Jim Gavin Confirms FRC Recommendations for Gaelic Football Adjustments

The Football Review Committee (FRC), led by chairman Jim Gavin, has submitted recommendations for adjustments to Gaelic football’s playing rules.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, the former Dublin manager confirmed that the FRC met for the 50th time on Monday night and has put forward proposals that will be reviewed by the GAA’s Central Council this Thursday.

No Specifics Yet on Rule Changes

While Gavin declined to outline the exact details of the recommendations, he explained that the FRC report would first go through the Standing Committee on Playing Rules before any changes are considered by the wider GAA hierarchy.

One key area still under review is the physical demands placed on players by the new rules. However, Gavin revealed that counties have yet to share data on the subject, which has prevented the committee from making a fully informed decision.

“What we have heard is that there are more physical demands on players, but we haven’t seen the data yet. We want teams to share that data with us,” Gavin said.

Call for Extra Substitutes Remains Under Consideration

Several inter-county managers, including Donegal’s Jim McGuinness and Dublin’s Dessie Farrell, have called for an additional substitute to help cope with the increased physical demands. However, Gavin stressed that no decision could be made without concrete data.

“That research is ongoing, and until we get the data – which will be anonymised – we can’t make any assessment of the physical demands.”

The recent rule changes have drawn heavy criticism from certain managers, but Gavin maintained that “in general, people like what they see.”

One of the strongest critiques came from Meath boss Robbie Brennan, who claimed that the current game “is not Gaelic football.” His comments were particularly striking given that Meath have won four games in a row and currently sit joint top of Division Two.

Gavin acknowledged the concerns but pointed out that inter-county managers make up just 2% of the Association, albeit as “very important stakeholders.”

The Central Council’s decision on Thursday will determine whether any of the FRC’s recommendations are implemented ahead of the All-Ireland series.

Meath’s Vikki Wall has been announced as the PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month in Football for September 2021.

The 2020 intermediate Player of the Year was influential in Meath’s monumental All-Ireland senior success earlier this month against five-in-a-row chasing Dublin.

Vikki was the player of the match for the Royals in the All-Ireland final in Croke Park on the 5th of September.

With her powerful frame, aerial prowess and strong runs, shrugging off many Dublin tackles with ease was the catalyst for much of Meath’s good play as her side defeated hotly favoured Dublin with a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-12 points.

This is the third month in a row where the women’s footballer of the month award has been won by a Meath footballer. With Wall winning it for the second month, retaining her crown from August, while forward Emma Duggan pick up the accolade in July.

Meath’s Vikki Wall has been announced as the PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month in Football for September 2021.

Wall’s Reaction to AFL Speculation

Vikki’s performance this season has attracted interest from many AFL teams, whose attributes would make her a valuable addition to any team, she has admitted she is happy with Meath for the time being.

“It’s something I wouldn’t rule out in the future but at the moment I’m happy, I’m going back to do my Masters in DCU, starting this week,” said the 23-year-old. “I’ll be here for this year and committing to Meath this year and really hoping to do well again next year.”

Meath’s ladies team did not have any players abroad in Australia for the past year and Wall admitted it may have led to their success in 2021.

“Yeah, I think you can look at it in that way,” she said. “I think for us as well, people might have had the thought of going travelling or doing J1s this year but obviously that wasn’t a possibility.

“So for us, county has really been our club this year. Last weekend was the first match I’ve played with my club since last October.

“I think that definitely helped us that we got to fully commit to county. We weren’t going to and from the club. I’d definitely be in favour of a split season.

“I think it really helps you to be able to focus on one thing at a time. I know it probably didn’t help Dunboyne, my own club, the fact that we had five on the Meath team, they probably didn’t have us for the league so that probably didn’t help them but, on the other side of it, it really did help the county this year with the fact that we got to fully commit to it.”

All-Ireland champions Dublin will go head to head with Leinster rivals Meath at Croke Park this coming Sunday at 4:30 pm as the second part of a doubleheader in the last of the  Leinster Senior Football Championship semi-finals.

The Dubs shared the title of the league champions with All-Ireland rivals, Kerry, during their league campaign.

Remaining undefeated in all three of the league games, they have not looked their best, but that is expected, even from Dublin.

With numerous retirements from past winners and a couple more on the horizon, this Dublin side is in a transition period from the glory-laden Jim Gavin era.

The Dubs looked less than impressive against Wexford in the quarter-final. Winning by a small margin of 8 points, impressive for Wexford to have kept the score down so low and to not concede a goal.

For Dublin, it will simply be put down to not leaving first gear.

They are still the team to beat and will go on to lift a historic seven-in-a-row later in August.

Meath is their great rivals from the past, not being crowned Leinster champions since 2010, and losing five finals since then, all to Dublin.

The Royal County had a decent league campaign, finishing second only behind a vibrant Mayo side, beating Down and Westmeath in the process.

Losing out on their promotion hopes up to Division 1 with a 3-point losing effort to fellow Leinster semi-finalists Kildare in June.

Beating Longford by a massive 22 point to reach the semi’s, Meath have been the form team this season so far.

They come into this game with a monkey on their back, questions of can they beat Dublin will be put to this squad until they do pull off an upset win.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Not much can be said about Dublin that has not been said already, boasting high-quality talent in all positions, they can beat you from anywhere.

The only weakness you could accuse the Dubs of is the reports of Stephen Cluxton’s future and how that will affect them.

Their opponents have a good team, but mentally how will they respond when Dublin get a goal and start to pull away from them.

If last year’s Leinster final was anything to go by, Meath will fall away and cave to the Dublin storm.

Conclusion

A repeat of last years All-Ireland final is on the cards, picking Meath to pull off a stunning upset is more of hope rather than reality.

If the Dubs come out and play like they usually do, then Meath will want the game to end as soon as possible.

However, I do believe that Meath will do much better than last year.

    Preview

This Gaelic football game will throw in at 19:30 on Thursday, 15th July in Pairc Tailteann in Meath.

Meath had a tough start to the year with their manager leaving due to a row over senior players in June. This will be their first competitive game of the year as the luck of the draw got them to the semifinals.

Corner forward David Bell has been knocking on the door for the senior team and this could be his chance to be seen.

Dublin overpowered Wicklow in the quarter-finals by only four points to make it this far. The reigning Leinster champions were given a fright, but their class shone through.

As free-taker Fionn Murray has a big part to play in this game, he managed six points with four from play in their last match.

Betting

Meath 15/8

Draw 15/2

Dublin 8/15

Score Prediction

With problems following them, it is hard to see Meath being fully ready for this match. Dublin has the games under their belt and that will make the difference in this game on Thursday.

Expect Dublin to leave as winners with at least a four-point lead.

Dublin returned to GAA HQ last weekend and their knowledge of the vast pitch was evident. They ruthlessly put Laois to the sword to continue their quest for a tenth Leinster Championship on the run. Meanwhile, Kildare vs Meath was a far more tightly contested semi-final. But, by the end Meath were comfortable winners after being six-points down at the beginning of the second-half.

Click for live score commentary

A few weeks ago, Dublin vs Meath saw the reigning champions claim a four-point win in the league. On that occasion, Dublin came out on top of a high-scoring encounter. However, Meath showed that they have the tools to hurt Dessie Farrell’s team. Direct runs from deep proved hard for Dublin to deal with and resulted in plenty of frees within scoring distance.

Last weekend, the same direct running style saved the Royals when they looked down against Kildare. Meath managed just four points in the first-half as opposed to Kildare’s eleven. As the sides took the field for the second part of the contest, things were looking desolate for Meath. But, they soon showed the hunger and drive that saw them compete with some of the best in Division 1 of the League.

Jordan Morris and Matthew Costello both found the net just minutes after the restart. The two goals were excellent examples of how hard running and moving the ball quickly can open up defences. That brought the deficit back to a point. Then, when Cillian O’Sullivan scored Meath’s third goal in the 45th minute after a turnover high up the pitch, Meath never looked back. Joey Wallace and Jason Scully added two more majors before full time. This came just a week after they netted seven against Wicklow.

On the other hand, it was just the two goals for Dublin as they swatted aside the challenge of Laois. The Dubs don’t need goals in the same way other teams do though as their 23 points would have likely been enough to win a game in itself.

In truth, Dublin were slow to get going as uncharacteristic errors peppered the first quarter. For example, Paddy Small hit a hat-trick of wides, James McCarthy was dispossessed twice, and Cluxton sent a kick-out over the sideline. Then, they found their rhythm and Sean Bugler’s 24th minute goal justified his continued selection at wing-forward.

Likewise, Ciarán Kilkenny continues to perform at the top of his game. A personal 1-4 tally looked effortless. Brian Fenton looked as dangerous as ever. He scored four points that could have easily included a goal. Furthermore, Cormac Costello stole the headlines despite only playing 25 minutes. Seven points from him is surely enough for Dessie Farrell to finally consider putting Costello in from the start. However, Costello could be his own worst enemy by proving himself as an impact sub over and over again.

Meath may have the tools to threaten Dublin but there’s little doubt they will need to continue their goal-scoring run to do so. 12 goals in 2 games is a promising trend to carry into such an encounter, but they need to be equally as tigerish in defence. Farrell won’t underestimate Andy McEntee’s team and his instructions will be for his players to come out firing. The first 20 minutes of this game will be played at breakneck speed. The other fifty will give us a demonstration of the gap between Dublin and the chasing Leinster pack.

The Royal County last won Leinster in 2010 after that controversial final against Louth. Since then, they have lost to Dublin in four finals.

The Leinster Final is live on RTÉ on Saturday.

Dublin are 1/20 with Paddy Power. Meath are 9/1 and a draw is 25/1.

Prediction: Dublin.

Meath and Kildare have had the luxury of avoiding Dublin in Leinster before a potential final. But, these two sides are well-matched and a place in the final will have to be earned. Last year, Meath made it to the Leinster decider where they lost to Dublin. Likewise, Kildare lost to Dublin in their last Leinster Final in 2017.

Live score commentary from Meath v Kildare

Last weekend, Kildare hit 0-20 to beat the challenge of Offaly. Despite their impressive scoreline, the Lilywhites were never comfortably ahead. A total of 14 wides is a very wasteful statistic and Jack O’Connor will be sure that his team rectify their efficiency in front of goal before this semi-final.

O’Connor put faith in his young guns and they rewarded him with a strong performance. Darragh Kirwan was dangerous in the forward line alongside Jimmy Hyland and the returning Daniel Flynn. In midfield, Aaron Masterson made an impressive debut by controlling the middle third.

Perhaps most impressively, Shea Ryan won his battle at full-back against Offaly’s danger man Niall McNamee. A clean sheet for Kildare is a great confidence booster, especially in the midst of knock-out Championship. But, Offaly had goal chances and O’Connor will know that Meath can threaten Mark Donnellan’s goal.

Kildare have all the tools to launch an attack on the Leinster Championship. But, they need to use them to full effect to reach their potential. The game against the royals could be exactly what they need as they will be punished for not performing.

Meath make their mark

Meath are here after beating Wicklow emphatically. On paper, the game was a mismatch and Meath proved it by turning the screw on their Division 4 opponents.

Despite being relegated from Division 1 after earning just one point on the final day, Meath were impressive against some top tier opposition. For example, they hit 0-19 against Dublin in the first game back after lockdown. Then, they showed some steel to steal a late draw with Monaghan.

As a result, Meath entered the Championship with optimism and Andy McEntee’s team proved their worth last Sunday. It was a successful Championship debut for Jordan Morris. The U-20 player scored 3-4 (two goals from the penalty spot) in an all-round impressive performance. In addition, McEntee avoided any injuries by running his bench in the final 20 minutes. Last year’s Leinster finalists never let up. To illustrate, they scored 4 goals in the final 15 minutes.

This prolific attitude in front of goal is exactly what could see them past Kildare.

Whatever team emerges victorious on Sunday will go into the Leinster final well prepared for what comes next.

This game is live on RTÉ News’ Channel.

Paddy Power expect Meath to win. They’re 8/11 as opposed to Kildare’s 11/8. A draw is far from unlikely and is priced at 15/2.

Prediction: Draw. This could be a high-scoring shootout in which a goal could prove to be a game winner. If it does go to extra time, Meath may just have that extra bit in the tank.

Wicklow enter this Leinster quarter-final with a game already under the belt. Last weekend they knocked out Wexford to get their Championship campaign underway. But, Meath will be a much tougher test. Despite being relegated from Division 1 with no wins, Meath performed impressively against many big teams.

Live score commentary stream for Wicklow v Meath

Wicklow proved too good for Wexford last weekend. Previously, they had beaten their southern rivals by three points to win promotion from Division 4. Last Sunday, they were even more convincing and won by four.

This time around, they had just 0-2 after 27 minutes versus Wexford’s 0-6. However, they won the rest of the game by 2-7 to 0-5.

Davy Burke kept faith in his League team and made just one change. James Sheeran replaced Eoin Darcy.

Niall Donnelly’s goal on 34 minutes was crucial for Wicklow as it kept them in touch just before the break. But, Wexford stretched the lead to three points again and it wasn’t until the 54th minute that Wicklow finally hit the front.

Then, in the 57th minute, Wicklow capitalised on Wexford being down to 13 men and Conor Byrne raised their second green flag. Desperation followed from Wexford but Wicklow tagged on a couple of insurance points in injury time.

The two goals will be something Davy Burke wants his team to try and replicate this Sunday. Meath are a strong team and it’s likely that Wicklow will need to find the net once if they are to advance.

Could Meath be a Dark Horse?

Since the restart, Meath lost to Dublin and drew with Monaghan in the League. The latter was their only point in the League but that doesn’t necessarily reflect their performances. In fact, they pushed Dublin for 70 minutes in the first game back and often looked very dangerous going forward. Likewise, they looked beat against Monaghan but never gave up and a late Jordan Morris point sealed a draw.

The Royal county were finalists in Leinster last year but scored just 0-4 against the Dubs. After the League game two weeks ago they will take heart in the improved scoreline. Andy McEntee will be itching for another shot at the holders but first they must see off Wicklow.

Paddy Power expect Meath to advance. They have last year’s Super 8 contenders at 1/12. Wicklow are 7/1 and a draw is 16/1.

The game is live on GAAGo.

Prediction: Meath.

Monaghan vs Meath is a chance for both of these teams to bounce back from defeats before the start of the Championship. Monaghan lost to Kerry last weekend, while a spirited Meath team fell to Dublin.

Click for live score commentary

The Farney men had a chance to distance themselves from relegation last weekend but failed to take it. They came up three points shy of Kerry after poor accuracy in front of the posts left them chasing the game.

Conor McManus was sprung from the bench for the second-half. Despite adding 0-5, Kerry kept tacking on scores at the other end.

He could feature from the start against Meath. As a result, he will draw Meath’s primary attention, allowing Monaghan’s other forwards to step up.

Meath offered a spirited showing against Dubin without ever really threatening them. Donal Keogan driving runs caused the Dubs some problems in defence. If he can repeat the trick against Monaghan it will create chances. Shane Walsh impressed in corner-forward with 0-4.

Despite their relegation being guaranteed some time ago, Meath’s performances are no reflection of their lack of points. They came within a score of Mayo, Kerry, and Galway before the lockdown. Similarly, they have reason to be hopeful after their showing against Dublin. The Monaghan game is a chance for Meath to prove they were competitive in the top Division. Expect the handbrake to be let off by Andy McEntee.

Team News

Conor McManus may see more than just a half on Sunday. Monaghan will need his precision in front of goal.

Christopher McGuinness also came off the bench against Kerry. Two points may be enough to earn him a start against Meath.

McManus came on for Conor McCarthy at the weekend. If McCarthy is allowed the chance, he will be keen to show his worth.

Meath have an extra week to prepare for their Championship opener on the 8th November. Thus, McEntee may continue to use his strongest players against Monaghan for some match fitness. Debutants Eoin Harkin and Cathal Hickey impressed at opposite ends of the pitch. They could be rewarded with another cap.

Prediction: Monaghan. Meath are no outsiders in this one. But, Monaghan have more on the line and will approach it as such. When it comes down to the wire, back Conor McManus to get them over the line and into Division 1 safety.

Meath (Monaghan): Marcus Brennan; Seamus Lavin, Conor McGill, David Toner; Cathal Hickey, Shane McEntee, Donal Keogan; Bryan Menton, Ronan Jones; Jason Scully, Bryan McMahon, Ronan Ryan; Cillian O’Sullivan, Shane Walsh, Thomas O’Reilly.

Subs: Andrew Colgan, Eoin Harkin, Gavin McCoy, Matthew Costello, Brian Conlon, Ethan Devine, Joey Wallace, Jordan Morris, James Conlon, Donal Lenihan, Darragh Campion.

Monaghan vs Meath: Division 1, Sunday, October 25th, 2pm (Clones).

The All-Ireland Champions return to inter-county action on October 17th. Dublin vs Meath will be the only all Leinster tie in Division 1 and is a chance for both teams to get some well-needed match practice before the Championship.

Dublin vs Meath Live Scores Commentary

Somewhat surprisingly, Dublin are in the middle of Division 1 thus far. However, they have only been beaten once. This was against Tyrone back in February. Two draws against Kerry and Monaghan have left Dessie Farrell’s team two points shy of top spot.

On the other hand, Meath look destined for relegation. So far, their five games have yielded zero points. In fact, they are probably one team who were grateful for the postponement of the League so they could regroup.

After coming up from Division 2 last year, the Royal County seem to be heading for the return journey. With Dublin and Monaghan as their remaining two League fixtures, manager Andy McEntee may decide the best option is to just focus on the coming Championship.

Meath face the winners of Wicklow and Wexford on the 8th of November in the Leinster quarter-final. Since McEntee’s side could potentially face Dublin in a Leinster final, he may opt against showing his strongest hand in the League. Instead, this could be an opportunity for new faces to earn a jersey. McEntee will have had a close eye on all the drama that occurred in the Club Championship and has plenty of options available to him.

In the same way, Farrell will likely be more concerned with the rapidly approaching Championship. After taking over from Jim Gavin, he is in the process of moulding his own team and the League is an opportunity for him to implement the changes. Farrell is well aware of the capabilities of Dublin’s major five-in-a-row contributors. Therefore, we may see the likes of Ballymun’s Paddy Small given a chance to break into the fifteen. Furthermore, youngsters such as Conor McHugh, Aaron Byrne and Sean Bugler are continuing to impress.

With the clock in the red last Sunday, it looked as if Gaeil Colmcille had done enough to win the Meath title when Brian Hanlon slotted home a penalty. However, Ratoath had other plans. Joey Wallace turned in a goalmouth scramble in the 69th minute to send the Keegan Cup back to Ratoath.

Thankfully, it was a free-flowing attacking game. After just 10 minutes, the holders were 0-5 to 0-2 ahead. Man of the match Wallace was immediately influential. For example, he was directly involved in four of those five early points.

But, the Kells-based team didn’t need much time to draw level. By the 14th minute it was 0-5 each. From there, Gaeil Colmcille kicked on. Hanlon was accurate with his free-taking and he rewarded his side with a 0-9 to 0-6 lead at half-time.

In the second-half, the game continued to ebb and flow. To illustrate, by the 50th minute Joey Wallace fisted it over the bar to put Ratoath ahead again. Gaeil Colmcille still had plenty left in the tank though. In addition, a red card for Ratoath’s Emmet Boyle in the 58th minute gave them a boost. Seamus Mattimoe was superb all day and it was him who drew the sides level at 0-13 a piece with the clock running down.

Then, when Bryan Hanlon scored a goal from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute it looked like the Meath title was returning to Kells for the first time since 1991.

But, a McMahon point left two in after 6 minutes of added time. After that, Ratoath bombed high balls inside and hoped to get a good bounce. Consequently, when Andrew Gerrard’s floater bounced in the box, Joey Wallace reacted quickest and flicked it past Justin Carry-Lynch.

As a result, Ratoath retained the Meath title in the most dramatic of fashions. It ended 1-14 to 1-13.

Ratoath: Shane Duffy; Ciaran O Fearraigh, Conor McGill, Ben Wyer; Andrew Gerrard, Gavin McGowan, Jack Gillespie; Ben McGowan, Cian O’Brien (0-01); Jack Flynn (0-01), Bryan McMahon (0-05, 0-03f), Conor Rooney; Joey Wallace (1-03), Cian Rogers, Daithi McGowan (0-04, 0-03f, 0-01 45).

Subs: Eamon Wallace for Rogers 38, Emmett Boyle for Gillespie 34, Connell Ahearne for Rooney 52, Keith McCabe for O’Brien 56, Darragh Kelly for B McGowan 63.

Gaeil Colmcille: Justin Carry-Lynch; Adam Muldoon, Paul Tormey, James Reilly (0-01); Jordan Muldoon, Sean Curran, Fionn Reilly; Liam Ferguson (0-01), Philip Ward; Conal Courtney (0-01), Keith Reilly, Evan Sheridan (0-01); Seamus Mattimoe (0-04, 0-03f), Brian Hanlon (1-05, 1-00 pen, 0-03f), Aaron Lynch.

Subs: Barry Smith for Ward 38, Barry Tormey for Curran 48, Keith Reilly for Courtney 59, Ryan Farnham for Hanlon 65, Cian Doogan for Barrett 66.
