack of game time – particularly earlier in the season – excluded him from the XI and there really isn’t an in form Irish left backs regularly starting at any level.

So, by default, Enda Stevens takes the left back spot.

Stevens had an excellent 2019-20 season but has failed to replicate that form this term. Although he’s not solely to blame, he is a regular starter in the 2^nd worst defence in the Premier League.

His attacking output has also been lacking this season, to say the least.

Clearly a player of good quality based on previous seasons, hopefully he can come into form again sooner rather than later.

Honourable mentions: Joe Rafferty (Preston North End), Thomas O’Connor (Gillingham, on loan from Southampton).

CENTRE BACKS

Richard Keogh – Huddersfield Town

Just a couple of years ago, it looked like Richard Keogh’s career might be over. A drink driving incident involving himself and two other Derby County team mates left the former captain injured and shameful. Eventually, this led to the termination of his contract.

However, in a surprise move last summer, Keogh decided to return to football after almost a year out of the game. He signed for League One side MK Dons on a free and since then he’s very much revitalised his career.

His impressive performances for The Dons caught the attention of Championship side Huddersfield Town who signed Keogh in January.

His commanding performances have continued at Championship level and he looks to be a shrewd signing for Huddersfield, despite his age.

Could we see a shock return to the Ireland fold, also?

Dara O’Shea – West Bromwich Albion

Although it’s not been a particularly good season for West Brom, it’s been an exceptional one for 22-year-old Dara O’Shea.

Just two years ago, he was plying his trade at League Two level while on loan at Exeter City.

Since then, he’s managed to gain promotion to the Premier League with West Brom, earn 4 senior international caps and become a Premier League regular this season.

O’Shea has impressed at times this season despite his side having the worst defensive record in the Premier League. His ability to play out from the back as well as his defensive awareness have helped contribute to a solid debut Premier League campaign.

Honourable mentions: Ciaran Clark (Newcastle United), Nathan Collins (Stoke City).

CENTRE MIDFIELDERS

Josh Cullen – RSC Anderlecht

After years of trying to break into the West Ham first team which seen him go on several loan spells and play sporadically in cup competitions for his parent club, Cullen finally made the move away from London last October. Cullen, in an unusual transfer for an Irish player, decided to move abroad to Belgium in order to ply his trade for the country’s most successful club, RSC Anderlecht.

So far, the move has been a major success story for the 24-year-old, gaining valuable first-team minutes and becoming a key player for the club.

You would think given his regular game time and solid performances that Stephen Kenny would find it hard to overlook Cullen as a starter for the upcoming World Cup qualification games.

Jason Knight – Derby County

It hasn’t been the best season for Wayne Rooney’s Derby County. Although their form has slightly improved since the Manchester United legend took over, they still hang dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Throughout their rough patch, Jason Knight has proved to be one of their best performers. The Irish midfielder’s desire, work rate and all-roundedness has endeared himself to the supporters and he’s become a real fan favourite.

He has played the most minutes of any Derby player despite just recently turning 20.

Tipped by many to have a big future, Knight could become one of Ireland’s most important players sooner rather than later.

Conor Hourihane – Swansea City (on loan from Aston Villa)

After a difficult start to the season which seen limited game time at Aston Villa, Hourihane decided to drop down a level and sign on loan for Swansea City in January.

So far, the move could hardly have gone any better.

The Corkman has played 12 Championship games since his move, contributing an impressive 5 goals and 1 assist in those games.

Swansea currently sit 3^rd in the Championship table and are just three points behind Watford who occupy an automatic promotion spot.

Could Hourihane inspire Swansea City to their first Premier League season since 2018?

RIGHT WINGER

Anthony Scully – Lincoln City

The former West Ham striker turned winger has been one of Lincoln’s most important players in a promotion chasing season which currently sees them occupy 3^rd position.

Scully has played 28 League One games this season, scoring a rather impressive 6 goals from out wide.

His father, Tony Scully, was also a professional footballer and managed to get capped up to u21 level for the Republic of Ireland, a feat which Anthony has also managed to achieve.

Promotion this season with Lincoln would surely put him in contention for a senior cap in the near future.

Honourable mentions: Daryl Horgan (Wycombe Wanderers), Robbie Brady (Burnley).

LEFT WINGER

Aiden McGeady – Sunderland

Perhaps Ireland’s most in-form player at the moment, Aiden McGeady has enjoyed an incredible season with Sunderland.

McGeady’s creativity has been one of the main reasons that Sunderland find themselves within the automatic promotion spots in League One.

He’s contributed an incredible 11 assists and 2 goals in just 18 league games for the Tyneside club. One particular game against Doncaster Rovers seen him assist all of his side’s goals in a 4-1 win.

He also provided the only assist of the game as Sunderland won the Football League Trophy against Tranmere Rovers on Sunday.

Honourable mentions: Callum O’Dowda (Bristol City), James McClean (Stoke City).

STRIKER

Joshua Kayode – Carlisle United (on loan from Rotherham United)

In a season where Irish strikers have largely failed to impress, Joshua – or JJ – Kayode has been an exception.

The former St. Francis FC man has managed 8 goal contributions in 27 League Two games this season for Carlisle, adding to the 3 goals he got for the club in 5 appearances last season.

His 6 goals this season means he’s one of the highest scoring u21 players in England’s top 4 tiers, just behind João Pedro and Keane Lewis-Potter.

He also made his full debut for Ireland u21s in November against Luxembourg where he managed to score an accurate header into the corner to add to an all-around impressive performance.

Kayode’s form this season could persuade Rotherham to give the 20-year-old a chance in their first-team next season, particularly with the club clinging to the bottom of the Championship table.

Wayne Rooney retired from professional football today after an illustrious playing career spanning nearly 20 years.

He played for 4 clubs during his playing career; Everton, Manchester United, D.C. United and Derby County.

He is most fondly remembered by fans of Manchester United and Everton.

Rooney started his career with Everton and made his debut at age 16 against Tottenham Hotspur. He would go on to make 108 league appearances over two spells at the club.

Rooney joined Manchester United from Everton in 2004 and would stay at the club for 13 years, solidifying himself as a club legend in the process.

He is Manchester United’s current top goalscorer having scored 253 goals in all competitions for the club. Arguably, his best goal came against Manchester City in 2011 as he acrobatically directed his shot towards the net.

Not to mention, he also attained several titles during his time in Manchester including; 5 Premier Leagues, The Champions League and The Europa League among others.

His decision to retire comes as a result of being named the new manager of Derby County, having coached – and played – at the club for a year.

The backroom staff has not seen many changes upon Rooney taking over, but some roles have been altered.

Shay Given, for example, has taken up the position of first-team coach after previously working as a first-team goalkeeping coach. Jason Pearcey has been promoted to first-team goalkeeping coach from academy goalkeeping coach as a replacement.

Justin Walker will also retain his position as first-team development coach.

Liam Rosenior has been appointed assistant manager having been part of Rooney’s coaching team – as well as Given and Walker – when he interim manager.

“My future is in management. I’ve had a great career with a few ups and a few downs, but I wouldn’t change anything. But now, I’d like to write some history in my managerial career.”

Wayne Rooney has already completed his first press conference as Derby County manager in which he was asked several burning questions.

“I know which players I want to keep here, and who I would like to bring in to this football club. I’m trying to build a team that I feel can challenge in this league. I’ve seen the reports on the younger players leaving. The ones who I want to keep, will stay”, Rooney commented.

This may suggest that Irish international Jason Knight is set to remain at the club, having been linked with a move away in recent weeks.

Rooney also released a statement upon being named manager: “When I first arrived back in the United Kingdom I was completely blown away by the potential of Derby County Football Club. The Stadium, Training Ground, the quality of the playing staff and the young players coming through and of course the fan base that has remained loyal and supportive.

“Despite other offers I knew instinctively Derby County was the place for me.

“To be given the opportunity to follow the likes of Brian Clough, Jim Smith, Frank Lampard and Phillip Cocu is such an honour and I can promise everyone involved in the club and all our fans, my staff and I will leave no stone unturned in achieving the potential I have witnessed over the last 12 months of this historic football club.”

His first game as permanent Derby County manager will be against Rotherham at 15:00 tomorrow afternoon.

Rotherham are just one place below Derby in the table (22^nd and 23^rd respectively) so the outcome of the match could have a damning effect on either club’s season.

Irish international Jason Knight has attracted the interest of several Premier League clubs, according to reports.

Knight is currently contracted to Championship club Derby whom he joined from Cabinteely in 2017.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been the shining light in Derby’s substandard Championship campaign this season. Despite his team sitting just 22^nd in the table, Knight has produced consistently good displays which have led to the reported interest.

The clubs in question are Burnley, Crystal Palace and West Ham. Burnley are thought to be particularly keen on the teenager.

The transfer window opened at the beginning of the month, meaning clubs have until the 31^st of January to secure a deal, if they so wish.

KNIGHT’S STORY SO FAR

As mentioned previously, Knight joined Derby County’s academy from Cabinteely in 2017. Cabinteely – as well as Derby – should be given plenty of credit for Knight’s development to this point. He joined Cabinteely at the age of 4 and stayed at the club until his move to England at the age of 16.

Knight progressed through the Derby County youth sides before making his first team debut on the 5^th of August 2019 at the age of 18.

Since then, Knight has established himself as a key member of the Derby squad, particularly this season.

Despite his age, the young midfielder has already amassed bags of experience at a high level. Knight has made over 50 Championship appearances for Derby, scoring an impressive 8 goals from midfield in the process.

He has also earned senior international honours last year. He earned his first senior international cap against Finland in October and went on to make two further appearances, including a start against Bulgaria in a scoreless draw.

Knight has represented Ireland through u17 up to senior level.

WOULD A PREMIER LEAGUE MOVE BE GOOD FOR KNIGHT?

Of course, the thought of Premier League football would entice any young player to make the move to the highest level. Expectation is often different from reality, though.

While Knight is clearly a very talented player capable of playing at the top level, there is no guarantee of regular game time when moving to a new club, particularly in the Premier League.

He’s currently one of the first names on the Derby team sheet and there is a guarantee of football at a high level, something which he may not get in the Premier League.

Knight is still only 19, meaning there is more than enough time to establish himself as a Premier League player in the coming years.

In our opinion, he should stay at Derby, at least until the end of the season. That way Knight can continue to play in virtually every possible game until the end of the season and assess his position in the squad come the summer time.

Jim Crawford’s first game as u21 manager is arguably the most important of the entire qualification campaign. A win —or even a draw— would leave the u21s in a great position to finish top of the group. Ireland have been incredibly impressive so far in their qualification efforts under the guidance of Stephen Kenny. They’ve won 5 of their 7 games in qualification which included an impressive draw against an Italian side with accomplished players such as Moise Kean, Manuel Locatelli and Sandro Tonali. 

However, this time around the fixture is being played under very different circumstances. Since the last fixture, Coronavirus has become a global pandemic, changing the way we consume and play the game. Players and spectators will have gotten used to playing under the changes made in accordance with health and safety regulations, but the virus still affects the game in other ways. In fact, the game between the two nations is in doubt due to Covid protocol. Three members of the Italy squad have contracted the virus and tested positive. Because of this, the Icelandic health authorities have called off Italy’s game against Iceland and the entire squad have been placed in quarantine. The status of the fixture is still up in the air with a decision likely to be made in the next few days. 

Nevertheless, the Irish squad will be fully focused on the game ahead in the hope of gaining 3 points. Jim Crawford will already be familiar with many of the players in the squad, having been coach of the Ireland u18s previously. He also held a training camp with the squad last month, so lack of preparation shouldn’t be a problem. The Italians will be no pushovers, though. Their squad is stacked with talent in every position, Serie A regulars Sandro Tonali, Alessandro Bastoni and Patrick Cutrone in particular could cause serious problems for the Irish at both ends of the pitch.

To make matters worse, many of Ireland’s key performers during the campaign won’t be available due to senior squad selection or separate reasons – namely Adam Idah, Jayson Molumby, Aaron Connolly and Troy Parrott. This is not to say the current u21 squad should be starstruck by the Italians, though. There are several bright young prospects included in the squad, many of which are getting regular minutes in the Premier League, Championship and League of Ireland. Many players can also count themselves unlucky not to make the squad which shows the quality of Irish players coming through, something which Irish fans have been starved of in recent years.

This u21 squad is certainly not lacking in terms of quality, leaving Jim Crawford with plenty of decisions to make when selecting his starting 11. Here’s a look at one possible line-up he could go for: 

GOALKEEPER

Gavin Bazunu

One of the two goalkeepers included in the squad, Bazunu came through at the Shamrock Rovers academy, playing 4 league games and appearing in Europa League qualifiers at the age of 16. The occasion clearly didn’t get to him as he performed admirably in each match, one of which included a penalty save against current Rotherham United man, Kieran Sadlier. Bazunu has appeared for Ireland at numerous age levels. He has battled with Caoimhin Kelleher for the no.1 spot during the u21 campaign, but with Kelleher’s call up to the senior team, Bazunu will look to establish himself as the undisputed first choice keeper. He has earned himself a loan move to League One side Rochdale this season and has already made some vital saves for the team. He recently made a stunning save against Ipswich in a performance that was lauded by Rochdale fans. Known for his reflexes and commanding presence, Bazunu will be looking to establish himself in the senior squad sooner rather than later.

RIGHT BACK

Lee O’Connor 

The two noticeable right backs in the squad are Lee O’Connor and Danny McNamara. While McNamara is a useful player, Lee O’Connor should be nailed on to start. Particularly after his pivotal role in the u21 campaign as well as having senior international experience. O’Connor spent 3 years at Manchester United before moving further up North to pursue a move to Celtic in search of first team football. That has not gone to plan for O’Connor so far, which seems to be a common theme for young Irish players at Celtic. He spent last season on loan at Partick Thistle in the Scottish Championship and currently finds himself on loan at League 2 side Tranmere Rovers. Perhaps not the career trajectory he would have wanted so far. Nonetheless, O’Connor is a very talented, modern full back. He’s exceptional at finding open spaces and whipping crosses into the box, he’s also competent defensively having spent a portion of his youth career at centre back. His versatility isn’t limited to defensive positions though, he also makes an effective holding and central midfielder and has played in the middle of the park numerous times at underage level. He’s been vital in the u21 qualification campaign so far, particularly against the Swedes where he scored an equalizer on the half volley to spur his team onto a 4-1 victory.

CENTRE BACKS

Dara O’Shea

A product of St Kevin’s Boys and West Brom, Dara O’Shea is another versatile defender, capable of playing all across the back 4. He has operated as a right back for West Brom since his breakthrough last season, but many would say he’s at his best at centre back. A position which he has regularly played in for Ireland. O’Shea has started 6 of the 7 games in the campaign so far and we would expect him to start on Tuesday as well, especially given his form for West Brom. He’s a technical, ball playing centre back who also has bags of aerial ability. In truth, he was unlucky to miss out on a senior call up given that he’s starting week in week out in the Premier League. He shouldn’t worry too much, though. Given his development over the past year, it’s likely he’ll be an integral member of the senior squad for years to come. 

Conor Masterson

Like O’Shea, Masterson has started 6 of the 7 qualification games. During that time, he’s established a formidable central defensive partnership with O’Shea, conceding just 2 goals in the 5 games they’ve started together. A product of the Liverpool academy, Masterson moved to QPR at the start of last season after being released. He impressed at times for QPR last season, notching up 12 league appearances and scoring a goal in the process. He’s of a similar mould as O’Shea, a ball playing centre back with aerial prowess. He displayed his aerial ability in the qualification campaign, scoring a precise header in a 3-1 win against Sweden. Masterson will want to kick on this season with QPR, having failed to make an appearance so far.

LEFT BACK

Thomas O’Connor

The starting left back spot will likely come down to two players; Thomas O’Connor and Darragh Leahy. Although Darragh Leahy has started more games throughout the campaign, Thomas O’Connor’s consistency at club level should get him over the line. The Kilkenny man is spending his second season with League One side Gillingham, after impressing on loan from Southampton last term. O’Connor is a technical full back with a wand of a left foot. He’s capable of creating problems from dead ball situations and from open play with whipped crosses into the box. One of the few accomplished set piece takers in the squad, he’ll be hoping he can create problems for the Italians with his delivery.

CENTRE MIDFIELDERS

Conor Coventry

Having started every game of the campaign so far, it would be harsh to leave Coventry out of the starting XI. Therefore, he should retain his starting place. Coventry is a bit of a throwback; he operates as a deep lying playmaker who isn’t afraid of doing the dirty work in midfield. He doesn’t have much senior experience under his belt, with just the one loan at Lincoln last season. Additionally, he’s made a handful of EFL cup appearances for West Ham’s senior team and u21s. He probably would have been hoping for a loan this season, but it doesn’t look likely at this stage. He’ll have to bide his time with the youth squads and hope his performances can attract lower league clubs. He done himself no harm in the way of attracting clubs by scoring a screamer against Colchester recently. Another solid display for the u21s would also be helpful in increasing his profile.

Jason Knight

The other central midfield position is a toss up between 3 players; Jason Knight, Will Smallbone and Danny Mandroiu. Knight has started the last 2 qualifiers and we would expect him to do the same on Tuesday. He had a magnificent breakthrough season last term and has continued his form into this season, scoring a goal against Preston and playing a key role in Derby’s last win against Norwich. An industrious, goal scoring midfielder, Jason Knight could be the box to box midfielder Ireland need to unsettle the Italians.

ATTACKING MIDFIELDER

Connor Ronan

The creative spark of the team, Connor Ronan has been one of the most impressive players throughout qualification. Ronan is a player in the mould of Wes Hoolahan, a creative midfielder capable of operating in tight spaces and drawing defenders out of position. 3 years on since he impressed against De Bruyne & co. in the Carabao Cup, things haven’t panned out the way Ronan would have wanted. Currently plying his trade on loan in the Swiss second division, many would argue that Ronan should be playing at a higher level. The Wolves man has had several loan spells over the past few years, failing to settle at any club. His last loan in England was a brief but impressive spell at Blackpool, where he scored one of the goals of the season against Bolton. A player of Ronan’s quality should be playing regularly at a higher level, let’s hope he can find his feet at a club whether it be in England or abroad. He will have to be at this best if Ireland are to get anything out of the Italians.

RIGHT WINGER

Zach Elbouzedi

Given the lack of options Ireland have on the right wing, it’s likely that Elbouzedi will be chosen despite his lack of playing time at Lincoln. Elbouzedi has been one of the surprise performers of the campaign so far, starting most of the games while impressing on both wings. His career has been a rollercoaster. Once on the books of West Brom, he was seen as a bright prospect but failed to break into the first team. He was released and picked up by Inverness Caledonian where he made few appearances and was again released after a year. His career seemed to be on a downward slope, that is until he signed for Waterford. At Waterford, Elbouzedi gradually established himself as one of the best wingers in the league which earned him a spot in the u21 team and a move back to England. Since moving back to England, his playing time has been limited. He’ll be hoping to have a good game against the Italians to capture the attention of his club manager. Elbouzedi is a quick, skilful winger who likes to sprint towards the byline before crossing. He’ll be hoping to use his pace to evade Italian defenders on the way to setting up his teammates. 

LEFT WINGER

Michael Obafemi

There are several more options for Jim Crawford to choose from on the left wing. It could be any one of Michael Obafemi, Will Ferry or Neil Farrugia that gets the nod. Realistically though, Michael Obafemi should start. His Premier League experience should prove a deciding factor in terms of selection. Although not a natural left winger, he has played a handful of matches for Ireland on the left. Obafemi is a man with a point to prove. He was left out of the last two Ireland senior squads, reacting angrily at one occasion which wouldn’t have pleased Stephen Kenny. Kenny doesn’t seem to rate him too highly regardless, Obafemi also struggled for minutes when he was u21 manager despite having more first team experience than most in the squad. Obafemi’s pace and directness should cause problems for Italy, we wouldn’t bet against him finding the net. He had a fairly good Premier League campaign last term, scoring against Manchester United and Chelsea. He’s struggled for playtime so far this season but should make a good impact player off the bench for Southampton.

STRIKER

Jonathan Afolabi

Big boots to fill, Jim Crawford must select a striker to replace arguably the brightest talent from Ireland U21 starting team, Troy Parrott. As it stands, there are three natural strikers for Crawford to choose from; Michael Obafemi, Jonathan Afolabi and JJ Kayode. Seen as Michael Obafemi has already been selected, we’ve gone with Jonathan Afolabi. Afolabi is a pressing forward with bags of pace. He possesses great work rate and determination and uses those traits to pressure opposition defenders into making errors. He was a name few Irish fans would have heard of prior to the 2019 u19 European Championship. Before the tournament, he turned down a new contract at Southampton in order to find first team football elsewhere. His performances at the tournament certainly would have attracted many suitors, as his goals and overall play earned him a place in the team of the tournament. In the end, after months of rumours circulating, he would choose to sign for Celtic. He’s currently in a similar situation as his Celtic and Ireland teammate, Lee O’Connor. Both joined Celtic with the hope of playing first-team football and both have failed to accumulate any minutes at the club. He’s on loan at Dundee F.C. this season after a brief loan at Dunfermline last season. He’s already shown his eye for goal in preseason against Peterhead with a thundering shot from outside the box. He’ll be hoping he can catch the eye of Celtic manager Neil Lennon against the Italians and for the remainder of the season.

This is just one of the many possible line-ups Jim Crawford could come up with. Whatever the XI chosen, the manager and fans alike will be hoping for a spirited and positive display come Tuesday evening.

Following Sunday’s meeting with Wales, Stephen Kenny announced he would be calling up additional players for Wednesday’s fixture. “I do, yeah I do… we’ll be addressing that in the next couple of hours” said the Ireland manager after being asked if he would have to make additional call ups. The players that received the call have now been revealed as Dara O’Shea, Jason Knight, Adam Idah, Ryan Manning, Ronan Curtis.

It is Jason Knight’s first call up to the senior squad. The Derby midfielder had previously been selected for the u21s. He will be hoping to get his first cap as well as Ryan Manning and Dara O’Shea, whose form last season will have caught the attention of Stephen Kenny.

Adam Idah had previously been included in the squad before being removed due to close contact with a member of staff who tested positive for covid-19. He has been recalled to the squad following clearance from the HSE. A much needed boost for Stephen Kenny.

The call ups come as a result of 10 players becoming unavailable for selection. The circumstances surrounding the absentees come as a consequence of injury and covid-19 precautions, following positive cases within the camp.

Despite a depleted match day squad, Kenny’s men came out of Dublin with a respectable draw against a Bale-less, but strong Welsh side. Kenny will be hoping he can notch up the first win of his managerial reign against Finland, something he failed to do in their previous encounter. The match takes place at 5 o’clock on Wednesday evening and will be played at the Bolt Arena in Helsinki. Unfortunately for viewers in Ireland, the match will not be shown free to air on Irish television. The match will however be shown live on Sky Sports.
