Liverpool youngster Tyler Morton has spoken of his joy at making his full debut for the club against Preston North End in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Morton played all 90 minutes of the match, the only midfielder to do so, and further impressed after his 45-minute debut against Norwich City in the previous round.

His passing and vision were on display once again as he opened up the chance for Takumi Minamino’s opener.

“It’s very emotional,” Morton told Liverpoolfc.com post-match.

“My whole family are here and people who have supported Liverpool for years like my mates, they were here watching me and it gets emotional.

“Clapping the fans at the end, it’s just a boyhood dream and one I’ve dreamed of since I was born really because I’ve been coming to the games since I was three or four. I can’t really express the feeling.”

Morton made his debut for the senior team against Norwich last month alongside underage teammates Conor Bradley and Kaide Gordon and played alongside Harvey Blair tonight.

The Wirral-born midfielder has made 13 appearances for the Liverpool underage sides this season and has impressed in the UEFA Youth League under Marc Bridge-Wilkinson.

He had previously been on an exceptionally talented underage club side Greenleas JFC before he joined the academy.

Morton relishes the step-up to the senior level: “Yeah because I’m not used to first-team football and I’ve just come into it.

Hopefully, I can get more chances to prove myself. At the start of the game, it’s not like U23s or U18s football [because] you can’t really hear yourself think.

“The fans are loud and it’s a tough test but that’s what I like, a tough test.”

He noted that he is focused on taking his budding career game-by-game rather than dreaming of a Carabao Cup quarter-final appearance.

“I just take every game in my stride really, whatever game it is, and see how it goes. If I am in his plans or if I’m not I am always going to be happy to be part of the club and that’s what I’m like.”

Preston North End will welcome Liverpool to Deepdale for the first time in 12 years on Wednesday evening when the two teams meet in the fourth round of this season’s Carabao Cup.

Liverpool are expected to play a rotated squad in the fixture, as they had done in January 2009 under Rafa Benitez.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are currently one point off the top of the English football pyramid while Preston sit 19th in the EFL Championship.

Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Ljinders has revealed that Caoimhin Kelleher is likely to miss the side’s upcoming game.

The Irish goalkeeper had trained with the squad after missing the 5-0 win over Manchester United due to illness but it appears that he has suffered a setback.

Kelleher has made two appearances for the Reds so far this season, including playing the full 90 minutes against Norwich in the third round of the league cup.

James Milner is ruled out until the November international break after sustaining a hamstring issue at Old Trafford last weekend, while Naby Keita is recovering from the injury that forced him off in the same game.

Fabinho (knee) is targeting a return for the next match, at home to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, and Thiago Alcantara (calf) is not yet ready to come back.

Kaide Gordon may not be in contention this time as the Academy forward only returned to team training on Monday.

Sepp van den Berg, who is enjoying his second spell on loan at Preston, will be allowed to play against his parent club after the Reds granted permission for the defender to feature.

However, they are set to be without Josh Murphy, Izzy Brown, Ched Evans and Connor Wickham.

They are, however, boosted by the return of Matthew Olosunde and Ali McCann following a spell on the sidelines.

Liverpool assistant manager has revealed that Caoimhin Kelleher is likely to miss the side’s upcoming Carabao Cup fourth-round tie with Preston North End on Wednesday night.

The Irish goalkeeper had trained with the squad after missing the 5-0 win over Manchester United due to illness but it appears that he has suffered a setback.

Kelleher has made two appearances for the Reds so far this season, including playing the full 90 minutes against Norwich in the third round of the league cup.

On the availability of Kelleher, who was absent against United due to illness, Lijnders said to liverpoolfc.com: “Not sure, he trained with the team but it seems he had a little setback so he probably will not be involved.”

James Milner and Naby Keita were both forced off with injuries during Sunday’s 5-0 win at Manchester United after being picked in the starting XI.

Fabinho missed the game at Old Trafford because of a knee issue while Thiago Alcantara is nearing the completion of his rehabilitation from a calf complaint.

Liverpool assistant manager Lijnders said: “Millie felt something, he felt something wasn’t right in his hamstring, a little bit tight.

“Then [Mason] Greenwood made this run and he decides, ‘I need to catch him’ – how Millie is, putting the team always first. And that created a bigger injury in that moment, that run.

“It shows a lot about his character and his willpower to put the team first. This [injury] will be until the international break for sure, so it’s a long one. But we will need him in the coming period.

“My job title is assistant manager but I think you can give that job title to Millie as well. He connects the staff and the players in how he assists our manager. So, he has a role to play and he knows this, so all good. He needs to stay vocal, let me say it like this.

“Naby has a bruise in this moment, we assess it day by day. It’s looking good, so that’s good.

“Fabinho will not be ready for tomorrow’s game, we will assess him day by day still. He can make the game on Saturday hopefully.

“Then we have Thiago as well, who is closer to team training than ever. He will be later in the week with the team training. Probably Brighton comes too early but it’s good that he is back, especially in the situation we are in.”

Liverpool have been drawn to face Preston North End in the fourth round of the 2021/22 Carabao Cup at Deepdale.

It is only the fifth time in the last 18 domestic cup ties that Liverpool have been drawn against a side outside of the Premier League.

The tie will be the first meeting between the sides in 12 years, which was also held at Deepdale, and only the second in 59 years – Albert Riera and Fernando Torres gave Liverpool a 2-0 win in the third round of the FA Cup.

Furthermore, this will be the first time Liverpool and Preston will meet each other in the league cup.

Liverpool began their current Carabao Cup campaign on Tuesday night with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Preston will play their fourth game of the competition this season against Liverpool after high-scoring wins against Mansfield Town, Morecambe and Cheltenham Town.

Preston and Liverpool have connections – Liverpool signed centre-half Ben Davies from the side in January while Sepp Van Den Berg is currently on loan at the Lilywhites.

Liverpool will be expected to use the clash as an excuse to rest key players and give fringe players game time.

The Redmen’s young guns caught the eye against the Canaries as the trio of Conor Bradley, Kaide Gordon and Tyler Morton seamlessly slotted into the system that Liverpool use on their debuts.

Northern Irish right-back Conor Bradley was adept at making use of the right half-space in between the midfield and the right flank.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is known for making use of this area of the pitch when providing support in attack.

Bradley’s time in the Liverpool academy and with the Northern Irish senior side showcases his ability to join the midfield and help sustain pressure on the opposition.

However, the Tyrone native gave away a penalty towards the end of the first half but Kelleher, who hails from the same island, made sure the debutant’s mistake was not costly.

Kaide Gordon, born in 2004, made his anticipated debut at Carrow Road on the right wing and linked up well with Bradley.

Gordon worked hard and did well on the wing to force his way into spaces and create goalscoring opportunities.

He was the only member of the front three that did not get himself a goal but it was not for lack of trying on the night the former Derby County player became Liverpool’s fifth youngest-ever player at 16 years and 351 days.

Liverpool leaked counter-attacks in the first half as the midfield that looked like it lacked a defensive presence on paper lacked a defensive presence.

Step up Tyler Morton for his first 45 minutes under Jurgen Klopp – Naby Keita went the other way after picking up what appeared to be a minor muscle injury.

Morton was given lots of time and space on the ball by the hosts and did well with it as he became the assured presence that calmed the eight-time league cup winners’ midfield.

The U23 star made 31 passes while only taking 39 touches and also helped in defence, filling in for those who had left a space in the back four.

Fourth round fixtures are scheduled to be played in the week commencing October 25 and fixture details will be announced soon.

The 18-year-old was awarded man of the match for his efforts.

Irish 18-year-old Andrew Omobamidele was handed his full Norwich City first-team debut this afternoon in 1-1 draw against Preston North End. His performance, by all accounts, was highly impressive as he went on to win man of the match.

His most vital contribution of the match was a heroic double-block in the opening minutes which kept the scoreline at 0-0. Emi Buendia scored the opener for Norwich just minutes later.

Unfortunately, he was unable to keep a clean sheet on his debut. Brad Potts equalised for Preston with what was virtually the last kick of the game in the 95th minute.

Omobamidele’s performance has been lauded by a number of Norwich City supporters and sections of the media.

The young centre-back also put in an imposing performances for Ireland’s u21s in a 2-1 win against Wales last week partnered with Arsenal – on loan at Ipswich Town – 20-year-old Mark McGuinness.

He was given his Norwich debut on 16 January 2021, coming on as a sub against Cardiff City. However, tonight marked his first start for the club.

Omobamidele only signed for Norwich City in 2019. Previously, he spent several years in the Leixlip United set up, so much credit must be given to them for his development as a footballer.
