Carlow and Longford will provide the closing game for the Leinster Senior Football Championship preliminary round on Sunday at 4:30 pm.

The game will be held at O’Connor Park and coverage of the game will be on GAAGO.

The two teams have had contrasting seasons so far with Carlow impressing but ultimately falling short in the National Football League Division Four while Longford did the opposite in Division Three.

Carlow impressed in Division Four after their strong displays against Waterford and Wexford, against whom they looked a level above.

However, they looked a level below Division Three-bound Louth in their semi-final tie, missing out on promotion as a result.

Their attack looked sharp in all three games.

The quality of Jamie Clarke, Paul Broderick and Darragh Foley in the final third shone throughout the season and the trio will certainly give the Longford defence problems.

The O’Farrell County had a particularly hard time in their season opener against Derry, conceding 21 points.

Cavan registered more (22) but Longford put up a fight to soften the blow.

Longford looked a class below Derry but had close games with Cavan and Fermanagh, the latter being a draw.

The former fell away from them in the second half but their second-half performance against Tipperary in the relegation showcased their potential.

The Fermanagh game was almost a win for the Slashers but a late equaliser prevented that.

Padraic Davis’ men showed some grit in defence and blew Davy Power’s Munster Champions out of the water (and Division Three).

Rian Brady has starred for them in the final third and will look to continue his good form in the Leinster SFC.

Darren Gallagher’s goalscoring exploits have proved important while the ever-reliable Robbie Smyth has also been a feature in this capable Longford attack.

Considering what they did to Division Three defences this year, it is tough to look past Longford in this tie.

Longford progressed to the Leinster quarter-finals with a win over Louth last weekend. Now, they come up against Laois with the winner playing Westmeath or Dublin a week later.

It was a rude introduction to Winter Championship for Longford last Sunday. The conditions made handling and distribution challenging. As a result, neither team made any big moves in the opening half and Longford led by a single score at the interval with both teams finding the net.

The second half continued in the same way. It wasn’t until the closing ten minutes that Longford finally managed to open a gap. In that period they outscored Louth 0-3 to 0-1 and took a 2-point win.

Padraic Davis will be glad his team had a taste of tough winter football and came away unscathed. If the conditions are the same against Laois, the lessons they learned against Louth will stand to them.

Last year, Laois won at this stage of this competition and ended up coming close to being in the Super 8s. However, with no second chances this season they need to be flawless. A win here will likely set up a crack at Dublin which the players will surely relish.

In the League, a final day win against Fermanagh saw them retain their Division 2 status. Compared to Longford, they enter this game fresh after a week off from competitive action. In their last game, Laois found the net three times. If they can find such efficiency again, they will get through this game.

Laois are the favourites for this one. Paddy Power price them at 4/7. Meanwhile, Longford are 7/4 and a draw is 15/2.

GAAGo are showing the game live.

Prediction: Laois.

Louth and Longford were both successful at this stage of the competition in 2019. But, initial success was followed by defeats. For Louth, that was as good as it got as they were knocked out in the first qualifying round GAA fixture. Longford went just one round further before being dumped by Tyrone.

In January, these sides met in the first round of the League. On that occasion, Longford were three-point winners.

That set the trend for Louth in the League. However, most recently the beat Down on the final day to gather some much-needed confidence ahead of the Championship. Otherwise, Longford are without as much match practice. Furthermore, the one competitive game they have played since the restart ended in defeat to Derry.

Longford manager Padraic Davis hasn’t had the luxury of using a full club Championship to prime his players. Unfortunately, Longford’s club Championship suffered worse than most and many games were postponed. In fact, the Senior Football Championship has still not been completed. Hence, it is hard to know what to expect from Longford when they are in the heat of knock-out Championship.

Paddy Power still see Longford as 1/2 favourites to advance. Meanwhile, Louth are 2/1 underdogs and a draw is 15/2.

The match is live on GAA GO.

Prediction: Louth.

Derry vs Longford sees last year’s Division 4 winners attempt to put themselves in a promotion battle ahead of round 7. However, Longford have Cork in the final round so they know that this could be their best chance to leave themselves in the mix for a step up.

Allianz Football Division 3 round 6
Derry v Longford, Celtic Park, 4.30pm Preview and live score commentary

Only Down could beat Longford before the lockdown. A draw with Offaly is the only other blemish on their otherwise perfect record. Denis Connerton will not be complaining about the new suspension of club activity. The Longford Club Championship had already suffered setbacks and was only at the semi-final stage. As a result, the county manager would not have had some of his players available until a week before the game in Celtic Park. However, he will now have a full contingent to train with.

On the other hand, Derry started 2020 by kicking-on from the League performance in 2019. After winning Division 4, Derry proved to be more than able to compete in Division 3. Most recently, they were just two points shy of Cork in an exciting 3-13 to 3-11 game in March. Otherwise, convincing wins over Louth and Tipperary could only be overshadowed by a loss to Down. This came after an opening round draw to Leitrim.

In the Club scene, Slaughtneil returned to the summit. But, the Championship has been more competitive in recent years which will only be to manager Rory Gallagher’s benefit.

Derry have a tough Ulster Championship ahead of them. On November 1st, they host Armagh. If Derry can bring their League form to the Championship this year they may be able to compete in a tough province.

Meanwhile, Longford also start their Championship on November 1st. Division 3 rivals Louth are their opponents. Denis Connerton will be hoping to replicate their win against the Wee County in January.

Allianz National League: Derry vs Longford, Saturday October 17th, 4pm (Celtic Park).

For the first time since 2017, it’s Longford Slashers vs Wolfe Tones in the Longford Hurling Championship Final. Last year, Longford Slashers had a chance to win their first Championship since 2001. However, they came out second best against Clonguish Gaels. On the other hand, Wolfe Tones were absent from the final last year after previously winning six-in-a-row. Now, they have a chance to reclaim the title.

Both of 2020’s finalists defeated holders Clonguish in the group stage. Firstly, Wolfe Tones were 1-15 to 1-10 winners. Secondly, Longford Slashers exacted revenge for last year’s final defeat. They won by 1-11 to 0-6.

Longford Slashers knocked Wolfe Tones out of the Championship last year. This is something the latter will be aware of prior to this year’s showdown. Specifically, Slashers overturned a three-point deficit at half-time to secure a comeback victory. With this in mind, Tones will have some added motivation for the final.

When these sides met in the final in 2017, there was just a point between them in Wolfe Tones’ favour. Now, it will likely be just as close as Longford Slashers are ready to end their nineteen-year drought. However, this Wolfe Tones side are experienced finalists and when the game reaches boiling point, experience will be key.

Longford TV are showing the game live so fans won’t miss any of the excitement.

By the time the Longford Football Semi-finals throw-in next Tuesday, it will have been over two weeks since the most recent quarter-finals. Furthermore, it will be exactly a month since the other two quarter-finals.

After such a long interval, Longford Slashers and Mullinalaghta St. Columba’s will be dusting off cobwebs. Meanwhile, Killoe Young Emmets and Mostrim are slightly less refreshed.

Initially, due to be played on September 27th, the semi-finals ties were postponed due to two Covid-19 cases that could have affected the county’s GAA community. Now, the championship resumes.

A repeat of last year’s final remains possible as holders Killoe Young Emmets and runners-up Longford Slashers are on different sides of the round. As there was just a point between them in the showdown last year, Longford Slashers will be keen to return to the final and right that wrong.

Longford Slashers came out on top in Group 3. Next, they had two points to spare of Fr. Manning Gaels in the quarter-final. Mullinalaghta St. Columba’s will be their semi-final opposition. Previously, Mullinalaghta won three championships in succession (2016, ’17, and ’18). After an absence from the decider last year, they are ready to return.

Mullinalaghta topped Group 1 in spite of having a draw on their record. By defeating Colmcille in the quarter-final round, they earned a shot at Longford Slashers in the semi.

Longford Slashers and Mullinalaghta have been awaiting the semis since the 6th of September. With so much time to prepare, they will be raring to go when the ball is thrown in.

On the other side, Mostrim and Killoe Young Emmets meet for the second time this year. Before, Killoe were one-point victors in the group stage. Yet, Mostrim still qualified via points difference.

Subsequently, Mostrim justified their place in the knockout stages by defeating Abbeylare with seven-points to spare. Meanwhile, Killoe overcame St. Mary’s Granard by 1-13 to 1-8. Killoe Young Emmets will be aiming to replicate their previous win over Mostrim to reach the final. Contrastingly, Mostrim know they must perform at their best to qualify.

Quick Turnaround

The two semi-final winners will have just five days to recover. The final is scheduled for the following Sunday, October 11 at 2.15pm. This showdown will be broadcast live on TG4.

After such a long absence for Mullinalaghta and Longford Slashers, the return to Championship football will be welcome. However, the winners will have little time to prepare for the final.

Otherwise, Killoe Young Emmets or Mostrim are not as out of practice in terms of playing intense games. The quick turnaround will be more suited to the winner of this semi-final.

Longfort TV are broadcasting both semi-finals on Tuesday night.

Longford Football Semi-Finals:

Longford Slashers vs Mullinalaghta St. Columba’s, Tuesday 6th October, 8pm (Monaduff).

Killoe Young Emmets vs Mostrim, Tuesday 6th October, 8pm (Allen Park).
