It was a weekend of GAA shocks but Mickey Harte becoming the Louth Manager might be the biggest shock off all.

Harte was not given an extension to his Tyrone contract after 18 seasons, during which he led the county to three All-Ireland football titles.

Harte will be joined with his right-hand man Gavin Devlin, with whom he worked in Tyrone. They will also oversee the county’s U20 team.

Anthony Cunningham extends Roscommon contract

At an online meeting of Roscommon GAA County Board tonight it was agreed to reappoint Anthony Cunningham for an additional two-year term to the end of 2022 as the manager of the Roscommon Senior Football Team.

Anthony has already completed two years as the senior football manager and under his management, Roscommon won the Connacht Senior Football Championship in 2019 and won promotion to Division One in 2020.

In Leinster, it’s Louth vs Longford in the opening round. Recently, Louth were dropped from Division 3 after winning just once in the League. In contrast, Longford remained safely above the dropzone despite conceding their final game with Cork.

Louth and Longford were both successful at this stage of the competition in 2019. But, initial success was followed by defeats. For Louth, that was as good as it got as they were knocked out in the first qualifying round GAA fixture. Longford went just one round further before being dumped by Tyrone.

In January, these sides met in the first round of the League. On that occasion, Longford were three-point winners.

That set the trend for Louth in the League. However, most recently the beat Down on the final day to gather some much-needed confidence ahead of the Championship. Otherwise, Longford are without as much match practice. Furthermore, the one competitive game they have played since the restart ended in defeat to Derry.

Longford manager Padraic Davis hasn’t had the luxury of using a full club Championship to prime his players. Unfortunately, Longford’s club Championship suffered worse than most and many games were postponed. In fact, the Senior Football Championship has still not been completed. Hence, it is hard to know what to expect from Longford when they are in the heat of knock-out Championship.

Paddy Power still see Longford as 1/2 favourites to advance. Meanwhile, Louth are 2/1 underdogs and a draw is 15/2.

The match is live on GAA GO.

Prediction: Louth.

Leinster Senior Football Championship Round 1: Louth vs Longford, Sunday, November 1st, 13:30 (Mullingar).

Louth’s relegation to Division 4 was confirmed after round 6. At the other end of the table, Down got two points against Leitrim without even lining-out. The cancellation of that game left them second in the table and favourites to join Cork in Division 2. Louth vs Down is on Sunday at 2pm.

Louth started well against Cork. However, the rebels are a class above everyone in the division and once they found their stride Louth had no reply.

Yet, 0-16 is a promising tally to take them forward. They begin their Championship against Longford on November 1st. As a result, with nothing to gain from the Down game Wayne Kierans may experiment this weekend.

Whereas Paddy Tally has not seen his team in competitive action at all yet. He would have no doubt preferred to play against Leitrim.

Team News

Patrick Reilly and Emmet Coralan saw the line for Louth in the closing stages last weekend. Kierans will be expecting a more disciplined outing from his side this time out.

Meanwhile, Down have just the one game to get their team right before Championship. So, Tally will be keen his strongest possible combinations and will try as many things as he can in the 70 minutes.

Prediction: Down. They need to hit the ground running and with promotion on the line we expect them to do so. Louth are already bound for Division 4 and this will be more about pride for them.

Louth vs Down: Division 3, Sunday, October 25th, 2pm (Dundalk).

The National Football League resumes on October 17th and the Division 3 fixture of Cork vs Louth is one of the first to throw-in. Previously, Cork laid the foundations for promotion to Division 2. Now, their good form earlier in the year leaves them with room for error in the remaining two fixtures.

Cork v Louth, Pairc Ui Chaoimh, 4pm Preview and live score commentary

Team news

Cork (FL3 v Louth): Micheál Martin; Kevin Flahive, Maurice Shanley, Paul Ring; Kevin O’ Donovan, Mattie Taylor, Cian Kiely; Ian Maguire, Paul Walsh; Ruairi Deane, Killian O’ Hanlon, Kevin O’Driscoll; Damien Gore, Colm O’Callaghan, Paul Kerrigan.

Subs: Anthony Casey, Sam Ryan, Nathan Walsh, Donal O’Mahony, Tadhg Corkery, Sean Meehan, Aidan Browne, Niall Hartnett, Eoghan McSweeney, Jack McCarthy, Mark Collins.

Contrastingly, Louth seemed doomed to relegation. After five games they have no points to boast of. However, this could a blessing in disguise. With the pressure now off, the Wee County can use the League to prepare themselves for the Championship.

Louth follow up their game against Cork by playing another promotion hopeful in Down. Even a maximum return in these two games may not guarantee survival. However, Wayne Kierans will be more focused on the Leinster Championship game against Longford on November 1st. In January, Longford overcame Kierans’ team. Now, the manager will be ready to avenge that loss.

Meanwhile, Ronan McCarthy will have both eyes on the Championship fixture against Kerry on November 8th. McCarthy is one man who is perhaps relieved at the suspension of Club games. With the Cork Championship finals still to be played, he would have had a host of squad members joining the inter-county set-up at the last minute. More importantly, they were running the risk of injury. For example, Ian Maguire, Brian Hurley, and Michael Hurley all hobbled off in their semi-final. Add this to the already injured Liam O’Donovan and Tomás Clancy and McCarthy may not have had the ideal prep needed for the Kerry game.

After a disappointing season in 2019 which saw them relegated from Division 2 and lose all three Super 8 games, Cork are out to prove their worth.

The Louth football Final takes place on Sunday. Naomh Mairtin return to the fixture for the third year in a row. However, the last two visits resulted in a loss. Something they will be hoping to change this year. On the other hand, Ardee St. Mary’s are in the final for the first time since 2016.

The final comes just a week after the semi-final ties. Firstly, Ardee earned their place in the final with a three-point over Newtown Blues. Previously, Newtown Blues had won the last three championships in a row. As a result, Ardee will go into this final full of confidence.

Meanwhile, Naomh Mairtin continued their semi-final successes with a convincing win against St. Mochtas. It ended 4-16 to 2-16 in favour of last year’s runners-up. Surprisingly, Naomh Mairtin are yet to win a championship. This could be the year though as they enter this one as favourites.

Having scored 8-28 in their last two games, Naomh Mairtin are a force to be reckoned with. In spite of their big semi-final win, Ardee St. Mary’s are underdogs here. This may work in their favour as they can take the game to Naomh Mairtin.

Paddy Power are offering 8/11 for Naomh Mairtin to finally get over the line. Otherwise, a draw is 13/2 and Ardee are 6/4 underdogs.

LÚ TV’s streaming service is broadcasting the game.

Louth SFC Final: Naomh Mairtin vs Ardee St. Mary’s, Sunday 27th September (Darver), 4.30pm.
