The Cork Senior football panel and management team will be invloved in an initiative tomorrow, Saturday, 30th May, to raise funds for Pieta House, the suicide and self-harm crisis centre.

The Cork panel and management will run the required distance it takes to run through each of the 24 clubs involved in the senior football set-up in the county, with each individual set to run about 10 kilometres.

The Cork captain Ian Maguire from St Finbarr’s will begin the run, with players set to run the total of 432km between them over the course of the day, finishing back with the team manager Ronan McCarthy in Douglas.

Cork football captain Ian Maguire said of the fundraiser:

“It was inspiring and heart warming to see the nation wide support for Pieta in absence of their main fundraiser Darkness Into Light, but we the Cork footballers recognise that we can not rely on one event to fund such an essential service.”

The fundraising campaign has a Go Fund Me page called “Cork Club Together 4 Pieta” on social media channels such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Pat Duffy of Pieta House said the cancellation of the “Darkness into Light” event this year due to covid-19 has been a major financial loss for the organisation, as “last year (it) accounted for €6 million which represents 45% to 50% of our annual fundraising.”

All services in Pieta House are completely free and we depend on the community for our funding. Overall, our annual funding from the community accounts for in excess of 80%.

Donations can be made at gofundme.com/f/corkclubtogether4pieta

Pieta House offers a confidential, free of charge counselling service in 15 centres around the country, and can be contacted on 1800 247 257 or text Help to 51444.

Mullingar Shamrocks GAA club in Co Westmeath has raised a remarkable €10,500 for charities Heroes Aid and Pieta House.

The club raised the money through an initiative of reaching 500km, be it from walking, cycling, or running. Initially, the club was going to raise money for Do it For Dan but this fundraiser had already achieved the target set out. Therefore the club decided to raise the funds for Heroes Aid and Pieta House. Two excellent charities that do a lot for people. Heroes Aid looks after those on the frontline our nurses, doctors, and paramedics for example. Supporting them in any way possible.

Initially, the target was to clock up 500km, however, this was surpassed rather easily to 1500km. Club members, families, and supporters all got involved in the initiative and were very generous when it came to sponsoring. Westmeath footballer Kieran Gavin set up the event, while Ritchie Daly was heavily involved in the organisation aspect of things.

The funds were boosted further after Tye Adamson and offered to have their hair bleached provided the €7500 and €8000 barriers were exceeded.

It is great to see GAA clubs getting involved in such initiatives to raise funding for such worthy charities. Earlier last month Charlestown GAA raised over 6,500 for the same two charities. That story can be found here.

Charlestown GAA in Mayo have raised an incredible 6.500 euros for charities Heroes Aid and Pieta House.

The fundraising effort which is visible on the Charlestown GAA twitter page encouraged members, supporters, players and anyone in the locality to simply run 5km, donate 5 euros and nominate 5 other people to do the run. The charities involved will help those who are currently on the frontline, be it nurses and doctors. Heroes Aid will also use the money to purchase PPE for these healthcare workers to help protect them while carrying out their jobs. Psychological support, educational and practical support will also be able to provided for healthcare workers and their families from the funds raised. A total amount of 2.500 euros has since been donated to Heroes Aid from the Charlestown GAA fundraising event.

Pieta House have also benefited greatly. The charity helps those with mental health. There vision is to replace depression, self harm and suicide, with hope, self care and acceptance. With the ever so popular Darkness Into Light run looking extremely unlikely to go ahead they now need public support as much as ever. So every 5 euro that is donated is helping someone out there.
